We booked this hotel when it was Coral Seas, but upon arriving saw that it had changed ownership and was now Sunset On The Beach. This was our first time to Jamaica with our three young girls, so we were truly looking forward to having a blast. The young woman at the front desk was lackluster to say the least, which is pretty much par for the course at the front desk I'm afraid. Everyone there was pleasant enough, but just not the outgoing people I've gotten used to dealing with when in JA. Upon arrival, I was asked for a credit card so they could make an imprint for the safe key. No problem. Got checked in and things seemed ok. Got to the room and one of the bulbs was busted in the kids bedroom. Ricardo went to get a new one and came back about 1 1/2 hours later. Again, we're in JA so I'm good. The food there is pretty good, and the wait staff and bartenders are very friendly. My girls especially loved Alecia and always asked when she was going to be there so we could eat at the restaraunt on her shifts. The hotel is at the end of the beach, near Negril River, so when the rain comes in the mountains and the tide shifts, the water can be pretty murky. It was actually brown on two occasions during our stay, which was a bummer, but didn't last for too long. The security there is great at shooing off stray dogs, but not so good at getting rid of unwanted higglers, who actually came and sat up under our cabana and grabbed my husbands hand in trying to get him to buy a bracelet. Again, the other hotels we have stayed at have had great security, so this was a big downer for us, especially with the girls there. Went into town one night to the ATM, and couldn't find my card. Went back to the hotel and frantically searched my stuff because I couldn't recollect using it since we had left Salt Lake. Had to cancel my card after a long search because I couldn't find it. Luckily my husband had one linked to the same account so we were ok. After calming down a bit, I realized I had given it to the front desk to make an imprint of it. Could they have kept it? My hubby went up to the desk and, sure enough, they went right to the drawer and pulled it out. Now, this had been two days that had gone by since we checked in. They had called us numerous times in our room to let us know we had visitors, or our car was waiting, etc. and nobody bothered to let us know we had left our card there. Great...thanks for nothing. I was pretty peeved about that because there was just no excuse for it, just incompetence on the part of the front desk staff. The rest of the stay went fine, it was just one little thing after another and in the end it adds up to me not wanting to go back to this place again. The manager is nice enough and greeted us while we were having dinner one night to see how things were, but the new owner was there half of our stay and we saw her multiple times at the beach and up at the cliffs and she never even acknowledged our existence. Her family/friends that were there were very cordial, but I would have thought she would have just said hey, how are things going....guess not. She was so busy redoing the paint and decor that the guests just disappeared I guess. Another word on security...I was walking down to one of the cabanas one day with my arms laden with snorkeling gear, towels and gear for five. I didn't notice, but one of our flippers fell on the sand. Instead of picking it up for me, the security guy whistles for my attention from his chair under the tree and points to the flipper. Thanks a bunch...helpful folks, I tell you! This could be a much better resort with just a few tweaks in personnel and some more training I think, but until those things happen, I'll definitely be staying elsewhere.
So, to sum up things in a nutshell:
Pros: Fairly priced accomodations that are clean, good sized beach, decent water pressure and a fair amount of hot water for showers, close walk to town, pretty good bar/wait staff, decent food
Cons: Lackluster front desk/reception staff bordering on incompetent, murky water at times because of the proximity to Negril River, Lack of security, Laziness of some of the staff, owner doesn't seem too interested in the guests...may just be a hectic time right now for her, so who knows.........?????
