We stayed for three nights at the Gallery Inn in early March 2008. While it was a very interesting experience, I am not sure that I would choose to stay there again. As described by others, the hotel is located in a historic building in a prime location in Old San Juan. The owner is an artist, and the hotel is full of her artwork. There are many delightful nooks and crannies to explore, as well as inviting open-air courtyards, filled with tropical plants and colorful parrots. The light breakfast and evening wine and cheese that are served on the outdoor rooftop terrace are very enjoyable. Each of the guest rooms is unique, and your experience at the hotel will probably be determined by which room you are assigned . I do not recall the name of our room, but it was up a very narrow metal spiral staircase. It had a window facing an internal courtyard, as well as french doors opening onto a rooftop terrace with a lovely view, shared with the room next door. The room had a queen bed, and a small sitting area. Unfortunately, the room air conditioner unit was not working, and although they tried to fix it, it continued to not work for our entire stay. When I asked if we could move to another room, the only one available was an attractive room in the front of the hotel, but it had no ensuite bathroom, and you would have to use a bathroom in the hall shared by three rooms. We opted to stay in our original room, and we slept each night with all of the windows and french doors open for air. Also, the shower in our very small bathroom had a quirky shower head, that kept changing from hot to cold water no matter how I adjusted the handle. It was very tricky to take a shower without getting scalded, or drenched with cold water. Given the price that we were paying for the room, I did not feel that we were getting a good value with this room. If you choose this hotel, I would definitely ask to see the room before committing to it. But if you come during the busy season as we did, you may not have many other options if you find that you do not care for the first room that you are assigned.

The Gallery Inn was in a perfect location and was one of the most unique hotels I have ever stayed at. The staff was amazing and very helpful and the hotel it's self was fantastic. There was so much to see and was a home away from home. Each room is a one of a kind and the many courtyards were maze like. Great hotel within walking distance of everything in Old Town and close to the Forts overlooking La Perla. I highly recommend this hotel to anyone who does not like large cookie cutter hotels.

Just returned from my second stay at the Gallery Inn, it was delightful. Owners are very friendly and the staff is more than helpful. Rooms, especially the Vista Suites, are charming and the new pool and surrounding area are beautiful. State of the Art kitchen and dining rooms are perfect for 1 to 300 people, as is the breakfast buffet and happy hour. I have always found the location to be very accessable to all the sights, shopping and great resturants. Would definately recommend this wonderful Inn to anyone who wants to get a taste of the real Old San Juan.

“Authentic, quirky hotel experience in Old San Juan”

With abundant outdoor space and a house a bit like Miss Havisham's in Great Expectations, the Gallery Inn has to be one of the more unique ways to experience Old San Juan. While the rooms tend to be rather small and filled with the owner's sculpture and paintings, the variety of public spaces including an outdoor pool built into the side of the hotel and a roof top patio with what has to be one of the best views of the city, make this inn a much more personable way to experience Old San Juan. The staff (primarily Jose) are extremely accommodating to your needs and helpful in recommending dinner options. There are a number of live-in parakeets that are quite entertaining as well.

Positives include the prime location atop the highest point in Old San Juan, the nightly wine & cheese hour with excellent toasties, the variety of public spaces to explore and lounge, and Jose at the front desk.

Negatives include the room size, the included breakfast (would have been fine if at a hotel that cost half the price), and the total cost of staying for a weekend in late April.

All in all, if you are going to splurge on one hotel in Old San Juan the Gallery Inn is much more interesting than the generic "just off the cruise ship" hotels that seem to service most of the area so if you are going to pay the same price to stay at the Sheraton you definitely should stay here.

“A delightful experience!!!”

We found The Gallery Inn to be a delightful experience, rather than just a hotel stay.

The hotel is very clean. Our room was cleaned daily, including refreshing of towels, soaps, etc. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The front desk personnel speak English well and are knowledgeable about the area. They provide excellent suggestions and are quite willing to help you with directions. They will recognize you and your room and name.

The breakfast that is included in the room rate is simple, but adequate. The coffee is excellent (and we’re very particular about our coffee!) The breakfast options vary from day to day, as well as from hour to hour. They include orange juice, coffee, bananas, apples, breads, sweets, muffins, butter and a tasty jam. One morning we wanted some muffins, but they were not on the buffet table. We asked and they were happy to make them for us, which took only a little while. The breakfast is self-service. Additional breakfast options are available for a charge.

We stayed in an “Artist Room,” named after the owner’s granddaughter: Jan Marie. It was a good size, with a large closet, a desk and chair, two low chests with two draws each, several mirrors, and a bathroom. The plumbing worked fine and there was plenty of hot water. The shower (no tub) was large and had a “rain head” and a hand-held shower head. A strange aspect of the bathroom is that it is not totally separated from the rest of the room when the door is closed. The bathroom is clearly a separate room, but instead of a traditional door, there are two bi-fold doors and an opening high above them. While the doors closed well, it is not what you would expect, as the bathroom is not fully and tightly enclosed. It was not a problem for us.

The ceiling in our room was very high… possibly 12 feet or more, lending a dramatic sense. There was an air conditioner solely for this room that worked quickly and well. You control this with a remote control.

There are two factors related to this particular room that you should be aware of: (1) There are 21 stairs leading up to this room and then 7 stairs to descend after opening the door to the room to enter. While not a problem for us, someone with limited physical capabilities might want to request a different room, which we assume would not have this feature. (2) The window in the room was certainly not traditional. It was solid wood, not glass, and was topped with a glass semi-circle. It opened into a courtyard.

The hotel interior (including the guest rooms) is wonderfully decorated with the artwork of Jan, an owner. Everywhere you look you’ll find delightful pieces. The architecture is highly interesting. You can wander from room to room, on multiple levels, both inside and out. The pictures on their website give you a feel for this, but the real experience is far better.

Between 6 & 7 PM each evening there is a wine (also hard liquor) and cheese/crackers hour that I recommend you attend. It is a casual gathering of a number of the guests, as well as the owners, Jan and her husband Manuco. It provides a relaxed opportunity to talk to others and learn about their adventures in PR. Jan and Manuco are friendly and respond quite knowledgeably to questions about the area, as well as their hotel. They are both likable characters! The cheese and crackers are free, but there is a modest charge for the drinks (which I recall was somewhere in the range of $5 US per glass.)

The parrots lend a nice exotic touch. While they are free in the general area, they will not approach you, other than to possibly offer a “hello.” If you want, though, the staff will help you to have one perch on your arm and possibly feed them. I did and it was great.

For excellent salads, sandwiches, etc., you should try St. Germain, a bistro & café, which is located only a couple of blocks away on the corner of Cruz and Sol. The atmosphere there was pleasant, the food excellent, and the prices moderate. They serve alcohol.

There are free trolleys that frequently ride around Old San Juan. There is a stop very near The Gallery Inn. You just get on and off the trolleys wherever you like, without the need for a ticket.

We had a great time at The Gallery Inn. It truly is an experience, not a cookie-cutter hotel stay.
