My husband and I just returned from our first ever trip alone in 23 years of marriage! Our 6 kids are now at an age where we felt comfortable going away - so we did! For 7 nights we stayed at Breezes Runaway Bay, Jamaica and we had the time of our life! We loved everything about the resort and the people! The room was plenty for us, the food was awesome, the entertainment was fun, scenery and beach was amazing, and met a lot of new friends! We do not drink alcohol, but for those who do, let me tell you, there is a ton of it here! We had a great time!
We went snorkeling, sunfish sailing, glass bottom boat riding and that was all for no additional cost. The staff in the watersports area were very nice, but our favorite person there was Keston, a lovely 19 year old boy who works there and is so sweet! He took us out on our first sunfish sailing ride and he showed my husband how to handle the boat because we had said we wanted to take it out alone the next time. He even sang to us on the boat - it was the sweetest time ever!
Off of the resort, we went to Dunns River Falls, which I'd highly recommend - we arranged it through the front desk. If I remember correctly this cost $60 for both of us to do (that includes transportation and the tour- it's about a 30 minute ride to the Falls) (they sell a video afterwards, I think that was $30 - If you take your camera, one of the guides will carry it and they stopped for our group 3 times and took pictures - If you aren't taking a camera, don't worry, they will offer you a picture for about $8 as they take pictures of each person or couple in the group in front of one of the falls.)
The front desk at Breezes gives you a paper when you check in of all of the tours they provide and the cost. If you are thinking of going, you could probably contact them for the paper ahead of time so you can research all of the different venues.
We also went on the Chukka Zip LIne Canopy Tour - this was $170 for us together to do. This was BREATHTAKING fun! I would not recommend it, however, if you have any trouble walking down alot of stairs. We walked down steps for about 10 minutes before we got started on the zip lines. The place was located just about 10 minutes east of the resort, they take you by bus, then you get out, sign a waiver, then reboard the bus to be taken high up into the hills - lots of nice scenery - I'm guessing the 2nd portion of the bus ride was about 15 minutes. There were 9 "zips" in all that we did. The first 3 or 4 you wait after you get to the next tree for all of the people to get done (there were about 40 I'm guessing with us), but after that, it starts going very fast and you get to a landing and step around the tree to the other side and they send you right on your way again flying through the jungle-like area.
The other tour we left the resort for was for a shopping trip to Ocho Rios. We liked Taj Mahal shopping, and they were going to take us to the straw market but the other couple with us (yes, only two couples on the bus) did not care to go there, so we didn't go to that, and instead went to a different shopping "mall" which is right where the tourists come off of the cruise ships, naturally, the prices were not good there. The shopping tour was $30.
We also took a bicycle tour of the area across the road from the resort, we were gone for about 40 minutes - a nice ride.
We learned alot about Jamaican culture just by talking to the people we came in contact with. They were all very VERY friendly. Many of the Jamaican's do not have very much money, but they are very happy people - lessons to be learned!!
After you get to the resort, there is no need for your wallet unless you are planning on buying something. Truly all meals, drinks, watersports, bike rides, etc. are included and no tip is ever expected. When we travelled we did always tip our bus driver. We exchanged addresses with our favorite resort employees and my plan is to keep in contact with them and send them a personal gift in this way.
Make sure you bring plenty of sunscreen as the sun is very strong here. Also, I would pack an extra pair of sunglasses as I broke mine and I thought they were a little pricey at the gift shop (also, sunscreen is around $15 at the gift shop).
We did also leave the private beach onto the public beach. I would not advise it unless you are prepared for it. They are rather aggressive sales people out there. We were also offered gangi (Jamaican marijuana) on the public beach, simply said no thanks, and that was fine, they left you alone. Now if you said no thank you to the other merchandise, t-shirts, jewelry, wood carvings, they didn't take no thanks very well and kept pushing you to buy from them. If they would have just left me alone, I would have bought much more than I did.
We hope to return to Breezes Runaway Bay again! WE LOVED THIS PLACE!!!
