The view from the Deluxe Oceanfront room was wonderful. Dominica is an island filled with spectacular, picturesque, natural scenery. It has numerous hiking trails and waterfalls. You must relax in one of the many natural warm water springs. If you are looking to get away from the overally saturated tourist traps of other islands, Dominica is the place to go.

As far as the hotel goes, I enjoyed my stay. My room was clean and spacious. The staff was friendly and referred to me by name. Everyone seemed interested in making my stay a good experience. The place was quiet and scenic. Some of the best views in Dominica can be found simply milling around the hotel pool and veranda.

You can plan tours directly from the hotel. Although, you could probably find cheaper rates off site. The food was delicious! I wanted to see more entertainment in the evenings. They had live music only on 2 of the 5 nights I stayed there. But, overall I had a great time and will return soon!

During my trip to Dominica I stayed with my wife at three different hotels, and this was by far the worst. The service was poor, and seemed very unfriendly. I don't blame them though because the guests seemed miserable as well. When I go on trips I enjoy getting away from "mass produced resorts", and this was my experiment with the other side of life. The room was OK. I had a deluxe oceanfront room after reading the reviews of how the other rooms are piss-poor, and I was not that impressed. The view of the ocean was nice, but that is true pretty much everywhere on the coast in Dominica. We ate at the hotel restaurant because my wife is pregnant, and was not up to stray too far. The food was adequate, and very over-priced. If you're going to Dominica find somewhere else to stay unless you prefer to feel like you never left America.

“More attention to the little things”

Fort Young Hotel

I was in Dominica for a morning meeting and satyed at the Fort Young for one night. I attempted to check in early about 11:00 am before my meeting but my room was not ready. While I waited I made the mistake of having the most expensive sandwhich I had ever eaten from the Balour Bar. US$8.00 plus service charge plus 15% tax!!!

When I finally got my room after the meeting, it turned out that the view from my Oceanview room (519) was actually a view of the roof of another block and the branches of some palms. So much for paying extra to get a view of the sea!

The room was basic but comfortable enough. The water pressure in the shower was low and the shower stall extremely small. I hate having to brush against the shower curtain when bathing- I just don't get that clean feeling. On afternoon, the rooms can be pretty hot as the sun blazes down on the west.

I tried to get lunch about 3:00 but the restaurants were closed and I ws advised that even off property, it was unlikely that I would get anything to eat until 7pm. A staff member recommended ordering a snack from the bar menu but after my sandwhich experience, decided to pass.

I had diner off property since I could not wait till the hotel's restaurants opened for diner at 7 but decided to have desert and wine in the hotel's waterfront restaurant since I wanted to expereince it. I was informed (quite rudely I might add) that they were quite busy that night and I should have my desrt and wine by the bar!!! I sweetly asked the maitre'd if they were full and I guess by my tone and sarcasm, she got my point and gave me a table. That quite turned me off.

I had the full breakfast the next morning which was EC$30 but came to almost $40. I was pretty good and almost good value for money.

My overall impression: it seemlingly is the best that Roseau has to offer but they need to fine tune certain things: the 'moments of truth' betwen guests and staff, buliding covered walkways to certain parts of the hotel (I had to wait in the washroom until the rain stopped), puting coffee makers in all rooms, covering the front entrance, I had to jump from my taxi and run in the rain.

I guess I would stay here again but the wow! factor was simply not there.

“Great experience at Fort Young”

Fort Young Hotel

We stayed in Dominica for 5 nights and were there primarily to look at property. The Fort Young Hotel was perfect, from the location to the amenities.

We flew into Canefield airport early and got to the hotel before 9 am. Of course our room wasn't ready but they did the best they could. We just left our luggage and came back later in the day. The front desk staff were polite and helpful.

Our room was an Oceanfront Room in the new part of the hotel, overlooking the water -- well worth it. The room was spacious and clean, with a very large bathroom and lovely bath. The view was unbeatable -- we could see all the way to Scotts Head, and had up-close views of the cruise ships coming in beside the hotel. The room was also very quiet, with no noise to disturb sleep at night.

The hotel itself is convenient to everything -- banks, drugstores, groceries, many restaurants. Try not to go to the bank machine when the cruise ship is in town!

Amenities -- small but well-equipped gym (make sure to turn the A/C on), internet throughout the property and also 2 computers to use in the business centre. There is wireless internet in some of the common areas like the bar. The older rooms may not be equipped.

There is a buffet breakfast and lunch every day. As vegetarians we often passed up the hot foods (a bit cheaper that way). The selection was varied and fresh. The bar serves nice food which we usually ate for dinner -- great pizza and soups. There is also a more formal restaurant for dinner.

The pool itself is a bit small but nice, again with a great view from the pool deck. It never seemed crowded, usually just a couple of people.

We did one day of diving from the hotel, run by Dive Dominica. The diving was good and prices fair. The dive shop has a small selection of equipment to purchase, and can rent anything.

We're looking forward to going back to this hotel in Feb of next year. We really enjoyed our stay and have no reservations about recommending it.

“Lovely hotel”

My boyfriend and I stayed for 8 nights at the Fort Young in a deluxe oceanfront room and had a lovely time. The hotel is in a beautiful position over looking the sea and is well placed for trips into the National Park and various excursions. I can't comment on the older style rooms (these did look much smaller than ours) but our room was great, all the mod cons and enormous bathroom - very comfortable. The food was nice too though a bit over-priced. We tended to eat out in Roseau most nights and can recommend the Chinese restaurant on George V st and also the Rasta cafe called Natural Livity Ital which served gorgeous vegetarian food (we're both veggies) at bargain prices in a lovely courtyard which was part of a ruin.

The staff were friendly enough, especially in the bar area - great cocktails!

Only downside was the activities desk which was very expensive and the staff there weren't very helpful. Big advantage of Dominica is the great bus system, we took the local bus everywhere (fares no more than about EC$10 to anywhere). We went to Trafalgar Falls, the Emerald Pool, Portsmouth and the Carib Terrirory very easily. You can get buses to all these places (except for Trafalgar) next to the old market which is about 10 min walk from the hotel. Trafalgar buses are near the botanical gardens. Really recommend them and are great fun, Bob Marley on the cd player the whole way!

Note of caution for ladies, I went out on my own in Roseau one evening and you do get a lot of un-wanted attention from the men, I came back to the hotel pretty quickly! it's fine if you're with a man but otherwise it's a bit dodgy on your own unfortunately.

Dominica is a stunningly beautiful country and thoroughly recommend everything about it. Not at all commercialised and really easy going. Fort Young is a great place to base yourself.
