I was visiting T&T recently for a wedding in Tobago. Coming from Texas, there was no flight that will get me to Tobago on the same day. My airlines will only get me as far as Trinidad with not enough time to make the last flight to Tobago. This required that I stay overnight before taking a Caribbean airline flight out to Tobago the next day. The Palms Hotel is located within 5-10 min from the airport, which makes it a reasonable choice for this purpose. I was originally looking to book the Holiday Inn Express for the good reviews on Trip Advisor. However it was booked for the night. They suggested I check with Palms and I did. Here is my review:
Location - if you want to stay near the airport, this is perfect for that. If you are looking for tourist attractions, I'd look closer to town in Port of Spain, or other parts of Trinidad. The street where the hotel is located was fine, several restaurants and small stores within short distance of walk.
Hotel grounds - the grounds were fine. you can see the effort they put into the hotel to try to make it nice. there is a courtyard area with some flowers etc. and the other side has some chairs etc. for relaxing outside. it's reasonably clean and there are gates and surveilance cameras to keep out the unwanted people who are not guests there.
Room - the room is fine. Everythng is generally clean and well maintained. All the furnishing and appliances etc. are pretty updated and new. The floor is not carpet so there is less allergy issues and easier to clean. When I first checked in, there was a strong chemical smell, likely from the bleach used to clean the floor and bathroom. It went away eventually several hours later (or I just got used to it and forget about it). The lighting in the room wasn't the most cheerful or warm, feels a little "cheap" because of the lighting even with the nice furniture. The bed was reasonably comfortable. The blanket /bed cover included was VERY thin however. I had to request for another one from the maid. The AC in the room was good, comes with remote for good control. TV was fine, come with standard cable stations from the U.S. Room also has a mini fridge which was nice. Bathroom was fine. Comes with all the standards, like a hairdryer. However there was no shampoo and conditioner bottles. I found out late at night and too late to leave the room to ask the office whether they have any. Luckly I found some travel size bottles I took from previous travels. Phone needed to be turned on by the office if you intend to make any outside calls.
There was no alarm clock in the room. I tried to call the office to arrange for wake up call but when I dialed zero it did not connect to the office and there was no instructions anywhere on how to dial the office.
Breakfast - not much of anything at all. There were a few small plastic packaged muffins near the microwave in the "dining area" and that's about it. I checked the large fridge next to it and there was no juice, milk or anything else. I needed to head to the airport so I just grabbed a muffin and left.
Internet - there is free wireless internet at the hotel which was nice. Although in my room (first floor) the signal was very weak and spotty but I got by.
Staff - nothing to rave about, it was satisfactory. They were not rude or anything and did their job as required.
Tip - If you are coming from the airport, instead of hiring a taxi waiting by the airport, call the hotel and have them send a taxi to pick you up at the airport. It's about $10 USD or $600 TT this way, other wise it's about $17-$20 USD.
Overall, I would rate this as a high 2 1/2 star hotel based on most US/International hotel standards. It was clean, safe, convenient, your basic no frills hotel, reasonable for business travelers or people transiting to Tobago.
