“Overall Great but... a few things”
We got home yesterday after 6 days at Riu Bambu. It was Great, Good, and sometimes annoying. To the point...
Let's start with the good things. BEAUTIFUL beach !!!! Wonderfull white sand, no sea weed, not too crowded, there were always loungers available, shade could be found, NO jellyfish ! Our room was immaculately clean. The maids always had it done by 11 AM which was perfect timing for our needs. I truly don't understand the reviews saying how terrible the rooms were. Yes they are doing major construction to the RIU next door but we never heard anything when we were in the room. Sound doesn't travel well through concrete walls ! We were also in the row directly beside the construction. Check in/out were a breeze. We went through VIP and our rep was Ivan. He did a great job of explaining the tours. We only went on one. It was the Adventure Boogie group. This is the one is where we were trucked to a site, drove dune buggies to another beautiful beach, drove the buggies to a spring water filled cave and swam, (cold but refreshing !) then drove back to the site. It was a BLAST. We have 2 kids 9 and 11. They loved it. The entertainment staff really outdid themselves. They were great with the kids and when you said no thanks to an invite to join beach volleyball or whatever the activity was, they just moved on instead of badgering you like happened to us in Jamaica.
Now... the annoying ! The top of the list is the beach towel card system. I kid you not on this one !! When we checked in, we were issued 4 cards that were to be used to exchange for towels. No card... No towel ! They stressed that if you didn't return a card or any of the cards at check out, you'd be charged $20 for EACH TOWEL. Seriously ?!?! They weren't even good beach towels. They were just cheap pool towels. With the kind of money these places rake in, They can just suck it up and lose a few towels. Give me a break ! The food was pretty much the same no matter which place you went to. The main buffet( the Colonial) was large but some of the food was just Blah ! We made a res for the Hibachi expecting it to be like a Japanese steak house here at home. NOPE ! It was another buffet only Asian food. Jeez ! They could have just put out an Asian section at the Colonial. The drinks were weak and the bartenders were... Not rude but just like indifferent to us. Don't drink the beer unless you like whizz. It's a lot like Coors Light but only a lot worse. Make sure you have sandals with you everytime you go anywhere. Don't go barefoot after 11 am. The sidewalks are paved with some kind of black brick and is VERY hot. I was planning to use the gym. It was advertised as having a nice one and I found a pic of it that did look very nice. I'm running a 5 mile ( no... not 5K... 5 mile) road race on 6/23 and I was trying to maintain my training level. NEXT week is supposed to be my taper week. The pic is of the more expensive Riu next door, with NO exchange privileges. I tried the treadmill ( the ONE treadmill) in the "gym" on Caribean Street. It's not AC'd and that treadmill was like 20 years old and didn't work right. I still ran but I did it on the walkway from the end of Caribean Street up to the back door of the expensive next door place. The only good part of it was the conditioning for heat I got doing that.
Would I go back?? Maybe/ probably but I'd do some things different. I'd make it a shorter stay like maybe 3 full days and put the the extra money into staying at the expensive place.
