“Great Low Risk Family Vacation”

Four Seasons Resort Nevis, West Indies

2 May 2008
4/5 found this review helpful

My family was looking for a no-risk carribean vacation for the our kids spring break. After looking at lots of reviews, we decided to spend a little extra and go with the brand we trusted. We weren't disappointed. We are an active family of 5 - kids ages 8, 6, 4. We booked a villa after reading about it on tripadvisor. It was much better than two connecting hotel rooms. We had 2 bedrooms, a full kitchen and living room, washer and dryer (really used them), a huge outside screened in porch that was like another living area and my kids favorite, the plunge pool.

The staff and facilities were what you would expect from a four seasons. The food was good, not great. We purchased the breakfast plan before going, which was a mistake. We could have bought our breakfast buffets each day for less than the breakfast plan. We used much of the provided non-motorized equipment -- the boogie boards, hobie cats, sand toys etc... All was in good condition.

My kids loved hte monkey excursion with Lemmie. You climb up to an old ruined sugar mill, and see tons of monkeys in their natural environment. Lemmie has made friends with a whole troop of them that allows you to get real close. That was truly a unique experience.

Overall, great experience. I imagine we could have had as good an experience somewhere else for less, but with four seasons, we knew we weren't risking it. Bring lots of US dollars - hard to get them on the island and everything is priced US.

I just stayed at the Four Seasons at Nevis and had a great time. The staff was professional and helpful, the hotel was clean, the food was good and the overall service was excellent. I would suggest to honeymooners. There were a lot of families with children there, but I did not seem overwhelmed with the number of children, which was nice.

“Poor value, inconsistent service, way below par for 4 Seasons”

We had a poor experience at this property. It definitely does not live up to standards set for the 4 seasons at other sites.

Service was incredibly inconsistent. We frequently felt like we were imposing when we asked for anything. Poolside service was poor. They came around and gave us some little freebies now and again, but when it came to ordering food or drinks, we were practically ignored. Pool attendants would often be chatting or hanging out rather than looking out for needy guests.

The room was very nice, but the property is quite dated, and we get the impression it's relying on exclusivity and reputation, rather than an actual quality resort. The layout is a little bizzare, reflecting the fact that this property was probably purchased by the 4 seasons rather than developed by them.

The on site food was a mixed bag. We had some good meals and some really mediocre ones, including our meal at the signature dining restaurant. Neve was incredibly mediocre. The breakfast buffet is large, but not a particularly good value. Prices for food were typical overpriced Carribean fare (I understand that's a mix of costs and profits, probably more profit than cost).

The conceirge was good, not excellent, and interaction with staff was often awkward. I get this feeling like they had something to prove much of the time. They seemed to spend alot of time in our room cleaning, despite the fact that room service could be inconsistent on the detail level.

This place is a poor value. I can handle throwing away money on an overpriced vacation if the value is there, but that is far from the case. I thought this would be a no brainer as far as the service and resort goes, but I was definitely wrong. Every hour of every day I spent there I was confronted by the poor management and limited commitment of the property. There were some nice touches, but that's almost a requirement at this price point. Those couldn't make up for the aloof noncommital staff.

Nevis is an incredible island, a really spectacular tropical mountain exploding from the Carribean. The 4 Seasons may be the nicest resort on the island. I guess that means I'm not returning to Nevis any time soon.

We had a superb stay at the FS Nevis. We had conjoining rooms to accommodate our daughters and both were beautifully appointed. We went with a group of 6 other couples and we all had a great time; the men enjoyed the golf, the ladies loved the spa and, we all loved the convenience of dropping our kids at the kids club (and them choosing to go there rather than join us at the pool!!!) The hotel was very willing to assist us with all our childrens needs including a sterilizer and kettle to make baby bottles, and baby-sitting. The grounds are beautiful and the food was good. In some areas, the service could have been better but we have got used to lowering our standards slightly when we travel within the Caribbean. Overall highly recommended.

“Lost some spark for couples without kids”

My husband and I just returned from our annual "leave the kids behind for a week" vacation at the Four Seasons. This was our third trip (the others 5 and 11 years ago). We are very sad to say the hotel has lost some of its spark. We have been HUGE fans of the Four Seasons, and especially Nevis until this trip.

As much as we love our own kids, this is our once a year trip, and the resort has become a kid fest. We were one of the few people there without kids. The beach is crowed with kids from babies to teens, kid activites, kid equipment, etc. It's loud and I felt like I was on a beach at home.

TO THE RESORT'S CREDIT, they have created an "adult only" pool at the far end, which was FABULOUS. Had it not been for this pool, called the "reflection pool", we would not have been happy at all. The service at the reflection pool was spectacular (and we are VERY picky on beach service)! They had our chairs set up every morning (and reserve them for you for the entire length of your stay), and came around more frequently than any resort I've experienced, and we've been to quite a number of the Caribbean's best. That was the best part of the whole trip. If you are going as a couple, I highly recommend that you request a room near the Reflection Pool and NOT the other end of the beach.

The rooms are still nice, but as some reviewers noted, the bathrooms are getting a bit outdated (single showers, single bathtubs). Maid and turndown service was prompt and very good. That said my husband had a watch and t-shirt disappear. I'm hoping they got swept up in towels and weren't deliberately stolen.

The food and restaurant ambiance have taken a downturn, too, from what I would have called 5 start restaurant quality in the main dining room in the past to just good food now. With the main dining room often crowed with kids, that impacted our experience as well. The wine list has taken a HUGE downturn - there wasn't a single white burgundy on the list... in years past there was an entire page. It's been replaced with California Chardonnays. Sorry, but for my once a year vaca with just the hubby, I want a good Puligny Montrachet. They have added a newer casual restaurant called Mangos which is a good bargain - casual but great food and fun. It's also great (but somewhat limited menu and a bit slow) for lunch.

Our restauarant reservations were taken care of promptly, however, they don't send the "reminder/confirmation" notices to the room with the location and time of your dinner like they used to.

Tennis services were great - the Pros are fantastic and fun. I recommend the weekly mixer - great fun.

Spa services were quite good, too. Great deep tissue massage.

We sat on the beach until dusk to enjoy the fantastic sunset views - very hard to top!

I loved this place in the past for couples, but much less so now. I will say that we went during a VERY heavy spring break week for schools, so I'm not sure the kid issue is so bad at other times of the year. That said, If you're looking for a special romantic gettaway, I think I'd probably try others places.....
