“Don't stay here if you have a bad back!! The beds are TERRIBLE!!!!!!”

The resort is absolutely beautiful and intimate, the rooms gorgeous, the staff exceptional, the food delicious...so you can imagine how disappointed AND surprised we were to discover that the beds are absolutely terrible and cheap, cheap, cheap. Ok, so I will admit that I am a bit of a bed snob and love Westin's for their Heavenly Beds; but people, this was ridiculous! I've slept on better beds at Motel 8's!!! My husband is a naval officer and he said the bunks on the ships are more comfortable than this thing. So here is the deal: the bed consists of a cheap, FLIMSY, OLD, thin (6 inch), generic mattress (using that term lightly, it was more like a piece of foam rather than mattress) on top of a very low platform. No box spring!!!! After 3 terrible, sleepless nights on this so called bed, we asked to move rooms hoping that maybe other rooms have better accomodations, but no, they do not, all rooms have exactly the same bed set up. It was so unacceptable that we asked for, and received, a refund and a transfer to another resort. The manager even called around other resorts to find us a room AND got us a room upgrade at the other resort. SATP is a class act and we would go back there in a heartbeat if only they would upgrade their beds or at least buy some box springs!!!!!!

My wife and I travelled here for our honeymoon in February 2008 and I must say that the reviews that others posted for Sunset are quite accurate. I researched for a quite a while for the perfect place to go for our honeymoon and decided on Sunset.

For the most part the resort lived up to my expectations, the staff were incredibly friendly and more than accommodating to our needs, the grounds are kept very neat and well manicured, the beach was a short walk and never crowded and the rooms were spectacular. Jamaica is the most laid back place you could visit! ‘No problem, Mon’ truly is heard everywhere, especially from the staff at the resort. Nothing is ever a problem, which is so different from home. If you want relaxation and a romantic getaway this is definitely the place for you.

Having said this there are a couple things that we weren’t as impressed about. The first, being the knowledge of the staff. As friendly and helpful as they are, some were unclear as to the schedule of the resort. I was quite excited to go to the a la carte on Valentines Day so I confirmed with the staff that it would be open and available on that day. However, when we went to the restaurant there was a wedding reception and it was not open to the rest of the guests at the resort. It’s fine that it was reserved for the reception, but it would have been nice if that was communicated to all staff so we could have made alternative arrangements. Also, when asking about the various tours the staff did not know enough to guide us in the right direction.

The second was the spa. We arrived for our massages and no one was there. After waiting a while they showed up and we got started. The facilities were fine, however the music that they had playing was similar to say a top 40 station. We asked to have them turn it off, which they did. The massage itself was not all that great and the prices were higher than what was written in our room. All together it wasn’t the greatest spa experience.

Other than those things our trip was fantastic and I would highly recommend this resort for others travelling to Negril. Much different than those monster hotels where your experience feels so impersonal. The food selection wasn’t that big, however you can’t expect that with only 86 rooms and the quality made it up for lack of quantity!

“Wonderful! If they could just change a few little things it would be perfect.”

Sunset at the Palms

My boyfriend and I stayed at SATP for 2 weeks last July. Generally everything you have read about the place so far is true. The rooms are wonderful, I especially adored the daybeds. The beach is so beautiful. The food at the beach bar and grill is awesome and the drinks at the beach and the pool are divine. The martini bar is also fab for pre-dinner drinks.

Some points to note though:

1. There are no books, or book exchanges so if you don't go with enough of your own you will have to go into town to buy some more. Not a biggie for most people but I love to read so I would have liked to have known this before I went.
2. There is tons of left over food after every meal ( I mean tons) and the hotel won't actually let the staff take any of it. I find this quite appalling , given the level of poverty in Jamaica. It's such a waste.
3. We went in July and when the sun was out it was fantastic but you do get at least 2 -3 hours a day of rain in the afternoon. Even then when the rain is finished the sun is not as brilliant as the morning - though still nice.

Now, don't get me wrong we really really loved SATP and the above are not complaints as such, merely some information for you. We debated long and hard about whether to go back this year. In the end we have decided not to for the following reasons, and these are the points I think people should be most aware of:

1. The food. Apart from the beach bar and grill the food is pretty dissapointing. It really is the same food served each night with a different theme i.e. Hawaiian, Japanese etc. I though it was odd that they didn't serve Jamaican food as surely this is what they are really good at? I don't see why they would feel the need to serve food from other parts of the world. People come on holiday for something different and they are never going to be able to cook it as well as native Hawaiian or Japanese people etc. They also rotate the menu each week so although we handled 2 weeks of it, the thought of eating like that for another 2 weeks this year is not very appealing.

2. The TV by the pool. This is on all day and evening very loudly. It does ruin the peacful atmosphere - enough for us so that it has contributed to us not coming back. I think a fair compromise would be to have the tv on for people to watch but with the volume off as it's all sports anyway.

3. Noise again! There must be some sort of gathering place near to SATP's area of the beach as again all day there is loud music pumping at you. The beach is so peacful and beautiful apart from this and it does ruin the atmosphere. We are a couple in our late 20's / early 30's so we are not fuddy duddies by any means and a little bit of music when you want it is great! But not all day, when you have no control over it.

So, those are the 3 reasons we won't be retunring to SATP. I will also add, that we were assigned a 'holiday manager' who worked for the hotel while we were there - Andrew I believe. We did tell him our thoughts during the first week when we came and sat with us at breakfast and asked us for our opinion, but even while we were telling him he was looking around like he was bored and would rather be elsewhere and then didn't get back to us after promising he would. We both felt that we would rather not have been asked and had false expectations set than be asked and blown off.

In summary, SATP is a beautiful place to stay and I think that aspect of it will be hard to beat and this is what made the decision not to return so difficult to make. Unfortuantely there are just enough little things wrong with it that is has put off 2 people who otherwise would love to have returned.

We celebrated our anniversary at SATP 3.20 - 3.29. The beauty of the beach/grounds really exceeded our expectations.

The rooms are small...but lovely & comfortable. Stay away from 708, 704 & 715 (face employee apts next door). We requested a mini fridge upon arrival, it was immediately delivered to our room at a cost of 6$ per day. You can purchase beer/pop/snacks at the Pet Com, within walking distance....turn left exiting the resort.

Take photo ID if you need the bank in town. The ATM was down & tellers only accept photo ID inside the bank. A taxi outside SATP will take you to town for 10$.

We visited Negril beach...the SATP beach in Bloody Bay is much nicer (quiet & clean).

You absolutely need rafts to float in the bay. The gift shop sells them & there are usually a few left behind at the beach (we took our own & left them).

Clives Transportation Service Jamaica (www.clivestransportservicejamaica.com) will provide private transfer to/from the airport for 60$ one way. They provide an excellent service, equipped with cold red stripe upon arrival. They also provide tours/taxi service in town.

SATP has a beach BBQ every Friday PM & allows local merchant to display wares for purchase at the beach every Thursday. We purchased art/towels from their vendor. The gift shop is very reasonable for T-shirts etc...

How can anyone complain about the food? Yes...they did have a cold buffet every day, this was in addition to the various hot buffet items available. They're very careful to have something to please everyone.

We did receive a number of bug bites (most did), but it wasn't a problem. We found they were biting at the open air restaurant early AM & PM. We didn't have a problem in our room (other than a very tiny lizard on the last day). I think you have to anticipate a few bug bites due to the lovely tropical surroundings.

The beach is outstanding! Do be aware that Couples has a nude beach (fairly well secluded) far left of SATP beach. We didn't see anyone wonder out of the nude beach area & we didn't see any topless bathing near our beach. We've never experienced such calm, clear, lovely water. You can literally float the day away here.

The staff are fantistic....hey to Esmond and Greg at the bar, Kenroy in the lobby & Fitzroy the beach chef. The front desk & restaurant staff were all great.

Overall....a lovely quite all inclusive providing peaceful surroundings not typical of a tropical paradise. We would likely go back again.

Hello to all the great people we met from Atlanta, Wisconsin & Long Beach & Ohio.

Don't forget to tip !!
