I was looking for a dive package in Dominica. I found 4 hotels in the Roseau area. Based on the reviews in Trip Advisor,I booked with Evergreen. During my 1 week stay, I visited the other 3 hotels. I found that the Fort Young hotel had the best property, rooms and amenities, but it was about a mile away from the dive shops and dock in the Castle Comfort area. I would stay there if I wanted to be pampered or catered to.
I found the Castle Comfort and Anchorage hotels which are next door to the Evergreen to have the atmosphere I was looking for. Both cater to divers with a shop on their premises and a dock for their boats right out front.
The Evergreen, however, had the nicest property and rooms. They also had the best restaurant. Right on the water, it had one of the best views of the bay. The only better view was from my room on the third floor. Three large windows on three walls gave me the best veiw of the bay - better than the view from Fort Young.
The food at the hotel was surprisingly good. Breakfast included American bacon and eggs or omelet with fresh local tropical fruits and juices. Dinner varied. Their fresh local catch was excellent with rice prepared local style. They were not shy in making their rum punch strong and flavorful.
I read other reviews critical of service on Dominica. Yes. Service is slow by American standards. Just leave your attitude and stress at home and chill down to island time. I found the staff and service slow, but they did provide service and were genuinely friendly. I found the staff to be quiet and reserved, but did respond with humor.
The only downside. The hotel lacked the diver atmosphere I was looking for.
The bottom line- if you want to hang out with divers, book at the Anchorage or Castle Comfort next door. If you want to stay at a slighty better property, with better rooms and better restaurant, book at the Evergreen.
