This was our 3rd visit to Cayman and to 7-mile beach and by far PLANTANA has the best location of anywhere we have stayed before (Hyatt Hotel and Cayman Reef Condos). Since Hurrican Ivan demolished a lot of the island, we found that the larger hotels & condo buildings have been taking over the once relatively modest and quiet stretch of 7M beach (does not look like it did 8 yrs ago when we last visited).
LOCATION. Plantana, however is just north of the Westin and the Ritz Carlton and their hoards of people. The stretch of beach in front of Plantana is for the use of guests only and when we were there it was very quiet (the perfect time to go is the shoulder season - after the masses leave and before the humidity and rainy season takes grip ). The more south you go on 7MB the more people you will encounter and the beach closest to Georgetown is slightly more rocky and not as sandy and beautiful.
CONDO. We rented one of the individually owned 2 bd oceanfront condos. The view was very nice as the screened patio/balcony overlooked the gardens, pool and beyond that the crystal clear Caribbean waters.
The maid service every day was huge plus and the staff at the office were very friendly and helpful. The grounds and pool were daily maintained and everything was very clean.
We dont have children but several of the units had young children and the Plantana was perfect for them and yet they did not bother us as the beach front area is wide and perfect to escape kids playing in the pool. There are shade trees and also umbrellas on the beach and very nice padded chaises at the pool.
BEACH - is gorgeous white coral sand and water is crystal clear aqua green. There are a few small coral clusters within easy swimming distance (about 5 mins with fins on) just out front and to the south of the Plantana - good for snorkelling - lots of life, large variety and quantity of fish + a huge Lobster lives there too. We saw Stingrays in the shallows when we were going in and out of the water - so dont forget to shuffle your feet as you walk in. Also saw a lone Barracuda, but he steered clear of us swimming.
DIVING - we forewent our usual Red Sail sports dive crew and went with a company our resident friend recommended - Dive 'n' Stuff - this was one of the best choices we made. They were on time every day and picked us up from the beach in front of Plantana. We loved that this was not a "cattle car" but a small dive boat 3 crew and us 3 divers - not bad !!! 2 tank dive =$100 USD. Highly recommend. Also check out Cobalt Coast/Dive Tech for shore diving off the North side (west end) of the island, they were very cost effective.
RESTAURANTS are expensive but for dinner we recommend The Bed, Deckers, Calypso Grill. Steer clear of Coconut Joes (their food is a joke / nasty) for a cost effective casual dinner go to the Lone Star and for breakfast/lunch Eats is within walking distance of Plantana. Chicken Chicken is just a short drive down the road - great for jerk chicken lunch with trimmings and Mezza is must do for a smart lunch (popular with prof locals) food is excellent.
TIPS. Only go to Georgetown when there are no cruise ships docked - the town is a zoo when they off load thousands of people. Renting a car is an advantage. Cost was $390 total for 10days, but you can rent for a few days to save $$. Sundays - all shops closed, most restaurants open.
For the price it's much better value than a hotel and you have the luxury of stocking the kitchen with coffee, breakfast & snacks, drinks (cocktails at sunset or a late night swim with a glass of ????).
Highly recommend Plantana for location, quality and value.
