We looked at trip advisor a lot when planning our wedding and came across sun village which had a lot of mixed reviews. we decided to go with it becuase it seem to be a quality resort at a reasonable price....we could not have been more right!
Food:
I loved being able to go to any a la carte restaurant and eat without reservations like other hotels. There were no restrictions on how many times you could visit. The variety of food was great. The decor and feeling at each restaurant was amazing. The Japanese restaurant gave you pillows for your feet and lemongrass warm towels to wash your hands. The Italian restaurant was beautiful in stone and made a very special birthday song for my nephew. The mexican was a blast on the beach! The head waiter at the Mexican was super fun! He would light your coffee on fire and do a little show!
Service:
I heard some people complain about the service and was shocked! My husband was sick one night and they made up a special plate of food for him after the buffet was closed. We wanted chocolate one night and they brought decedant chocolate to us. My sister felt snacky and they brought nachos. There was no official room service listed, all you did was ask people and they provided at any time of the day. We were personally driven all over the resorts on rainy days. the staff spoke great english and were so friendly. The man at the buffet remembered how I liked my eggs after two days of seeing him. I did not have to ask for over easy eggs; I would make eye contact and he would make me two!
Quality:
Some of the rooms were not renovated and a few of our guests had less quality rooms. They mentioned this at the front desk and they were immediately up graded. The rooms were very comfortable. We were upgraded to a Spa room which had a king sized bed and a flat screen tv. It also had a jucuzzzi tub. We had a safe in our room and a fridge that was stocked daily with water and beer. When we arrived we were given a fruit tray and a bottle of rum.
Wedding:
Our wedding package was more than a dream come true. We held it in the gazebo with the guitar trio. All the chairs were covered in white linen. The cake was bigger than I expected and was delicious! It was home made and very tasty! (better than most wedding cake in Canada!) Our ceremony was initmate and our reception the same. The dinner was served by waiters, full open bar with bartenders making all specialty drinks and a dj. My flowers were to die for! They were a mix of tropicals and lilies. The table centers were the same. The flowers were so beautiful and stayed in our room the whole week after the wedding. Included in our package was spa treatments and dinner on the beach. The dinner on the beach was the most romantic thing that has happened to us. It made a fairy tale wedding an ultimate fairy tale. We had a 4 course meal of steak and lobster under the stars and on the beach. We had our own private waiter and when we returned to our hotel room they had rose petals and candles lit in our room, a bubble bath drawn and very fine chocolates! Romantic!!!!
One note of caution about the weddings: If you are a control freek this is not the wedding for you. If you want to have a great time and a wedding that your truly enjoy without a lot of hassle then I would recommend this. The dominican people are very laid back. In planning the wedding I was a little worried that details were not being completed as I did not hear any confirmations. Confirming things months, weeks and days before the wedding is a canadian custom because you have to do that!!! In the DR you let them know what you are thinking and then a few days before the wedding the planner takes you around and confirms all the details.
Spa:
The spa is a must if you are wanting a true get away on vacation. Angel is the head guy and a dream with his hands. My husband and I had the couples facials on the morning of our wedding. The spa was an ultimate experience for the senses as it was beautiful, smelled peacful, sounded peacefull and felt peacefull. We ended up going back for massages the day after the wedding and really enjoyed it. When you book at the spa I would recommend booking in the morning so that you can take advantage of all it has to offer. It has jaccuzi tubs, steam rooms and a private lounge area, pool and other stuff.
Things that may be a problem:
People with disabilities may have a problem in this resort as there are a lot of stairs and paths. It is beautifully laid out and can take some time to know your way around. the staff with the golf carts are awesome and can assist you in getting around.
The beach is not like the beach in Punta Cana. If you want clear water and white sand do not come here. We did not have the best beach I have ever seen at this hotel. Just down the beach at the end the water is clear and you can use snorkle gear for free to see fish. It was fun and safe.
