“The Good, The Bad, and the Worse”

Treasure Island Resort

Reading the recent reviews of TI, I'm not surprised to hear that the resort has fallen on hard times. When my husband and I stayed there (my husband was attracted to the PADI dive facility on property) problems started at check in and continued until our departure.

First the GOOD:
1. I was there with my hubby, and we always make the best of every situation.
2. Food was ok
3. The weather was fab
4. The diving was lovely

The BAD (and WORSE)
1. Check in took 2.5 hours. No one manned the front desk. No bartender at the lobby bar to hook us up with a cocktail while we waited and waited and waited.
2. Partial ocean view room - HA! I stood on a chair on our balcony and was able to discern the slightest sliver of ocean in the distance. Don't bother spending any extra cash.
3. Maid service - room was unmade for days in a row, no clean towels without multiple phone calls to housekeeping.
4. First glimpse of the room: broken lamp in room, avocado green bathtub CRAWLING with ants (no hot water either, I should add), overpowering smell of mold/mildew.
5. Disappointing beaches, rocky, nearly non-existent.
6. Hotel "shops" were never open.
7. remote location at the end of 7 mile beach - without a car, you're stranded to walking distance.

Hope this helps. We would not stay here again. We are usually W or Westin regulars...nice upper middle of the road hotels. TI is NOT a nice resort. Its cheap and it will sour your view of Cayman. And that's a darn shame.

We had a ball there--the place was wonderful. Staff was great. Loved the pools and the bars. Close to everything. Loved Grand Cayman--expensive but great. Stingray City a WOW.
Wanted to go back for the Christmas Holidays..:(--Hurricane damage too bad won't take reservations until March.. and I'm booked into Cancun in April--maybe next yr.

We stayed at the Treasure Island several years ago and hope it is still intact following hurricane Ivan. Anyone know? We arrived to live steel drum music in the lobby. The rooms aren't fancy or luxurious but they have a refrigerator and the air conditioner worked well and it was clean. (You get what you pay for there.) The thing about this property that I loved was the easy access to the beach for snorkeling with an amazing reef right in front of the property, and the 2 incredible swimming pools, one with a swim up bar and waterfalls and food in the bar which is ery good with friendly staff. My friend and I had a blast at this property and enjoyed partying with other tourists and the british locals, even though it was rather uncrowded compared to other destinations. Night life is rather slim in the Caymens as this is primarily a dive destination. Nothing stellar about the rooms but I will never forget the pool or the snorkeling accessibility. There is a dive shop located in the hotel too if you want to become certified, and there is an awesome local boat called Captain Dexters snorkeling tours which will take you out to swim with the sting rays at sting ray city. Highly recommended and he picks you up at the hotel.

“only so-so”

Our family vacationed 8/21-28 at Treasure Island. We found our 1st room not to our handicapped-accessable specifications (5th floor, closest elevator broken, necessitating using one far to the rear or the building and negotiating smelly hallways over-looking the service areas of the hotel that no guest should ever be privy to!) and ant-ridden. After 1 night, we were able to be relocated to another room in other wing with a working elevator and no ants. Room was clean, well-equipped, and staff friendly. The "full-service" tour desk was only manned for a couple of hours in the morning, and the little attached shopping mall consisted mostly of empty storefronts (disappointing to a wheelchair-bound mother who planned to spend time browsing while her family enjoyed more athletic pursuits).
Try Coconut Joes (just a short walk down the street) for dinner & drinks if you are staying here!
[P.S. as Hurricane Ivan approaches, I hope all will be well here, as it really was a very lovely vacation! God bless!]

“Slightly below average”

We've stayed twice prior and this hotel has trended downward. The other reviews that comment on towel shortages and unconcerned hotel staff are accurate. We received towels after they were able to collect some and clean them but we were never out of towels completely. The maid service was excellent, however the check-in staff could use some help... there was one girl checking in a line of 4 parties, while 3 other people just sat in the back room and chatted.

This trip, the pool seemed unclean and the bar emmited an order that was absolutly gross. It smelled like the basement of a frat. house with years of spilled booze. The garbage seemed like it hadn't been taken out for days.

Considering we paid about $900/person for Thurs. to Thurs. (airfare & hotel combined) this was a bargain. I checked the airfare prior to departure and it was running about $600. This means we got the rooms for about $43/night; I mean come-on what do you want for that price!

As for meals, you must eat lunch at CIMBOCO's! The staff was very friendly and the meals were outstanding. Try the brechette' (spell?) - very fresh and they cook all of the meals in an open fire oven.

The Warf should not be missed for its romantic ambiance and the Lobster Pot offers the best seafood trio and steaks on the island.

Stay away from Lone Star unless you like getting eaten by mosquitos at 7pm or consumed by smoke inside.

In summary, the island is fantastic and has so much to offer you won't see it in a week. Get a car, tour the island and don't miss Stingray City. We'll be back!
