I stayed at Suncamp for 5 weeks and had a great time! The people there were very nice, and it was an extremely relaxing time. The good thing about this place (despite what people might say), is that it is located just outside the main road, about 2-3km from the playa dorata entrance. It does take some time to get to the apartment because of the dirt road, however, the place is surrounded by very beautiful mountains, trees, and a nice river close by that you can swim in.
I really have no idea how a person could be so negative about Suncamp (Old name, Tropical House). It's like buying a green apple and saying that you hate it because it's green! It doesn't make sense! If you're looking to be spoiled, pampered, and drink all day, then go to an all-inclusive resort. BUT, if you want to experience the real Dominican culture and lifestyle, then Suncamp is a great starter place to be at. It's extremely affordable as well. What more do you want for $150 US a month?
Owner Diane Pellerin helped me very much during my stay, and was able to give me many pointers about the city and great (affordable) places to go for food, horseback riding, beaches, and in Puerto Plata. Of course you can stay in the loud stinky city and pay 6000 pesos (over $200 US) for a one room tiny apartment. But, if you enjoy nature and want to experience culture, and meet people, then Suncamp is a perfect place!
OH, and about this HAITIAN village.... BIG DEAL!!! So you have to pass a little area where Haitians live! I had no problems walking past and through this village many, many times. They are nice people and usually will say hello! They are HUMAN BEINGS for crying out loud!
Please feel free to email me if you have any specific questions about this place.
