What a bargain! We spent a fun long weekend at Caribbean Sunset Resort. The word “Resort” is a little optimistic in this instance though. The grounds and buildings are nicely laid out, and are very pleasant.
Our room was clean, though not particularly large. We had a big balcony which would have been fabulous if there had been a chair. Very strange that we had no windows. Where there should have been a double glass door we had louvers. So either you had a dark room with the louvers closed, or fresh air with them open. Mosquitoes weren’t a problem, and we traveled all the way here for the warmth, so we left them open mostly and didn’t use the a/c. It was never uncomfortable. About half the buildings had glass instead of louvers.
The spacious open-air restaurant was very pleasant and overlooked the bar and well tended pool area. Our dinner was reasonably priced, and the food exceeded our expectations, though the service was just as slow as every other place in town. Strangely they don’t accept credit cards. We didn’t have enough cash on hand so they billed it to our room. They don’t take credit cards at the front desk either, so at check-out we still had to pay our restaurant tab with cash. Weird.
An empty closet served as the computer room. Their computer and the accompanying Wi-Fi were available 24/7 for free; an unexpected treat.
The hotel is not new, and it shows. There is a certain weathered look to much of it, though the restaurant, bar, pool area is fresh. The basketball/tennis court is abandoned and overgrown with weeds. The exercise room is nothing more than two treadmills in a spare closet. The rec. room is two pool tables in a small defunct bar.
The hotel is a half block up the hill from the apparent city square, another block to the “roundabout”, and one more block to the beach. This is the middle of everything! Scotia Bank ATM offering both JA and US dollars, a grocer, the taxi lot (always a ride available here), T shirt shops, night clubs, cafés, even a Burger King serving genuine Blue Mountain coffee, all within a 5 min walk.
What would have made our stay better: Chairs on the balcony. More than one washcloth per room per day. Pool/beach towels. Windows with screens. Shampoo. Quiet ceiling fans. Phones in the rooms (so you can call the front desk) Credit card acceptance. Softer beds.
This is not a top tier hotel, and is priced accordingly.
Stay here and relax! We did!
