Well where do I start....Just got back from a fabulous week at this hotel. Let me start with the hotel itself. If you want 5 star luxury DONT go there. The rooms are basic, and the bathrooms are in need of refurb. Salmon pink fittings went out with the ark! They are chipped and the taps are so old that they creak when you turn them on. Having said that, the room was kept very clean, was large and had all that was necessary, so as you don't stay in the room all day, it was fine. The food, though not huge in choice, was for us, a highlight, as everything was cooked beautifully, was plentiful and always served with a smile. The hotel staff were a pleasure, with not one that was ever offhand or non attentive - in fact everyone that we came in contact with on the island was the same.As other reviewers have said - if you want noise, brash and often rude then go to the Marriott next door and pay the price. The Marriott was fine for an evenings amusement in the casino, but if you want informal, quiet and relaxed (and much much cheaper) go to Sugar Bay. We stayed at end of February, so was probably quieter than usual, but remember for all you younger generation, that SAGA use this hotel, so happening it aint!! However if you are like us, just want peace and quiet and no horrible screaming kids, no blaring music all day then this is PERFECT. There are very few "sights" on the island, but the little scenic train trip around the island is a must, if only to hear the narrative from the bus driver on the way back pointing out highlights such as the police station, the town hall and a large supermarket! Poor chap - he really was struggling for "highlights" Nevertheless, having visited quite a few islands in the Caribbean, I believe this is one of the prettiest. What also made it so much fun were the other guests - some were hilarious, and kept my husband and I in fits. So thank you to the Miss Marple look a like, with meek husband dutifully following behind at 5 paces (or losing himself - perhaps on purpose?) which meant that Miss Marple spent alot of time trudging around asking everyone if they had seen "him"! Thank you to the Welsh client, who perhaps was deaf, because he never spoke unless it was at 50 decibals. Thank you to the group of 10 Canadians? that thought it was obviously necessary to consult on their wardrobe every night, so they all turned up in matching tee shirts each day (perhaps it was so they didn't lose each other) You all were the entertainment unknowingly, but for us helped this holiday to be wonderfully unforgettable!
What for us brits was the biggest pain of all was EXCEL.COM. You fly direct to St Kitts which is fine albeit the plane was delayed there and back. However on the way back you take off, land in Antigua, spend an hour going through security yet again, hanging around until the plane is cleaned refuelled and has all the Antigua passengers on board. Not what you really want at the end of a holiday. Still you learn by experience, and my advice is pay the extra and go VIRGIN. Come to think of it, ANYTHING but EXCEL. We have stayed on many of the Caribbean islands some more than once, and this is definitely one I can recommend for those who want a relaxed, informal non touristy experience. The free entertainment is pot luck!!
