From the moment we arrived, to the moment we left, we loved this hotel. Except, that is, for the times when we were in our room. But even with that caveat, this is an excellent hotel, and I would stay there again in a heartbeat.
The room: The room was fairly small. The bed was small. The bathroom was small. We booked a queen bed room. We have a queen bed at home and I know a queen bed. This was not a queen bed. I was assured by the front desk that it was, but it wasn't. If it was a full, rather than a double bed, I'd be surprised. She assured me that all the other rooms had the same beds. I doubted this but decided to stay put rather than ask for a new Now I am fairly small, but I actually fell out of this bed. And no, it did not involve sangria or other delicious beverage. It was just too small a bed to roll over in. It is pretty funny now, but I had a huge bruise, as the tile floor was not a good landing pad. (nor were my high heel wedge sandals). I recommend you not roll over in bed.
There was a little table with little chairs. No place to relax in the room. But that was ok, because here's where the hotel gets good... even great!
The hotel property: Oh my! How wonderful!! This hotel's charm lies outside the rooms, in nooks and crannies all over the hotel. There is a lovely little plunge pool, on a nice sliver of a terrace with loungers with towel service. There is a covered area with tables and chairs adjacent to the pool area, and another beautiful covered terrace with tables and cushioned chairs where you can enjoy a glass of wine, beer, coffee or tea from the honor bar area just inside. There is another long sun deck overlooking the interior courtyard and each floor of the hotel has chairs, tables outside of each room on a wide corridor that rings the courtyard. This is where we sat almost any time we were not out and about wandering Old San Juan. There is a little library, and no doubt we missed some other little hidden corners to sit and read or just enjoy this great little property.
Activities: We used the 'beach club' service, and found the sister property to be a nice alternative for a day. The front desk arranged everything and made the day easy and seamless. The beach was ok, not great. But the beach service (umbrella, chairs and facilities at the hotel) were quite nice.
We thought we would hit the beach more than we did, but Old San Juan was just such a joy to explore. There are plenty of touristy souvenir stores for the cruise ship day trippers, but there are also many excellent art galleries, excellent restaurants and sights to see. El Morro was a surprise and well worth the walk. Incredible views of the roiling sea at the harbor into San Juan and La Perla. Walking outside the city wall to the city gate, and back up into the town was well worth the time. Old San Juan was fascinating and was excellent for walking. (caveat - not so excellent for walking in heels.) Narrow little blue cobblestone streets, interesting architecture, beautiful balconies brimming with flowers and plants. Loved it!
Dining: The hotel has some excellent restaurants. But there are so many great places to eat in walking distance, make sure you get out and taste the town. In fact, everything is within walking distance.
Overall: We spent five days and thought that was just right to do and see what we wanted to do and see and do without feeling like we missed something or feeling like we had taken one spin too many around town.
