Only One Negative: If you are looking for an American style resort, with all the necessary bells and whistles, you will be disappointed by the Lighthouse Villas and Cane Garden Bay.
The Positives: This is not an American style resort with all the bells and whistles and it's exactly what I look for when I travel. There are no phones in the room which is awesome. You will be woken up by roosters crowing at 4:30am and you will see lots of dogs, cats and goats running around everywhere. Being located literally just above the main road through CGB, you will hear cars honk their horns as they go around the corner. What some travelers might regard as an annoyance or inconvienece, I find to be part of the local charm. Both the Lighhouse Villas and Cane Garden Bay offer travelers a very nice, clean accommodation on a beautiful, safe beach that offers just enough excitement to keep you entertained during a weeks stay. This is no St. Thomas, St. Martin or St Barts, make no mistake about that. The people are extremely friendly and this is a safe, small community.

This is my third time in CGB and I love it. Most people don't realize that the Lighhouse Villas consist of the main villa building with five units (well six units really, Malcia, the owner lives in one of them) as well as the old family home of the Rymers, which has been converted into lovely apartments. My friends and I were lucky to have rented both a two bedroom, two bath two level unit and an adjacent one bedroom, one bath unit for our party located in the old Rymer family home. The units were spotless and nicely furnished and shared a common balcony with spectacular views. There was a certain Caribbean charm to the apartments that you won't find in the newer villas. Bedrooms are air conditioned and the beds are very comfortable. Housekeeping visits everyday and does a light clean as well as leave you fresh towels (beach towels included!) Malcia is there whenever you need her, just knock on her door. As others have stated, there is a very short, but steep walk up from the beach. But really, unless you are really out of shape, what harm does a short hike to the villas do to you? There is a pretty lounge area by the very small pool with tables, chairs and an BBQ grill. We really wanted to use it, but never found the time.

If you want first class accommodations and amenities, non-stop shopping and fine cusine, you will hate the Lighthouse Villas and CGB. If you want nice clean accommodations in a laid back beach town, then head here. Places like the Lighthouse and CGB are becoming harder and harder to find.

Super great location! We booked this villa based on reviews in Tripadvisor, which is why I am now taking the time to write our review too.
We stayed in the Palm Suite, 2nd floor. Fully equipped, very clean. Amazing views, especially fabulous lounging by the pool and looking out across Cane Garden Bay, St. Thomas and Jost Van Dyke. We had the BBQ, pool and view to ourselves almost daily and for romantic dinners at nite. Malcia is everything as described by others in Tripadvisor: accommodating, soft-spoken and kind.
Her brother Christopher runs the 'fish fry and johnny cake' stand at the bottom of the driveway out of the villa and the johnny cakes ($2 each) are incredible! Fish is fresh caught daily.
We rented a 4x4 car and although the roads are challenging due to the steep uphill climb or downhill roller coaster, we had a blast and were comfortable driving the roads after a few short hours. The hairpin turns were particularly exciting.
Everyone we met was friendly and we felt like we were at home walking the streets and enjoying 'happy hour' at Myetts. We did not find that the beach was busy, except during the fews hours when a cruise ship had arrived elsewhere in Tortola and bused the tourists in to enjoy the beach. That is also when the 'market' comes alive to sell to the cruise ship tourists.
We snorkelled the Cane Garden Bay sunken barge, located to the right of the dinghy dock (which was just being reinforced during our stay). A HUGE barracuda wanders arround the area and we could actually observe him from our villa balcony, as well as snorkelling with him. Lots of fish around the barge.
We had chartered a boat for the two weeks prior to our land stay - our second boat charter in this area, so it was quite interesting and enjoyable to visit on land for a change. Overall, recommend the villa and the BVI's. Including the Sage Mountain hike up to 1710 feet above sea level.

We stayed at the Lighthouse for 2 weeks in March 2009. We were very tired after many months of illness and various family crises and were probably more in need of a restful and recuperating break than we had ever been. It was our first holiday without any children for over 30 years and our wedding anniversary as well. Though we were not particularly looking for a romantic setting, we really couldn’t have found a more perfect one.
Malcia was warm and welcoming from the moment we arrived (from before really as we missed our flight to Beef Island and had to spend the first night on Antigua where we phoned Malcia to say we would be a day late). She did all she could to accommodate our various requests; she gave us lots of directions and suggestions, arranged for us to hire an excellent car from ‘Denzel’, did all she could to keep the Inet connection open which was a bit precarious at times, and was generally on hand whenever we needed anything.
Our apartment was extremely comfortable and pretty well had everything we required. We hardly used the AC but it was more than adequate when we did need it. We spent loads of time on the balcony just wallowing in the beautiful views. Ours was not the best view at the lighthouse, only because it was obstructed by some trees so we had to look to each side. This wasn’t really a great hardship and was more than made up by the apartment being so nice. Especially the 2 sofas (one each, what luxury!) The housekeeping service was excellent and we had so many beach towels (clean ones everyday) that they made quite a pile when I gathered them all up before we left. I do love having lots of towels though. There is a small deck at one side of the main building with a plunge (cooling-off pool) and more fabulous views. We watched the best sunsets from there and by the end of our stay it was the only place be could get an Inet signal.
Cane Garden Bay is beautiful and the Lighthouse is ideally situated right in the middle. Quito’s bar and restaurant is just below the Lighthouse and we ate our best meals there. Sometimes we just went over to sip excellent pina-coladas and listen to the equally excellent music. I have played the CD I brought back so many times it is almost worn out. The music from the bar didn’t really bother us, if we weren’t actually in the bar we would lie on our respective sofas and just let it drift up. One night there was a band or disco that played very late into the early hours, but it only happened once. We were on holiday and had plenty of time to catch up on sleep. What was far more noisy were the cockerels, who start their day at about 4 a.m. I don’t think there is anywhere on the BVI where you can evade them.
Also just below the Lighthouse is Christopher’s booth where you can buy delicious fried fish and Johnny cakes if you get there in time, though Christopher’s wife will always put some by for you if you let her know.
No where on Tortola seemed overly busy when we were there, however, CGB is a bit busier than some of the more deserted bays/beaches – which still doesn’t constitute busy in my book – more “interesting” and offering opportunities to watch the world go by. When the cruise ships come into Road Town the local taxi minibuses bring people over the island to enjoy CGB so the beach gets quite busy; but certainly short of crowded and of course so do the bars and restaurants. It is easy just to go somewhere else on those days (we bought a local paper when we arrived with the cruise ship timetable in it) or just chill out on your balcony at the Lighthouse, which is definitely one of the best places in CGB to be. The views are wonderful, and though we certainly didn’t have the best of the Lighthouse views we spent loads of time just sitting on our balcony. The sunsets give a whole new meaning to enjoying a Run (from the distillery just along the road – that is to say easy walking distance) and Coke sundowners. It is best to be off the beach at the end of the day as the ‘no see ‘ems’ are out in full biting force then. My poor husband got horribly bitten all through the holiday so next time we are going to take what ever precautions we can beforehand and be more careful to plaster ourselves with repellent everyday. I swam several times a day so I think that may have kept the bites I got more at bay. Sometimes I walked to the far end of the beach where it was quiet or sometimes I just popped down and swam off the jetty at the bottom of the drive (short but steep). The swimming everywhere (I tried) is glorious – real tropical island stuff. There always seems to be a bar or restaurant (some of them very makeshift) just when and where you need them and nobody hassles you. Rather, we got warm and welcoming service everywhere we went. Well with one exception – we went to Jost Van Dyke one Sunday on the ferry and were turned away from the first bar/restaurant we went to when we tried to order coffee. The American (or he could have been Canadian) proprietor relayed messages to us via a very embarrassed waitress to the effect that as it was the end of the season there was no food or coffee left, despite the other couple who were sitting at a table obviously enjoying breakfast! We were a little surprised but quickly moved on to the next bar where we were well and truly warmly welcomed and bought as much hot coffee as we could want. We also ate later in the day at Foxies where we had the best burgers ever. The best thing about our visit to GvD though was the huge welcome we got when we joined the small congregation at the very picturesque Methodist Church for Sunday worship. This was a very special part of or holiday and we are extremely grateful to the congregation, preacher, choir, band and Sunday school for making it so.
I could go on for ever about our lovely holiday on the BVI but I think one of the very best things was just discovering so much for ourselves and having so many helpful and friendly people on hand just to help us along the way. Thank you all so much.

My husband and I traveled to the British Virgin Islands with another couple the first week of April. We had such a wonderful time, I don't know where to begin. The Lighthouse Villas are absolutely wonderful. Beautiful views of Cane Garden Bay and the sunsets. Malcia is a wonderful hostest. The villas are very clean and well maintained. The location could not be better. It is literally a 2 minute walk to great food and the beautiful beaches on Cane Garden Bay. Myetts, Quitos and Elm Street all had delicious food. Make sure you hear Quito play with his band and alone. He's great. Also, his brother Christopher runs a little stand right below the Lighthouse Villas. He and his wife make Johnny Cakes, fish and chicken. Give them a try. Tell them Dr. Phil, The Candyman, TV Sharon and Tracy sent you. We rented a car for a day and toured Tortola. Brewer's Bay is beautiful as is Smuggler's Cove. We took the ferry over to Virgin Gorda to tour the Bath's. They are just as pretty as they look in pictures. If you go, you might pack a small cooler with water or other refreshments, because you can't get anything to drink once you walk down to the Bath's. When you're done, have a meal at Top Of The Bath's. Good food, even better views. We also did a day sail to The Indians and Norman Island. We wen with Mystique tours and they did a great job. Nicki makes a better painkiller than the Soggy Dollar Bar. The snorkeling that day was awesome. I saw a nurse shark and lots of pretty tropical fish. We also went to Jost Van Dyke for a day. For that we rented a boat. If you go, check out Sydney's Peace and Love Bar. It's an honor bar and you really do serve yourself. Also Foxy's and of course the Soggy Dollar Bar.

I could go on and on about this vacation. It was wonderful in every way. At the start of the week you will be guests, by the time you leave you will be a part of the family. If anyone has any questions, I would be happy to answer them. You can not go wrong with a trip to Lighthouse Villas or the British Vrigin Islands.

We travel extensively and this was one of our best vacations. The Lighthouse Villas are perfect. After arriving from Puerto Rico via Cape Air we rented a car at the airport. The drive to Cane Garden Bay was about 40 minutes, roads are not as bad as people say. We had Villa #5, a lovely penthouse unit with a spectacular view of Cane Garden Bay with Jost Van Dyke and St. Thomas in the background. The villas are immaculate, simply furnished with white wicker furniture, table and chairs in the kitchen, sitting area, spectacular balcony with chairs and a table. There was a comfortable king size bed in the main room and another king in the separate bedroom, both have high quality linens. The kitchen has a small gas stove, fridge, microwave, blender, toaster, coffee maker and other kitchen essentials. Bobby's Supermarket is a 2 minute walk down the road, with wine, beer, liquor and a good selection of groceries. We had breakfasts in the villa , at the end of the dock there is a booth that sells great Johney Cakes which we enjoyed two mornings . The bathroom has a large walk in shower, water pressure was great, Malcia provides shampoo, conditioner, body lotion, and hair dryers. The villa has two air conditioners and ceiling fans, we only used the air at night. There is a small pool located in an area with a waterfall, Weber BBQ, lovely patio furniture, gardens and an honour bar. The beach is across the road, on the right of the dock. The beach was deserted except for one busy cruise ship day. Malcia has chairs on the beach for her guests. There was good snorkelling, from the beach, go right about 100 yards go in where the rocks begin. Fantastic restaurants, bars, entertainment are on Cane Garden Bay. We had a car so we toured the Island and visited numerous outstanding beaches. However best part was sitting on the balcony at LHV and enjoying the views. Gracious hostess, lovely accommodations, beautiful island.
