We just arrived back from Tortola and did a daytrip to Virgin Gorda through one of the Ferry services out of Roadtown. You access the beach via a gradually declining path with man-made "steps" built into the hillside. Allow about 10 minutes to down the hillside and a little longer going up. The Baths were breathtakingly beautiful, but the water was extrememly choppy and breaking roughly around the boulders -somewhat intimidating for those who might not be assured of themselves in the water. We managed to squeeze in some snorkling and saw some interesting fish, but I imagine it could be a whole lot better on a calm day. We were also there later in the afternoon, so the tide was probably coming in. As we arrived many of the people were leaving, but I can see how this beautiful (but small) cove could get very crowded, very quickly. The nimble-footed can crawl across the rocks and through grottoes to the nearby beaches to escape the tourists. There are bathrooms, coin-operated lockers near the beach and a restaurant called, appropriately enough, the Top of the Baths at the top of the hill. They have a bar/restaurant/patio with panoramic views and a pool for patrons to use. It was well worth the journey.
Don't miss The Baths! We took a speed boat trip from St. Thomas and part of the trip included a tour of The Baths. It was wonderful! The granite formations were spectacular and the beach area was awesome. It is definitely worth a trip if you are staying anywhere near the Virgin Islands. The snorkeling was also fantastic from Marina Cay and White Bay was beautiful. We are already planning a trip back next year to see more of what we missed.
What can I say. Absolutely beautiful! The seas were rough the day we visited, the sights, the sound of the waves pounding the rocks even better! Looks like an awesome place to snorkel. Several small crabs, along with abundance of sea life in and around the boulders. If you enjoy turquoise water, and CLEAN beaches, visit here.
We booked this from the island of St. Thomas with Limnos Tours. I HIGHLY recommend them. Well worth the money. I paid $85 per person, plus $20 for customs fee. This included lunch, and an open bar. Well guided, lots of pirate stories, and an additional stop at Norman Island (Off the coast of St. John) to snorkel. Be sure to visit the bar/grill at the entrance of the Baths. Buy a drink or an item at the gift shop (CUBAN CIGARS!), and you are allowed to use the pool. Devil's Bay Trail takes you to the cave, and by Neptune's hideout. Email me if you would like pictures or have any questions. THIS IS A MUST SEE! Enjoy!
My husband and I were in Virgin Gorda in May for 3 weeks. Neither of us had been there before, and we enjoyed every minute. The Baths were spectacular...pristine, clear water, and powdery beaches. The caves were so awesome.
We plan to return next year, as my husband has family there, so we don't have to worry about accommodations.
The only drawback for us is the US currency...gets costly with our Canadian dollar.
