“Quite decent”

Arthur's by the Sea

4 Sep 2007

Despite reading some pretty bad reviews about Arthur's, I went based on a friend's sister's experience of the place which was not bad, plus the price which seemed reasonable compared to other Tobago hotels.

I found the room to be of a good standard - clean, a/c, hot and cold water, daily maid service, parking. The pool was a bit small but conveniently located and, as the place was mostly empty when we went, this suited us just fine. With a bigger crowd, it would have been quite crowded in it! Unfortunately the bed was actually two twin beds pushed together!

The staff were very accommodating, allowing us to check in one hour earlier and quite friendly.

The only weird thing was when we got a knock on the door about 9.30pm and one of the girls began unlocking the door and entering before we could get to it. She apologised, explaining she didn't realise the room was occupied!!! Hopefully, her intentions really were innocent!

Otherwise, it was close to the beaches and restaurants and we had a good time.

“Terrible...”

Arthur's by the Sea

This is like staying at a hostel, the hotel bears a resemblance to the website, but that is it. Its not clean, our door did not shut properly, you were able to see right into the room from the hallway (we had to put blankets over the door!). Only one cold tap worked, no hot water and the restaurant is "still" temporarily closed.

Which is a major issue, its extremely difficult to get nice food in Tobago, they have a predisposition for highly processed food which has largely gone out of favor in most other parts of the world, the majority of restaurants serve hamburgers and pizzas as the primary choice. With little in the way of nice fresh fish.

Its close to Pidgeon Point Park - which is a plus as this is closest nice/safe beach.

My verdict is there are much better/charming/valued islands in the carribean. The Tobagoans have little respect for Tourists, provide poor service and harrass you to buy things, even after you have paid to get into private beaches. Best to avoid it.

Despite their online cancellation policy, which says you get a full deposit refund if you cancel before 15 days until your reservation, they refused to give me a refund.

“Sheets were dirty”

The room seemed clean but there seemed to be rat droppings in the bathroom and we didn't think the sheets had been cleaned...hair all over. The refrigerator had a horrible garlic smell. Room could use some decoration like some beach pictures on the wall or something! There were also some local guys hanging around the courtyard and they didn't seem to work there which made my roommate and I (both female) a little uncomforatable. The front desk staff wasn't especially helpful. Otherwise, the air conditioning and fan worked great! I would not stay here again!

“Horrible - don't go there”

Arthur's by the Sea

I was informed that my reservation, made through Travelocity, was overbooked upon my arrival. They were able to get me in for the first night, forcing me to look for another place to stay the rest of my visit. I wish I had not stayed there at all, but it was shortly after Carnival and most of Tobago was booked, and I was tired after almost 24 hours of travel north from S America. My room was of lower quality than the typical Motel 6 on any random highway in N America. There were no safes, either in room or at front desk. Anyone could have broken through the "front" door by pushing very hard on it, the locks were flimsy. And there were no bolts or bars to help secure the sliding glass door - so the room on the ground floor could have very easily been broken into... which made me nervous, as I had some very expensive items with me as I was returning to N America after being away for nearly a year, stopping in Trinidad for a bit of R&R. The toilet almost flushed - if you jiggled the handle enough. The small room just did not seem clean either. And I was awakened in the morning with a loud and spine-tingling scream. I only hope that the woman above me was not murdered! Seriously, though, I think it was a case of domestic abuse, scary. Stay away from Arthurs.
