My husband and I spent a week at the Royal Decameron. We have been to other locations in the Caribbean but this was our first trip to Jamaica.
The location so close to the airport is great if, like us, you hate long transfers to your hotel. The planes coming in to land did not bother us at all. Our room was very clean but a bit shabby, with marks on the floor and a very wobbly table. The air-con worked fine and we had a lovely view of the ocean.
The beaches are small but the sand is white and clean. I would recommend a trip to Doctors Cave Beach a few minutes walk up the road if you want a big beach. The pools are not massive and could get a bit dirty due to the trees overhanging and dropping leaves etc into the water but there was usually a guy with a net to keep the pools clean. There were plenty of sunbeds so you didn't need to rush down at 6am with your towels to reserve a good spot!
We found the food to be really good. No chips (french fries) the whole time, which is a welcome change from most hotels! It was nice to eat some Jamaican food and we didn't get upset tummies. We enjoyed the a la carte restaurant for a break from the buffet style meals. We only ate at the snack bar once and that was good too.
The service, on the whole, was good and most people seemed really friendly, with the exception of the rude and dismissive reception staff. Luckily we had no problems to sort out and didn't need to speak to them much. The waiters and barmen didn't seem to be angling for you to tip them but appreciated it when you did. I've noted other comments on Tripadvisor about how some guests don't tip all the time but in countries other than US/Canada it is often customary to tip for good service, as we did, rather than at every opportunity regardless of the the service. I don't feel obliged to hand over a dollar to someone for splashing some beer in a glass without so much as a smile (but this was rare).
There were very few children at the hotel when we were there, which was a plus for us. There was a nice mix of nationalities and a good atmosphere. On the few occasions we left the grounds, we didn't get hassled on the Hip Strip and felt quite safe but we didn't experience it at night. In general, the hotel is small compared to other sprawling complexes we've stayed at but that added to its charm. I would definitely recommend it.
