“Much more to love than the room”

From the moment we arrived, to the moment we left, we loved this hotel. Except, that is, for the times when we were in our room. But even with that caveat, this is an excellent hotel, and I would stay there again in a heartbeat.

The room: The room was fairly small. The bed was small. The bathroom was small. We booked a queen bed room. We have a queen bed at home and I know a queen bed. This was not a queen bed. I was assured by the front desk that it was, but it wasn't. If it was a full, rather than a double bed, I'd be surprised. She assured me that all the other rooms had the same beds. I doubted this but decided to stay put rather than ask for a new Now I am fairly small, but I actually fell out of this bed. And no, it did not involve sangria or other delicious beverage. It was just too small a bed to roll over in. It is pretty funny now, but I had a huge bruise, as the tile floor was not a good landing pad. (nor were my high heel wedge sandals). I recommend you not roll over in bed.

There was a little table with little chairs. No place to relax in the room. But that was ok, because here's where the hotel gets good... even great!

The hotel property: Oh my! How wonderful!! This hotel's charm lies outside the rooms, in nooks and crannies all over the hotel. There is a lovely little plunge pool, on a nice sliver of a terrace with loungers with towel service. There is a covered area with tables and chairs adjacent to the pool area, and another beautiful covered terrace with tables and cushioned chairs where you can enjoy a glass of wine, beer, coffee or tea from the honor bar area just inside. There is another long sun deck overlooking the interior courtyard and each floor of the hotel has chairs, tables outside of each room on a wide corridor that rings the courtyard. This is where we sat almost any time we were not out and about wandering Old San Juan. There is a little library, and no doubt we missed some other little hidden corners to sit and read or just enjoy this great little property.

Activities: We used the 'beach club' service, and found the sister property to be a nice alternative for a day. The front desk arranged everything and made the day easy and seamless. The beach was ok, not great. But the beach service (umbrella, chairs and facilities at the hotel) were quite nice.

We thought we would hit the beach more than we did, but Old San Juan was just such a joy to explore. There are plenty of touristy souvenir stores for the cruise ship day trippers, but there are also many excellent art galleries, excellent restaurants and sights to see. El Morro was a surprise and well worth the walk. Incredible views of the roiling sea at the harbor into San Juan and La Perla. Walking outside the city wall to the city gate, and back up into the town was well worth the time. Old San Juan was fascinating and was excellent for walking. (caveat - not so excellent for walking in heels.) Narrow little blue cobblestone streets, interesting architecture, beautiful balconies brimming with flowers and plants. Loved it!

Dining: The hotel has some excellent restaurants. But there are so many great places to eat in walking distance, make sure you get out and taste the town. In fact, everything is within walking distance.

Overall: We spent five days and thought that was just right to do and see what we wanted to do and see and do without feeling like we missed something or feeling like we had taken one spin too many around town.

“Definitely would want to return......”

El Convento Hotel

17 Mar 2008

El Convento is one of the most amazing places to stay in Old San Juan. It is the ideal base to explore the Old city. It has the most beautiful atmosphere and the grounds were outstanding. It is within walking distance of everything such as restaurants, interesting tourist sites, and the waterfront area. They have gorgeous historic reminders of the convent as it once was, and it really made you wonder what it was like to have been there in the day.
The staff was very friendly, the service exceptional, we felt like family in this homey small hotel.
Each evening we enjoyed a complimentary wine & cheese reception by the library, with quality wines that were delicious and well chose, as well as internet access so we could do two things at once. The restaurants in the hotel were excellent, we tried two out of the four due to limited time restraints. We definitely recommend El Patio del Nispero and lunch at Cãna, both were unsurpassed. Room service was also quick and efficient.
We spent alot of time reading & relaxing on the incredible roofdeck, which boasted amazing views and a small pool for cooling off.
Our room had a partial view of San Juan Bay, which made the room so enjoyable, and the luxurious sheets, towels & toiletries lived up to our high standards. The bed was abviously of the highest quality and the flat screen TV was a luxury we don't get to enjoy at all hotels.
If only we had planned more for our trip, we would have gladly stayed there longer, but we would definitely stay there again in the future. Thank you.

“Great hotel in a lovely area”

El Convento Hotel

13 Mar 2008

I recently stayed for one night at El Convento in Old San Juan. It is a lovely hotel set in a building with a long and interesting history. The lobby area feels like you stepped into a museum or an important building of some kind and it's decorated in old pieces to bring out the historic nature of the structure. I had read other reviews that the staff was not responsive to guests, but we had the opposite experience. Our room wasn't ready when we arrived, so the front desk, which was very helpful, stored our bags, told us how to get an internet connection up in their library (which is a nice area with coffee/drinks etc), and then they came up shortly after to tell us our room was ready. There is a pretty bar/lounge in the courtyard of the hotel with a giant tree going all the way up in the middle of the courtyard.

The pool, on the roof top, is quite small, with a hot tub next to it, but there are lounge chairs and it's nice to sit and look out at the old city. Our room had a huge and well-stocked bathroom and was decorated in a unique manner;definitely not the usual chain hotel room. The only negative in the room was that it had a queen size bed (they didn't have many rooms with Kings) which moved when you leaned back against the bedboard to watch TV.

The hotel is located in an utterly charming part of San Juan - small hilly cobblestone streets, with pretty buildings, cafes, stores etc., and it's also just a few blocks from the forts and the water. I would definitely stay here again.

“Wonderful El Convento”

El Convento Hotel

Rochester, NY
8 Mar 2008

We just returned from a 4 night stay at Hotel El Convento in Old San Juan. Our stay was wonderful. We contacted the hotel in advance and the hotel manager, Efrain Rosa, was very gracious and kind. He arranged for us to be upgraded to the Pablo Casals Suite because other suites were unavailable during our stay. The suite was lovely: the hotel itself is a pretty, calm oasis in the middle of Old San Juan. It's walking distance to everything there so you don't need a car. For our anniversary, the hotel created a path of rose petals from the door of our suite leading to an enormous heart of petals on our king-sized bed. They also chilled a bottle of very nice champagne for us and gave us a lovely bouquet of flowers. We enjoyed the many restaurants on site and also the Manager's cocktail reception every evening at 6PM. We also liked the complimentary coffee/tea and honor bar that remained open all day. We enjoyed our stay tremendously, the staff was always friendly, helpful and courteous and we would recommend the hotel highly to anyone staying in lovely Old San Juan.

“Great Hotel”

El Convento Hotel

5 Mar 2008

My husband and I loved this hotel. We only stayed one night while on our way to the BVI to sail and have decided to lengthen next years trip so we can stay at this hotel and enjoy all it has to offer. The location lends itself to exploring Old San Juan in comfort and to enjoy the history of the area.
