It's been a while since my last review of this resort so I thought it was time to update it. Happily it's still one of our favorite places to stay in Punta Cana.
We've been to this resort 6 times now and we keep coming back because it's very consistent in food, staff & surroundings. It really is beautiful. We've been to other resorts where the staff walks past you, head down not even a smile but that never happens here. Always an Hola as you pass.
This trip, we were back in Building 5, first floor pool view. I prefer 6 or 8 and would like to never go back to 5 s we've been in this building twice and got colds both times. This time my hubby got it first, 3 days into our stay. Now I don't think it's the hotels fault that we got sick but why push my luck? Next time, anything BUT 5 please.
The only other sad thing about this trip was my disappointment that after 5 previous stays here the hotel did not think to offer us an upgrade to Premium, even though I asked for one before we arrived. Rumor has it the gentleman I emailed was no longer there and no one had access to his email. At check in I mentioned that we'd been here 5 times before and were really hoping for an upgrade this time due to our loyalty.. The H10 Premium rep was also surprised that we were not upgraded yet was apparently not empowered to do anything about it. Go figure. Apparently brand loyalty doesn't carry the same weight it does here in the US, something I mentioned to the General Manager in an email while still in-resort.
To his credit, he responded to my note very quickly and that he hoped we'd give them another chance to make it up to us and that I should contact him directly before our next stay and he personally would handle all the details for us. He advised that he was out of town but that the Resident Manager would be contacting me about our stay and would see what he could do to "compensate me for the inconvenience" (his wording). Several hours later we received a call from someone in Guest Services (not the Resident Manager) asking how our stay was and if he could make us reservations for dinner at the Steak House. Well, since hubby was already sick by then, I declined. After all, I could make reservations if I wanted them. This did not seem like much of an offer for an unhappy repeat visitor. We never did hear from the Manager, guess he figured he could delegate the issue down without a thought. WRONG.
Don't get me wrong, or assume it's a bad place. I still love the resort and the staff and will most likely go back again but frankly I'm still stunned by the lack of effort to keep a repeat guest happy who's been there so often and recommended this resort to many family and friends. We've been to other resorts where Management was offering upgrades and freebies after 1 stay. They obviously get it!
Now for the important stuff. The food was still really good, maybe even better. The Lasagna at the Italian restaurant was to die for. Definitely have that and if you go to the steak house (yes we'd already gone) have the Filet. It was very tender and tasty. The Sirloin, not as good but still decent. My favorite way to end the evening was and is still Mike's Coffee. Mocha Chino and dessert, always great. Take it out to the patio and enjoy while people watching.
The Timeshare or H10 Premium staff do regularly ask for some of your time but we've always simply said no thanks, done that and moved on. They were not overly aggressive as they have been at other times and in other resorts. Even the Beach vendors that come on property one or two times a week were fewer and less aggressive. Absolutely an improvement.
I must give props to Vladimir at the swim up bar! He was excellent and kept my glass full all week. Look for him and be sure to tip him early on for the best service. It only takes a few $'s to feel like you're getting special attention.
I still love this resort and the people on staff so I'm sure we'll be back and would still recommend this to others (and have again). The resort is large but very well laid out so you always know where you are in relation to other parts of the resort. Something I've missed at other large resorts. The staff here really does try to accommodate any special requests, just wish they were a bit more "empowered" by management. Hopefully they'll read this review and learn from it.
I'm happy to answer any questions you might have about this resort. If you're considering it, please go. I'm confident you'll have a wonderful time. We did, even if it was a bit shorter (due to colds) than we expected.
