My boyfriend (28 years old) and I (22 years old) just returned from the Grand Oasis Punta Cana and absolutely loved it! Right away, I am going to highly recommend this resort to everyone and anyone. It had been a last minute and quick decision for us and we really lucked out with such a beautiful place!
Check-in: We arrived around noon and official check-in wasn’t until 3pm and our room wasn’t yet available, so we went swimming right away. That said, bring a bathing suit and change of clothes in your carry-on if you plan to arrive at a time before check-in; get a head start on enjoying the resort.
The room: We stayed in Block 5 in room 5201 on the second floor. It had a very large king size bed, lots of room, lovely furniture and deco, television, and a huge wrap-around balcony with a beautiful view of the walk-ways between blocks. The bed was very comfortable, and the room was very clean everyday. The woman who took care of our room’s name was Altagracia and she was an extremely lovely woman who really took care of us. The first day I left her a note (which I had translated into proper Spanish before the trip) introducing ourselves and letting her know we wanted extra bottled water, toilet paper, and towels, and she delivered (and more!) every single day, leaving the room spotless, with everything we requested, and beautiful flowers on our tables. We tipped her $1 US every morning and gave little gifts every morning as well -- a large gift package at the end of the week for all of her hard work. I only spotted one small bug in our room during our week stay, and one large moth in the hallway, that’s it. Also, $18 for the safety deposit box in your room, but well worth it for the peace of mind and security.
Grounds: Well taken care of and maintained. Lots of effort put into the gardening and flowers and decoration, a truly beautiful resort! One of our favourite parts is the pond with the real pink flamingos – very cool!
Beach: People’s view of the beach can go either way. Our first two days there the water was clear and not much seaweed. Later in the week there were random parts with lots of seaweed. We think it just depends on the day and mother nature, you can’t expect them to clean the ocean itself, so anyone who complains about that is ridiculous. As for where the sand meets the water, it is pretty clean, but once again mother nature can’t be controlled. However, every single day first thing in the morning and again throughout the day, the workers are out there raking and wheeling away the weeds that wash ashore. They work really hard, so it is ridiculous when people complain about such things as seaweed on the sand. It’s just nature. If you want clear water free of seaweed, swim in the pool. We spent lots of the time in the ocean, just avoid the overly weedy part, there’s lots of space to choose from! I recommend buying small blow-up floaters and/or snorkeling goggles – lots more fun in the ocean (and cheaper to bring than to buy there)!
Huts: If you don’t like to be in the sun non-stop, but love the beach/pool, do sacrifice some sleep and get a hut in the morning. I woke up everyday at 6:45/7:00am to head to the beach (this goes for the shade in the pool area as well) to grab a spot. Lots of people put their towels/things down and take off, but I stayed there. Very cool, calm and quiet in the morning, it’s enjoyable! Some days by 7:15am all the huts were reserved.
Pools: Pools are fabulous! Very clean and in beautiful designs. One swim-up bar in the main big pool, and there are about 4-5 other pools. We often swam in the pool near Block 7 as it was quiet and had more shade on the hotter days. There is also an adult pool that is the only pool open past 7pm (until 11pm) that we frequented. The pools are great -- no complaints there!
Food: If you are a picky eater, you will have problems wherever you go – so to everyone else, please don’t read too much into some of the reviews, you never know who is reviewing! The main restaurant is Windows and it’s a buffet with a huge variety of food. Great bread/bun selection (over a dozen kinds to choose from), lots of fresh fruit, lots of vegetarian and non-vegetarian things to eat. A big pasta section where the chef will custom cook your pasta for you. Always 2 other chefs, cooking different things (usually a large roast, or a large turkey, or a large fish, etc.). Every night, dinner has a different theme such as Dominican, Mexican, International, Italian, Beach Party, etc. So there will be a great variety at dinner; still a great variety at lunch. Won’t get specific, but soo much to choose from for meals and desserts. There are 4-5 a la carte restaurants. Reservations go quickly and there is a dress code. Also there is the Beach Garden restaurant that has fried chicken, nachos, pizza, burgers all afternoon on the beach, as well as they do the 11pm-6am snack menu. They only had burgers during the evening snack period our first 2 nights so we stopped going, but they might have offered more of a variety throughout the week. Do pack snacks in your luggage for the trip, just in case.
Activities: Although we chose to spend most of the week just relaxing, there were many activities being offered to guests! Everything from nightly family-friendly movies in the outdoor theater, nightly shows in the theater, daily activities on the beach (volleyball, shuffleboard, etc.), the beach party every week, the vendors fair on the resort grounds 2 of the nights, pool tables, video game room for the kids, shopping center, water aerobics, merengue lessons, etc.! Lots to choose from.
Excursions: You'll have many people coming up to you trying to get you to go on an excursion with them. Our Sunwing representative warned us that some of them are fine, but others are not reliable at all, so it's your own risk either way. Sunwing approved of and introduced 2 excursions that would be safe, so I would stick to those excursions through your travel agency/their orientation session.
People/Staff: The people of the Dominican Republic are absolutely lovely. They are polite, they are personal, and extremely friendly. They try speaking English and they love when you try to speak Spanish, we had lots of fun with that. You don't have to tip everyone, but you will find that many are much deserving of a tip or gift. We felt very well taken care of. Even the vendors who are trying to sell you something, have an open mind, be friendly and have fun with it with them if you plan to buy something. If you don't, politely decline and walk away. Reviewers who have voiced irritation over the vendors need to loosen up and get rid of their social issues.
Check-out: Took maybe 5 minutes tops, quick and easy.
Overall, a fabulous resort. I would go back in a second and highly recommend it. Arrive there with an open mind, and read all of the travel tips to be prepared (especially re: bringing your own medication. Very, very expensive to buy from there. One single Pepto tablet = $1US!). And mostly importantly, don't drink the tap water (even when brushing your teeth)! :)
