I have been to Jamaica 6 times and thouroughly enjoyed it, but always to mo bay, obviously i was a little apprehensive changing resort and hotel. Needless to say I had nothing to worry about.
The riu hotel, turned out to be a dream holiday in comparison to my previous experiences of Jamaica, the hotel was fantastic, the staff could not do enough for you, there was no problems getting served at the bars, and the food was out of this world, in my 2 week stay there I still didnt manage to sample everything, you must try the jerk chicken served on the beach everyday from 12.00, it the real thing, just as the locals would have it!!. there is so much variety in food you can eat healthy or eat your self stupid, needless to say I followed the latter. there is a number of restaurants that need to be booked in advance, which I had no problem getting into, just a quick phone call at 9.00am, but to be honest the standard in the buffet restaurant was so high, that I preffered to eat thier most nights .
The room was beyond my expectations, as i had not upgraded, spacious bright ,clean, fully stocked fridge(at no extra charge) liquor dispensor, large balcony over looking the pool and beach, my sister had booked a junior suite, and too be honest the position of my room was far better, and there was very little difference between the decor .
But what made my holiday special was the locals, at the end of the beach, and in particularly Don juan a local tour operator(so he calls himself) a typical smooth talking jamaican, we did most of our tours with him, they cost us half the price and where more personal, he can also get you a taxi for the day, and will take you whereever you want on the island, our cost us 300 dollars for eleven of us, the best trip my daughter enjoyed was the horse back riding, I refrained from this as I had done it on previous years with chukka, but when they came back i wish I had gone, they had the most amazing experiance, picked up in what looked like a car from the 70s!!, and taken over the road to thier horses, from here they went up into the country and into a small jamaican town, talking to the local children and adults, my daughter said he felt like she had actually experienced the real jamaica, and all for 30 dollars, dont be put off by don juans loud voice his a real charecter. There is also a lady at the end of the beach, just before the craft market who does a wonderful massage at half the price of the hotel in a little wooden hut, other local experience to be tried.
The only negative thing I have to comment on the riu was the entertainment, but thats just down to personal choice, it felt a bit benidorm style to me, i would have liked to have seen more local music, but apparently it does'nt go down well with everyone!!??
