We decided to change things up a bit this trip and get a condo from 1/9/08 to 1/16/08. We usually stay at Shields in Negril but we had a large group with us and two of the couples were kind of on a tight budget. We arrived after dark on 1/9/08. The power was out but the staff was very helpful and gave us candles and took us to the room. The power was out throughout Negril but came back on within a couple of hours. We all enjoyed our stay very much.
Here are the pros and cons we found:
Pros
-Condo units provided plenty of room. We rented a three bedroom unit for 4 couples. The unit came with 7 beds, three bathrooms, two kitchens, and two porches. Plenty of room for a large group!
-Having two kitchens, we were able to stock up on all of our meals and drinks. This is by far the most cost effective way to stay in Jamaica a/i or non a/i.
-The property was quite large and had several amenities. It had a pool, hot tub, on site massage, souvenior shop, bar, restaurant, small grocery store, art store, and many activities going on.
-The maid service came daily and was very friendly.
-Plenty of beach chairs
-The interior of the propery had a very nice, well kept tropical garden.
-The beach is quite large in comparison to other hotels located on Negril's beach.
-Property is local friendly. We have family and friends in Jamaica. All of them were allowed on the property and in our rooms hassle free. This is not possible at many hotels in Negril.
-Good location towards the end of the beach. Bourbon Beach is only about a minute walk away for night life.
-All of the staff was friendly. The front desk, the maids, the servers, and the bar tenders all were very nice.
Cons
-Property is a bit dated. Everything is clean but in one of the couple's unit the stereo still had an 8 track player, old appliances, etc... For the price it is more than adequate though. Each unit is different as each is owned by someone else. The unit/room my wife and I shared was great though.
-We did have a semi bad experience with one of the security guards. He constantly wanted to come into the unit to hang out, drink, and smoke. He was young and apparently new. At first we were surprised he was security but let him come in as he was a nice guy. He started coming up uninvited though. My friend's wife came upstairs late one night and walked in the unit to find him there alone so we had to tell him that he couldn't come up anymore. Nothing was missing and she had left the door unlocked but he still should not have come in. I think he was just looking to party not thief but never the less he shouldn't of gone in there uninvited. Half way through the week we were informed by the older security guard that he had been let go because he had been caught doing this with many of the guests and didn't seem too interested in doing his job. Obviously the problem was addressed even though we did not report it.
Overall we really enjoyed ourselves and wouldn't hesitate to stay here again. For a large group or someone looking to save money by eating in instead of out this property is perfect. I would rate it an 8 out of 10. Its not real fancy but very adequate and a very good value.
