Coqui Inn

I'll be honest with you... upon arriving at our room the first night, I called the travel agency to get a different hotel! The Coqui Inn is actually a set of apartments, and to get to the "front desk" you have to walk down the street. Not the safest thing to do in Puerto Rico at night. We didn't have enough money on our credit card to book another hotel, and we were stuck! My new husband and I made the best of it, and went to the beach a lot. (The beach is across the highway, but there is a walkway above. It's not like you have to dodge traffic or anything). We also took 2 tours, one of the rain forest! After getting over the initial shock of not being in a 4 star hotel, it didn't seem bad at all. There were some cute little restaurants right around the block (oh you have to try the one in the hotel!!! Its expensive, but the BEST oriental food I've EVER had!! I think the point is, we got an affordable stay in Puerto Rico for our honeymoon! Not something every young couple gets to do!

Wow !!!!,, I've never seen a Hotel Owner So Helpful, and So Friendly in any of the places I have stay, when we are out on Vacations.. He work with you to make your stay as pleasant as possible... Keep in mind it is a Budget Hotel, so you can't expect to get all the Amneties from a 5 Start Hotel, But for the price you pay, and The friendliness of their staff, you will feel as if you are in your Home..... Thank you so much For a Job Well Done,,, The Coqui-Inn is Ower Home Away From Home, whenever we visit Puerto Rico... Cordially Yours... David Rivera & William Gonzalez....

“Good Budget Choice - Close to everything I needed.”

Coqui Inn

I was booked at The Mango Inn next door, but since they are closed (becomming an extension of Coqui Inn after renovations) I was moved over to Coqui Inn. They accepted my Orbitz booking with no added charges and gave me a room that was better than I had expected.
Double beds were comfortable, cable TV had all my fav stations and the bathroom was fine. Added bonus was the free WiFi that I didn't expect. I really liked the pool area at Coqui with the snack bar and fun murals that give some personality to the place.
Access to beach, bars, casinos, etc. was easy just across the footbridge. Snacks, soda and beer in the lobby cut the trips across the bridge to a minimum - but there is a burger king right across the footbridge. I also liked the Spanish bakery down the street - although a little expensive for every day. Coqui had coffee and donuts in the morning - so that was fine for me on most days.
I was pleasantly surprised - and I'll be back.

This place is beyond horrible. This place should be shut down and not open to the public. The people that work here or own this place are literally evil. I stayed here for a few days and the first night I was so tired from my trip and walking around the Island that when I got back to the room I just fell on top of the bed and fell asleep. The next day I went to the beach and was gone most of the day. I came back to the room and seen that the maid had been there because the towels were changed. Everytime I would ask at the front desk for towels it was like a big chore. They had to go find a towel to give me and had me wait and wait and wait. Then when they finally gave me some towels they looked very old and worn. The bathroom was rusty and dirty and the maid did not even give a roll of toliet paper. There was only a little roll that was there when I arrived and the holder was broke. The second day I arrived back at the room about 11 pm from being at the beach and shopping, etc. When I got back I opened up the bed to discover stains, sand, and little curly black hairs. There was also what appeared to be a blood stain on the bed. I came out of the room to talk to the front desk person and found him sleeping on the couch in the lobby. I went back into the room and tried to call but there was no answer. I waited a bit and then heard voices in the lobby so I went out to talk to the guy at the desk. I told him that the sheets were filthy and needed to be changed. He responded that there was no maid until 8 am. I told him I would not sleep in a dirty bed. I did not realize the sheets were that dirty because the night before (day of my arrival) I fell asleep on top of the bed because of exhaustion. At first impression the room appeared ok but when I I open the bed to go to sleep it looked like they gave me a dirty room and never changed the sheets from whomever was there before me. The maid just fixed the bed and that's it, but never changed the sheets. The hotel is also crawling with ants. The pool is a joke and the complimentary breakfast is a tiny cup of coffee and a nasty honeybun that is loaded with sugar and fat. They charge over eighty dollars a night when honestly this place should be $20 or better yet not even open to the public.
I have stayed at hotels for 50.00 dollars a night in Hawaii that were fit for a queen compared to this nasty dive. The day I checked out I tried to complain to management and ask for a refund and this guy had the nerve to say that I wanted the bed changed at 3 am. This was such a lie. The night clerk lied to his boss because he knows that I found him sleeping and not doing his job. He wanted to give me the sheets so I could fix the bed. Do you believe the nerve? I am paying over eighty bucks for a roach motel and then they want me to fix the damn nasty beds. I am seriously considering writing to the Puerto Rican health inspection to get over there to shut that nasty place down. They should not be open to the public. This place is not good enough for anyone's dogs.

Management Response
Juan-GM, General Manager
(Management representative)

Before addressing specific issues - I am the manager of Coqui Inn and personally called the police when this guest and her daughter became abusive and destructive in our lobby at checkout time while other guests were there as well. As the police approached, they jumped into a white van and left the premises. It took my employees and myself some time to reinstate the lobby and calm down guests who could not believe the behavior they had just seen.

The reason for this outburst was our refusal to refund her stay after she was at our hotel for two nights - even though we had twice offered her refunds if she would move to another hotel. She refused both refund offers and choose to stay at Coqui Inn rather than move.

This guest booked a $69/night rate, our lowest rate for a budget overnight room. When she checked in she did not like the first room shown her. I personally showed her four different rooms, all of which were rejected. At this point, I offered to refund her money and refer her to another hotel - since it was obvious that she wanted a hotel with more upscale accommodations and facilities. As mentioned in her review, she expected more based on a previous experience in Hawaii. We completely understand that Coqui Inn may not be right for every guest and offer a 'money back guarantee'. If guests are not happy when they arrive at our budget hotel - we will gladly offer a refund and assistance in finding alternate accommodations. This guest decided to accept room #107 rather than the refund.

I personally inspected the room and it was fine and I even authorized an early check-in. I can verify that toilet paper was provided. If additional paper is requested, it is always available at the front desk. If the guest had problems with the bathroom in any manner – I am sure she would said something when I walked her through the room at check-in.
This guest had a full day to speak to me again if she changed her mind.
She stayed the first night with no complaints other than requesting many extra towels for the beach. We request that the hotel towels are not removed from the guest rooms - and never taken across the street to the beach. This is why the front desk clerk was reluctant to provide extra towels since it was made clear they were 'for the beach'. We do sell beach towels and beach towels are also available at the nearby stores.
The guest complains that maid service was not available after 11pm. The front desk acted properly by offering clean sheets at 3 am when she requested maid service. We are a budget hotel and maid service is provided from 8am - 6pm. It is difficult to comment on the photos she posted, since there is no reference point within the frame that shows it is at Coqui Inn - and could have been soiled by either of these guests on the previous days they were in the room. Our policy at Coqui Inn is to retire sheets that cannot be cleaned adequately and remove them from the hotel.
However, no matter what the situation, Coqui Inn never expects a guest to sleep in dirty sheets under any circumstance. Since the hotel was full, this guest could not be moved. The front desk clerk again offered a refund and assistance in moving to another hotel. This offer was rejected again, as well as the clean sheets.
Our two pools have just been refinished and are the largest pools at any budget hotel in San Juan. Our complimentary coffee and pastry selection (including honey buns) are available poolside every morning. We are also one of the most popular 'pet-friendly' hotels in Puerto Rico. We have exterminating services on a regular basis and receive regular inspections by the health department and Puerto Rico Tourism Company. The guest is welcome to contact them for a copy of our most recent report where we received a superlative score in all aspects - especially impressive for a budget hotel.

Coqui Inn is a budget hotel - not an upscale resort at discount prices which this guest seemed to expect.

We found the Mango Inn to be neat and clean. It had a friendly and helpful staff. It had comfortable lobby, courtyards and clean pool. It's in the middle of a nice neighborhood across from the beach. it's also close to good neighborhood shops and restaurants.
