We just arrived home after our 4th stay at Occidental Allegro Playa Dorada and we had another great vacation in our second home, as we say, back to our Island family. We have been going to Puerto Plata since 1993 and have always enjoyed. The Occidental Allegro Playa Dorada staff are the greatest. All of the people that work there, from the ladies that do the rooms, people in the buffet and restaurants, the bar tenders go out of their way to make sure things are ok. I would like to mention Friedrich Stieb, Guest Services, who always is there if anything is needed. He is the best, always so helpful, hope he is there for years to come. Also, Chef Mario, a great person and a great guy, Jose Cruz, always checking to make sure things are the way they should be. If we have a problem it is always attended to.Our family has already booked for 9 members to go back in Oct., 2008, and some of the family members are counting the days down alreday. A friend and I decided to have a relaxing vacation after a hard yerar of school. We decided to book at the Occidental Allegro Playa Dorada in Peurto Plata, because the rates were relatively inexpensive, and we knew that it would definately be a "party zone!" When we first arrived, our room was not acceptable (air conditioning was broken, shower was clogged, view was bad), but the next day our room was changed to something much better. Our room was great (in the 100 series-- request this if you can), the food was ok, and the Staff was extraordinary. Never have I been to a resort where the staff completely made my vacation. They try their best to accomodate everyone, and include everyone in the daily and nightly activities. The entertainment was quite humourous, and it was a great time to sit down after dinner and have some drinks.

I would definately return to the Allegro Playa Dorada because of the staff alone. All food at the all inclusive resorts in the DR is the same (I have been there 3 times/various levels of resorts), and if you are not happy with your room initially, they will switch you.

I recommend that you request a room on the ground floor, or that at least has a balcony.

This resort is ideal for those of you who like to party!! The plaza and disco's are only 5 minutes (safe walk) from the resort, and the party never stops throughout the day.

We returned from 2 weeks @ the Occidental Allegro Playa Dorada on the 16th of April 2008. The rooms are ok . No bar fridge - 2 super single beds (that's as big as they get !!) -bring kleenex if you prefer tissues to blow your nose or toilet paper's it !!!There are blowdryers- such as they are. BEWARE THE VACATION CLUB !! THEY'RE REALLY GOOD AT SHMOOZING!!! WE LOST $500 TO THEM BUT THANKFULLY WE GOT OUT BEFORE WE CAME HOME. IT'S A LONG STORY THAT TOOK 6 FULL DAYS OUT OF A 14 DAY VACATION - SO BEWARE - WHITE SHIRTS - CHARMING SMILES -SOB STORIES- GIFTS -THEY'LL OFFER YOU ANYTHING - WE WERE PLIED WITH 2 BOTTLES OF CHAMPAGNE AND WONDERFUL CONVERSATION AND BOSSES WHO SHMOOOOZZEE - 'TILL YOU SIGN ON THE DOTTED - - SO
Enjoy your vacation !! This resort is very family and activity oriented -lots of music & game fun all the time.
If you want bottled water be prepared to buy it. Or reuse the bottles that you buy & fill with water from the coolers in the hall --Cancer in a bottle I figure - - - -The food at the buffet is ok -tasty , repetitious sometimes -but ok - the a la cartes aren't much of it -we liked the Italian the best - - we won't be going back - according to Occidental it's a 3-3 1/2 star . We booked through a travel agent who told us the resort was a 4 star and it was nice. Well this was our honeymoon and we wanted nothing less than a 4 star of course. The travel agent put in requests for us to stay in the newer building and a king size bed and off course for the honeymoon upgrades listed on their website. Upon arrival the rooms were not ready until 3 at which point we just walked around tried the snack bar which the burgers were red on the inside yuk! Went back to the front desk to check in we showed her our marriage certificate which she looked at it and really didn't know what to do with it. I asked if we are getting the honeymoon up grade? The comment given was I guess I can see if we have an ocean view room available fine we said then proceeded to the room only to find that it was runned down and the ceiling fan hanging unsafe, we returned to the front to ask for a different room they showed us two others that were in worse condition and stunk.
Off course we ended up staying in the first one, we did not receive our honeymoon package at all, the a la cartes were terrible if it wasn't for the buffet we would have starved.
We were leaving Sunday to come home, well the saturday mid day we were unable to go swimming( approx 100 kids took over the pools) , attend the evening buffet and see the shows because they have what they call a Weekend Pass for the Locals to come in a use the facilities for 3 days for a small fee. They had about 300-400 locals staying at the resort the place was just packed no seating outside for the show or in the dining room. We went to our room by 8:30 and watched TV (if I wanted to watch tv I could have stayed home it would have been cheaper).
Needless to say the travellers were very unhappy that had to stay for a few more days, our bus ride to the airport had some very angry people.
WE will never go back to the playa dorada complex too much hasselling by the locals and the service was not 4 star it may have been a 2 1/2 if that.
