When we first researched where to stay while in the DR, we found only large or all-inclusive hotels. We were thrilled to find Los Gringos instead. Patrick and Steve and their friendly helpful staff made our stay 100% relaxing-- it was a perfect vacation, from the laid-back but completely accommodating atmosphere to the serene, secluded beach and the excellently prepared delicious food.

When we were ready for a break from the beach we explored nearby Rio San Juan, the Laguna GriGri by boat, and faster-paced Sosua all with Patrick and Steve's help.

Patrick and Steve served as welcoming hosts who know the country well and were ready to share their beloved DR with us for the week. We couldn't have chosen better.

Excellent location.- Its set in a small town on the north coast, remote enough to be quiet and close enough to not be a pain to get to.
It takes a good hour from the puerto plata airport, or 4 hours from the santo domingo airport, or 2 hours from santiago.
The cabanas are set right on the beach and you have to walk about fifty steps to be in the water. The cabanas themselves are clean and well lit.
The beds are not firm , but if you are not as fat as me, that might not matter. Also, the sheets are pretty poly, so if that matters to you, bring some.
There are a couple great beaches a few minutes away, playa grande, and playa calotone.

Great food.
Patrick is the owner of Los Gringos and is a great cook and is very flexible. Breakfast is included and is very quick, filling, and can be about anything you want. Get the passion fruit juice.
Everything we ate was delicious.

It is paradise.

Please email me if you have a question.

Who hasn't dreamed of a remote thatched roof bungalow on a tropical beach? However, when I saw the website for Los Gringos and read the reviews on this site and others, I was leary to say the least that this place would live up to my expectations for a mere $150 for 3 nights. It was great....I only wish I could have stayed for a month.

The bungalows are either new or newly refurbished and are impecably clean with tiled bathrooms. My only suggestions for the next visit would be to throw a bar of your favorite soap and a roll of your favorite TP in the suitcase if you are the least bit fussy.

The view outside from your bed in the morning is just fabulous. This of course is the same view you will have from your front porch where Patrick or one of his girls will deliver you coffee in the morning. Then breakfast at the restaurant/bar. Eat at 8am or 3pm or anytime in between. That's what I call flexible!

I'm told that "somewhat regularly" on Sunday, Patrick has a BBQ with either a pig, lamb, or dorado (mahi-mahi). In our case the weather did not cooperate so we had to settle for another great meal in the restaurant/bar. Don't take the menu literally....Patrick will prepare whatever you want...however you want it and if you are not sure, Patrick will make suggestions.

As far as what to wear....shorts and swim suits during the day and due to the "no-see-um's", long pants with socks at night. (I forgot the socks and regret it).

This was one of the best vacation spots of my life. The cabanas were great, clean and confortable with plenty of room for company and hot showers, rare for the Dominican Republic. The manager Patrick is a world class chef and I had the best filet mignon I've ever had. They also cooked sheep on an open grill the Sunday we were there and the meal was absolutely fantastic. You have the beach all to yourself with Wendy waiting on you for your every need. We went into town in the evenings to play and Patrick provided a guide for us. The price was unbeatable and included a large breakfast prepared by Patrick every morning. I wish I could live there.

“This gem of a beach resort”

Los Gringos

I found this little gem of a beach resort through some friends who saw it being renovated. There are 3 wonderful new thatched cabanas, GriGri, Seagrape and Hummingbird, directly on a beautiful sweep of sand called Magante, where you can walk for miles.

Each cabana sleeps 4, with tiled, en-suite facilities and HOT showers. Room rates are very reasonable based on 2 sharing. Details on their website at www.losgringosdr.com .

You can lie in bed and look straight out to sea through the swaying palms. The beds are really really comfortable and as one end of the cabana is glass, the view is hard to beat. There is lots of shade on the beach and because of the double reef which protects the bay, safe swimming and snorkelling from the beach with some fabulous shells and driftwood to be found.

My friends and I had a fantastic relaxing week, pampered by Patrick who runs the place and his fabulous cooking. We hired a car for a few days to explore but were always glad to get back to the peace and quiet of our hideaway...
Of course if you want a bit of nightlife, there is Rio 10 minutes away, an all-inclusive hotel 5 minutes away and the wonderfully boistrous resort of Cabarete half an hour back towards the airport.

You have to drive carefully in Yagua on the main road to Rio and look out for the signs down to the beach and there it is - your little piece of heaven.

Local fishermen arrive during the day with freshly caught fish which Patrick will happily cook for you - can't get better than that!

I am going back next week and In August now that I have discovered Los GrinGos AND the really cheap flights from Cardiff airport. Don't worry if you haven't been on this sort of holiday before; Patrick is very happy to pick you up from Puerto Plata airport so it couldn't be easier. Trust me....you will feel very at home very quickly and if you can't relax here, you can't relax anywhere !
