My new wife and I recently got back from our amazing honeymoon and a large part of what made it so amazing was our stay at Eden Rock. We spent 6 days on St. Maarten and then came to St. Barth's for the last 3 days of our honeymoon and we loved every minute of it. Our stay on St. Barth's started with being picked up at the airport by a friendly and knowledgeable driver. We arrived several hours before the official check-in time, but that was no problem. The hotel held our luggage while my wife and I wandered around the St. Jean area and then we relaxed on the beach. The beach is full service and the chairs and towels that they have for you to use are wonderful. St. Jean beach is absolutely fantastic. The sand there is some of the softest that I have ever felt, and I have been to many Caribbean islands. Definitely take a walk up the beach to sit underneath the runway when the planes are taking off and landing. Not quite as exciting as in St. Maarten because there are no large jets, but still quite an experience.
Our suite at the Eden Rock was one of the classic rock suites. It was fantastic. We had a large antique, four-poster bed and antique desk and chairs. We had a fantastic view out over the water and would often sit on our patio and watch the fishermen come and go throughout the day. We received a complimentary champagne welcome. Plus, every night they leave very tasty chocolate treats on your pillow. One night we came back to our room to find it romantically lit with candles and roses on our pillows (I think my wife thought that I had set that up, but it was all the Eden Rock staff).
We spent the majority of our short time on St. Barth's around St. Jean beach and Eden Rock, but we did explore the island and Gustavia. It was definitely the slow season while we were there so Gustavia and its restaurants were nearly empty much of the time. We went to Grand Salines beach one day and I have to say that it was our favorite beach that we went to on our entire honeymoon. That is of course if you like a completely peaceful and idyllic setting with no annoying people trying to hawk you stuff and guys trying to rent chairs and umbrellas from them. It was perfect for two honeymooners, that is for sure.
We ate at the Hideaway, which is near the Eden Rock. You have to love a place who's slogan is "bad food, warm beer, view of the parking lot." It was great. We also had a burger at Le Select, which is supposedly one of the inspirations for Jimmy Buffet's "Cheeseburger in Paradise" (I take that with a grain of salt though). We had our last dinner of the honeymoon at the On the Rocks restaurant at Eden Rock. The view and setting are top-notch and the food was very good, but of course, very expensive.
If there are any negatives, they are ones that are no surprise to most people. Eden Rock, and St. Barth's in general, are extremely expensive and we were there in the off-season. I can't imagine the place during a Christmas/New Year's week. It was tough to get used to a 12 euro (nearly 20 dollar) mojito on the beach at Eden Rock. Additionally, even though nearly everyone we met was extremely nice and courteous, you still are always aware that you are on a French island and the French people generally can have an air of superiority about them that may or may not be real. Still, we have no complaints.
Sorry this review is so long, but we felt like we saw and experienced so much during our short 3 day stay on St. Barth's. We absolutely loved the Eden Rock and loved St. Barth's as well. St. Barth's has just an entirely different feel and charm than any other Caribbean island and we certainly look forward to returning in the not too distant future.
