I was at the Jewel Runaway Bay from 6/21/12 to 6/28/12 to celebrate my daughter’s high school graduation. I wasn’t sure what to expect with the changeover happening so shortly before we got there. I can pretty much stay anywhere and have a good time, but I was worried about construction going on, which could be loud and annoying. Thankfully, construction was not at all a problem. You could tell that Jewel was making improvements every day, but they made sure it was as non-intrusive as possible. I can imagine what the place will look like in a few months if they keep going at the same pace! The rooms are a bit outdated right now, but it sounds like everything will be getting updated soon. But, who stays in their room on vacation anyway, so who cares as long as it’s clean (which it was). You can tell Breezes must not have cared at the end and let things slip, but like I said, it was obvious during our stay that Jewel was working hard and fast at making changes and improvements.
The resort’s property is fantastic. The beach was a great size and we NEVER had trouble finding chairs to lay out at. The last resort I went to in Jamaica had a very rocky beach, so I expected the same at JRB, so was pleasantly surprised to find a gorgeous sandy beach. The best part? You can snorkel right in the roped off area and see several different kinds of fish. Bring some bread with you from the buffet & the fish swim right up & eat it out of your hands. Snorkeling outside the ropes was even better, just make sure you don’t go near the reef (or the guards will sic your wife on you, like they did to my husband. Haha.)
The water sports that are included are numerous & really add to the value of the trip. My daughter & her friend tried every water sport that was available for free, and loved them all. I personally did the snorkeling trip from the glass bottom boat (definitely worth your time, don’t miss it!), and I also went kayaking, which was fun.
If you enjoy massages, you have to get one at the Blue Mahoe spa! I am very picky about massages, and am almost always disappointed when I get one while at a resort, but I was not disappointed this time. I get deep tissue massages regularly at home, but for some reason, resort spas usually don’t use enough pressure for my liking. The massage I got while at JRB was great though, and 3 other girls in our group got one and were happy as well. They were a bit pricey, but worth it.
As many have said in their reviews, the #1 selling point for this resort is the employees. They knew our names within hours of being there, and were all so friendly. I didn’t encounter one negative employee the whole time we were there, which was surprising, I mean, everyone has a bad day now and again, right? Well, if they were having a bad day, they didn’t show it. A very special thank you to Shurline, Sophia, Demar, Christopher (even though he helped my husband’s team cheat while we were playing a board game! LOL), Keisha, Chadwick, Crazy J, John from the grill, and Shannon. Although all the employees were great, these employees really stood out for us, especially Shurline, who was there to greet us with a smile every morning at breakfast. And of course I can’t forget Scott, who seems to be doing a great job running the place. He was always out & about (don’t you ever go home? LOL), and always made time to chat with the guests.
It was a great trip and I would definitely recommend JRB for anyone looking for a nice, relaxing vacation with plenty of options to keep you busy. I hope to get back there someday, sooner rather than later!
