“Fabulous 25th Wedding Anniversary Trip”

My wife and I recently stayed at the Montpelier Plantation Inn for the celebration of our 25th wedding anniversary. She always likes to do things like cruises or beach resorts, whereas I usually prefer the types of vacations where there is history, golfing, hiking, that sort of thing. Initially I was pushing to go to Rhode Island and stay at one of our favorite B&Bs there, but she talked me into springing the extra money and going to Nevis. When we got there, I was pleasantly surprised. The place was absolutely gorgeous, and the rooms were to die for. Clean, crisp, and lacking televisions and children. Perfect. The staff was efficient and friendly, and gave us drinks and a tour of the property our first day. By the end of the first day everyone was on a first name basis, and that was amazing. These people have hundreds of guests come through a month, I am sure, and they made us feel like we were the most important people there. We enjoyed a lot of the things the inn had to offer, including massages in our rooms, a fantastic breakfast daily which was enough food to last us until suppertime, and the pool area was always a treat, and never crowded, and of course I golfed and enjoyed the wonderful people, history, and culture on the Island. I am not really a beach person, but the private beach they have was great. We ate at the resort all 5 nights, because I was so impressed after the first dinner there that I didn’t want to risk going elsewhere and being disappointed. We did venture out for lunch at a nearby restaurant two of the days, and the food was good, but couldn’t hold a candle to the gourmet meals we enjoyed nightly. Overall, the staff, the grounds, the food, the ambiance, the rooms, the pool, the beach, and every single other aspect of the resort was top notch in my book, and I am very thankful my wife found a place where both of us could enjoy things we loved doing on such a special occasion. My wife has already stated she wants to spend our 50th anniversary there as well, but I am certain we will not be waiting another 25 years to return to this dynamite destination.

“Fantastic Honeymoon Experience”

Montpelier Plantation Inn

After much deliberation and research, my new husband and I decided to spend our honeymoon at the Montpelier Plantation Inn, and I must say we couldn't have chosen a better destination!

The room was exquisite, and the staff was very friendly without being aggressive. We started each day out with a wonderful English style breakfast, and then it was off to the daily activities.

We chose the package with the horseback ride along the beach and around the island, and it was very romantic. The private beach at the resort was beautiful and secluded, and the snorkeling was amazing. We enjoyed a private picnic on the beach with all of the food and wine provided. What a treat!

The island is gorgeous, and we chose to do a leisurely hike through the rainforest. The botanical gardens were full of lush beautiful plants and flowers (which made for wonderful pictures). My husband played golf one day while I enjoyed a massage and he said the course was fantastic, and he could see the ruins and the sea and he had a great time.

Dinner each night was amazing. The different dining areas gave you a variety of options for different settings, (our favorite was the Mill Restaurant) and the menus had a wide selection so even though you were dining in the same general area, you didn't feel limited. And the food was spectacular.

We could not have chosen a better place to start our new lives together, and we will be going back every opportunity we get. Kudos to the resort for making my honeymoon the most memorable and romantic experience anyone could ask for.

“Disappointing Dinner Guests”

Montpelier Plantation Inn

After reading rave reviews about the Montpelier Plantation Inn we made it a priority to have dinner there on our recent trip to Nevis while visiting friends. Reservations were made weeks ahead to ensure we were able to dine in the Sugar Mill (the reason we wanted to visit).

The Inn is beautifully appointed with gorgeous furniture and two adorable and well-behaved dogs. Cocktail hour was nicely done as well.

The problem started when we were about to be led to our seats....in the opposite direction of the Sugar Mill. When asked, our waitress said that we were to be seated on the terrace, not in the Mill. After much back and forth we were comped our wine, but still left disappointed that our reservation was not honored. As it turned out a larger party was seated in the Mill (7), but management clearly did not thing a party of 4 could also fit, even though it sits 12.

The terrace was okay, but didn't have the abience that I had hoped for. It was our final night, and a treat to our hosts, so we did not want to leave after realizing we could not be seated according to our reservation.

To add to the disappointment, later in the night one of our party got sick to his stomach and was up all night with food poisoning symptoms. Since this was our only meal out for the day, we can only guess that it was something from dinner.

In all a disappointing and expensive visit. We would go back for drinks, but dine elsewhere.

We stayed at the Montpelier for several days in August 2006.

Overall the property was superb. It's in the middle of nowhere and very much feels like the end of the earth.

Which is a good thing.

The grounds are delightful, with Nevis Peak towering above, and lawns dropping down towards the Caribbean offering some stunning sunsets. The pool is a good size, the mill a lovely quirky feature and the main property sympathetically restored.

The rooms are nice and bright and clean, with great beds and small private terraces out the back. The bathrooms are starting to feel a little tired, but we didn't spend a great deal of time in the room so it didn't bother us hugely.

Breakfast was huge (no need for lunch), and the complimentary afternoon tea and scones were a must.

The private beach was a bonus, but a little disappointing. It has good views of St Kitts, but is more grass than beach and not particularly inviting. Having said that the day we went there was a bit choppy and we had come from Antigua, where even the municipal beaches are unbelievable. So we prefered to stay by the pool.

For animal lovers the inn has a couple of friendly labradors, and look out for the huge family of donkeys on the roads down to Charlestown.

On the downside (and it's a minor downside) was dinner. The food was good, but the prices are high. It attracts a lot of the moneyed clientele from the Four Seasons, and felt a bit like we were gate-crashers at a dinner party in the Hamptons. Being neither American nor middle-aged we felt a little looked down upon.

We also didn't find the owners as welcoming as many others here have, but perhaps we were unlucky. The staff, however, couldn't have been nicer. All were very friendly and knew our names, and nothing was too much trouble.

As for dinner, there were a few other places to check out. Special mention to Double Deuce on the beach outside Charlestown - small and very relaxed with a beach-bar vibe, but with superior food, and Bananas - a very good restaurant in the Hamilton estate on the slopes of Nevis Peak.

The hotel's website has some great offers, and we would very much recommend the Montpelier to people thinking about coming to Nevis looking for a unique and personal stay.

My wife and I had a fantastic getaway at Montpelier last month. The resort is so special and the owners and staff were very friendly and accommodating. The restaurant was great and the wine cellar had everything you could want. We came home relaxed and re-energized and we are planning to go back again next year!
