We just got back from this resort on Feb 19, 2008. We stayed one week and hated to go. This was our first all inclusive and despite all the dire warnings about sickness, we were absolutely fine. Our room was not ready at check-in time, but we only had to wait 15 minutes or so. We did not get an orientation to the hotel and/or the complex until we had been there for 24 hours. That was perhaps the only draw back, but not the fault of the hotel.
The food was excellent. There was a buffet, 2 a la carte restaurants and a beach pizza/burger bar. The food at all places was excellent with great choices and even better service. The staff at the restaurants were obviously well trained.
The room was large and airy, clean and in good shape. We had a safe, plenty of towels but a not so wonderful view. There is NO ocean view, but in the long run, we had a quiet part of the hotel, which turned out to be a blessing,
The grounds of the hotel were very well kept, cleaned and groomed on a daily basis with very amiable grounds staff. Maids and porters, front desk and bar tenders were all friendly and open. Always smiling, always a friendly OLA to everyone.
The pool was adequate though we never used it. The beach was a 2 minute walk along a nicely gardened pathway. The beach was simply wonderful. The Ibiza bar/buffet was always busy and the food plentyful. The biggest problem there was the ladies washrooms did NOT FLush, Gross. I complained to three different people, but nothing was done. Plenty of lounge chairs, plenty of beach, lots of sports and lots of fun.
The animation staff were a complete riot and were very good dancers. We enjoyed their shows and enjoyed their antics even more. It was nice to see people realy enjoying themselves at their jobs.
Took a couple of excursions, one through the hotel and one through the "pirates" at the beach, The pirate excursion to Coyo Paradiso was great fun and less than 1/2 the cost of the hotel's trip. The bus trip was about 2-1/2 hrs to the water, then boat to the island, snorkel and then return. The bus ride was certainly interesting. The stops were are prearranged and I will warn you, DO NOT BUY anything from these prearranged stops. We priced a pound of coffee at 600 peso's and bought it a local shop for 85, Huge difference. The locals are a little relentless about wanting to sell you stuff, just stand your ground and state your top price. They say $60.00, offer $15.00 and see where it goes. I walked away from a guy who started out at 80.00 and settled for 35.00.
The trip to Puerta Plata/Sosua was interesting and the guide was very knoweldgable and spoke pretty good English.
Check-out and shuttle to the airport was organized and no problems at all. No thefts occured and we heard zero complaints.
All in all I would rate this a 4 star resort. The only things holding it back are: no swim up bar, no coffee makers in the rooms, just a few more activities need to be availalbe and of course, it is not right on the beach. The rooms are not opulent, they are more than adequate, but better sheets, ceiling fans, coffee makers, satellite TV and dressors would be nice. We were only there to change and sleep so it was fine for us.
Lots for kids to do, great kids club and an energetic leader, close to the beach and different activities everytday with a stage dance every night for the parents to watch. Entertainment was good, better than good.
Go.....stay there, have fun. It was a wonderful first experience and I would go again, except we want to go to different places.
