We stayed one night in Feburary and this was enough. The basic room ran about $100 and you had to sleep in a loft reached only by a very steep stairs. The room wasn't as clean as it could be and was definitely overpriced. The nicest feature was the patio area where you could eat a meagre free breakfast that comes wity the room. My travel mates had to upgrade since one of them couldn't ascend the stairs, which reminded them more of a ship's ladder than a real staircase. Just down the street (Ave. Padre Billini) from Don Elvira's is a brand new boutique hotel, situated in an old building. The nine rooms go far considerably less than Dona Elvira's and are very comfortable. Next time we will definitely stay there, It's the Suite Colonial, [--]

We loved this hotel. It was located on a quiet street yet within walking distance of all the sites/restaurants/shops of the Colonial Zone, El Conde, and the Malecon (a bit of a longer walk) We stayed in the Antoinetta room (#10). Perfect for a couple. The room was very clean and everything worked great. I'll have to admit it was not the most comfortbale bed, but we didn't care! We always had a hot shower, better than at our house! Large windows opened up to the courtyard. You can see the top of the church, the mango tree, and the blue sky! The pool was clean and felt great after a long day of walking. Some afternoons you have the courtyard to yourself. Breakfast was good- toast, fruit, coffee, juice- ask for eggs or cereal. There is a "roof-top" deck with a few tables and chairs which is great if you are looking for a little extra peace and quiet. The staff was always available. We spoke limited Spanish whenever possible. When we had to revert to English, there was not a problem. Ask them to call a taxi for you if needed or directions regarding taking the bus, they are happy to help. They will do laundry for you. You pay what you think is reasonable. (The falaffel place is delicious and cheap! The attached bar, S Bar, is fun at night.)

“an oasis in a noisy city”

Hotel Dona Elvira

The Dona Elvira was a lovely jewel of a small inn in the Zona Colonial. Hilton, the manager was extremely nice and helpful, the included breakfast was lovely, the room , though plain , had soft sheets and good mattresses and more importantly was quiet. It is within walking distance to all historic sites, restaurants and souvenir type shopping. The only negative was difficulty getting a warm shower!

This B&B was a sancuary in the middle of the city under a mango tree. A very quaint lil place.

We stayed during Carnaval for 3 nights. The Antoinette Room was a good deal for us on Expedia. The location was great for us, near dining, trendy bars and colonial sights. Also was a quick walk to the Carnaval.
The staff was excellent and this was even better than I expected due to other reviews. I never swam in the pool but it was nice to soak your feet in after walking all day. There is a old quiet dog and cat on site too.

Tips: Yes, try to learn at least a lil Spanish! The staff was happy to correct us and help with some words.

Don't expect the world.. you are in a city that does have water issues. We actually took our showers in the evening for plenty of hot water then.

Cheap Eats: Try a Fafafel Sandwich from El Reys just on the corner near the hotel- a great lil bar at night too.

Chose this from Lonely Planet Author's choice, and stayed 2 or 3 nights.
Great location, nice and comfortable rooms, quiet and relaxing. We had a chat with the hosts which were very nice people. Also, the entire staff was friendly and helpful. We ate a lunch or dinner in the restaurant one night, but that was a disappointment. It was just ordinary, filling, but boring food. We arrived a few days after hurricane Noel passed through, so they were still cleaning up the pool and rooftop yacuzzi.
