Just came back from this place and due to the timing, it mostly rained. However, it depends on one's outlook. I was on holidays, and I relished every moment that I was away from home. I didn't bring no electronic devices because I wanted to be off the grid. My timing was pretty good in which there were no children about until my 2nd last night and the neighbours were not partyers until the ones moved in on the same night.
Nevertheless, there were some flaws.
Firstly, SUNWING LIED in their advertising of this place by citing it was a 5 Star resort. It is actually a 4 star and the stars are located right under their name at the front door and also right near the name next to the front desk. The pictures make it look better than what you see when you get there. There was water damage throughout the building, but watch where you sit or stand or step.
Second, ALWAYS ASK what the voltage is being used in the resort. They were running on 220 volts. Luckily my wife and myself did not bring electronic devices, else we were hooped.
Third, CHECK WHERE YOU SIT OR STA OR STAY OR STAND. Our first room sucked in my wife's eyes due to her being a nurse. She cited the bathroom being dirty, so we got a new room. The new room smelled like bleach which was to my wife's approval, but it slowly ebbed to not being to her standards of cleanliness due to the cleaniness standards of my wife.
When it rains, the floor gets wet and slippery as well as stairs. Sometimes the elevator may not work, so it is safer to use the steps, but be careful where you step.
Nature works in a circle with Death feeding Life, and Life feeding Death. My wife commented on the thin cats walking around the resort, and my first comment was that it was a good thing because that means that there must not be any rats about. Of course there are birds and insects and fish about as well. However one must be careful when stays at the buffet. You don't know whether your food was touched by an insect or bird that were flying about. It cannot be helped, but it is good to have someone watch your food as you step away from the table. Since my wife was with me, we took turns keeping an eye on things, however when you pick your food, well, I just took my chances and kept enjoying the fact that I was away from home.
Fourth, it's not their fault, but the traveller be aware that the bank is open till 430pm or so, and you CANNOT get the front desk to exchange foreign currency until the clock is past 2100 hours. You also have to pay for Internet usage.
Fifth, it's not their fault as well, but the CUC rate really sucks because you would have had a better deal being in Mexico and using their pesos.
Ok enough of the negative rants. This is what I found positive of the place.
First, STAFF ARE FRIENDLY. They made us feel welcome and did their best they could do to make our stay relaxing and memorable. One does not have to tip, but these people are doing a service for us travellers, and sometimes these small gestures can really go far.
Second, ROMANTICO (one of the three a la carte restaurants) was a nice and cozy experience. I loved the food there and would love to eat there again. Due to the weather, Cunuco was not where it was regularly held. The lobster was awesome! The Italian was nice, but overall, I found Romantico to be the place to eat.
Third, my wife and I loved the firm pillows. We have never found a hotel nor resort that had pillows that were these firm. We found them to be enjoyable to sleep on.
Fourth, the beach was awesome as well as the pool! One can just stay there and drift away from the tension of home. Lots of activities and liquor to keep one occupied throughout their stay.
Overall, one must check ahead and ensure that their stay is to be enjoyed to the fullest. Small things as electronic devices needs power, but not everyone draws on a current of 220 volts. The staff are friendly, but the traveller should realize that these people work hard to make our time enjoyable at the resort and be appreciated since their Standard of Living is different from the traveller; therefore what we may perceive as standard for us, is not standard for them. We are a guest to their country so we follow their rules. Nevertheless, when you are on vacation, enjoy the vacation and not bring the worries of home with you.
