“Beware of Older Rooms!”

The hotel is in an ideal location for business travelers, but I would not suggest this hotel to friends or family because of the older rooms and rude and dismissive service I received from the staff and management.

I stayed at this hotel with my family in late December 2007. The rooms were scary! The oceanview room was old and was similar to a motel room. The bathroom had a significant amount of mold and only a shower - no tub (not that I would have used a tub filled with all that mold anyway).

The second oceanview room that we reserved was to be for 3 people, but we did not receive the 2 queen size beds we were promised. Instead, we got two pretty small double beds.

When I went to the front desk to ask how the old, moldy and scary oceanview room could qualify as the upgraded oceanview room I was promised (I had booked online, but had also spoken to the Ft. Young rep over the phone about the rooms), I was treated pretty poorly by the front desk folks.

I was told that the newer renovated rooms were more expensive (we paid approx. $200 US a night , per room) and that if we wanted an upgrade to a room without an extremely moldy bathroom we would be required to pay an extra hunderd dollars per night.

We were eventually moved to a renovated room where the bathroom had no door and the tub was covered by two curtains - absolutely no privacy.

I wrote a letter to the hotel management upon returning from my trip (about this and other issues I encountered at their hotel) and never received any kind of response form them.

I would steer clear.....

“Do not spend your money here.”

This is touted as the best hotel in Dominica. While the oceanfront rooms were spacious and had a balcony with a wonderful view, the service was terrible and, often, extremely rude. It takes at least 2-3 calls to get a request filled. They never had enough towels. Usually, we only got 2 bath towels, no bath mats, and no hand towels. Once, when we went to the front desk because our telephone requests had no response, we were given towels but, when we asked for towels for our friends in another room, we were asked, "Why are you vexed? You have towels", (the implication that we shouldn't care about our friends). This is just one example. I could give many more but the review would be too long.
Despite the fact that we did not arrive at the hotel until six in the evening, our room was not ready. During our stay, we had a problem with the TV which was not addressed.
The breakfasts were good and the private company which handled the tours was excellent.

“Upscale Contemorary Hotel in a 3rd World Country”

Fort Young Hotel

We stayed 6 days at the Fort Young Hotel. Our room was on the 1st floor, an ocean view deluxe suite. When the cruise ship docked right in front, we still had views of the ocean. We paid $140/night base + VAT and other taxes.

The room was very spacious. The bathroom had tub/shower, large sink and separate large vanity and the toilet was in it's own water closet. They provided shampoo, conditioner, body lotion, soaps etc. There is an programmable safe in the spacious closet. Our room had 2 comfortable queen beds, a mini refrigerator, TV, cable internet hook up, sofa, lounge chair and plenty of lights for reading. The balcony had 2 plastic chairs.
There were 2 types of electrical outlets in the room, 240 and 110 so we didn't need to use a plug adapter.

We had a couple of things in our room that needed repair and the staff were very fast and responsive.

The dive operators were wonderful and their equipment and boat were excellent. They had snorkel, one tank and two tank dives. We dove Scott's head. The water was clear, coral nice, but no spectacular sea life. The price to snorkel Champagne was $31 per person, but the dive shop could book you a cab ride there and back for $40 (the hotel tour desk charged $50). We opted for the cab, sharing the cab with another couple on occasion.

Pool area was really pretty with the water fall, infinity edge and ocean view. I thought the water temperature was chilly.

The jacuzzi tubs, 3 or 4 of them, were located away from the pool area. They were dirty looking, maybe silty water? I tested two of them and they were cold. Later I read that only 1 was supposed to be hot, maybe it was the really dirty one that I didn't elect to put my hand in.

The Waterfront Restaurant had a nice view, highly priced "just okay" food and really bad service. We had one dinner and 2 breakfasts there. The famous BBQ buffet on the terrace wasn't at all great but the steel band sounded very nice.

The bar and lounge near the lobby on the 5th floor (otherwise street level) is where the ice machine is located. Ask for your room ice there. We tried having a drink there one evening, but no waiter came by for the longest time and we went to our room instead. There is good wireless internet access at this bar.

When the cruise ship is in port, it is best to avoid town. You will be constantly approached by pushy locals to book a tour or shop etc. When there is no cruise ship, Roseau is a nice town to walk and explore and eat out. We had the best meals and service at the local eateries, Pearls, Guiyave, La Maison, La Robe Creole, and farther away at Papillote. You can also get fresh fruits at the open air market by the KFC.

Local attractions are snorkeling at Champagne where the ocean vents bubbles and the Trafalgar falls where there are hot springs to relax in.

The Fort Young Hotel is the only 4/5 star hotel on the beautiful island of Dominica but unlike other hotels who don't have any competition they do make an effort !
The hotel is situated on the site of the old fort there (hence the name) and is very "colonial",in a fantastic setting with lovely views and lots of stone and wood everywhere, even natural waterfalls !.
I stayed in one of the old rooms for a one night stay and it was fine, comfortable, clean, big king size bed with decent bathroom, good air con and decent tv,i only had a snack in the bar there but the food and service was good,
All in all i had no complaints and if you visit Dominca and want to stay at a good hotel it really is the only place to go to .

“Wedding in a million at Fort Young”

Fort Young Hotel

We booked our wedding package in April and Ms Ruby Robinson who was the co ordinator was very professional and efficient. The hotel rooms that we stayed in were deluxe sea view which had breathtakingviews. For the past few years we have cruised with Princess Cruises and have seen views but these were magnificent and the sound of the sea beating against the rocks at night was so relaxing. I ordered room service once and was very pleased with the quality of the food as well as the delivery time. The breakfast was eat as much as you like with a good variety for all.

The wedding went like a dream and I managed to get a local photographer who delivered all our photos THE NEXT DAY! The views in the hotel were picturesque and I attach a few pictures for your information.

I would not think twice about recommending the hotel to friends and family. I was quite surprised that one of the reviews criticised the hotel but was not surprised that the person was from the US. Unfortunately a lot of Americans like America so much, that when they go on holiday they want everything the same as at home! The best thing to do, if this is the case, is to STAY AT HOME!

Enjoy each country that you visit and be open minded, take the positives away with you and keep smiling. I do!!
