We spent a week at Turtle Beach and had an unforgettable holiday. We took our 16 year old daughter and her friend - which was just as well as they kept each other company (the other guests were mainly middle aged couples - we went before schools broke up as they'd finished their exams). The staff were all very friendly and helpful, and the rooms were fine - clean and functional. Our room with a queen sized bed was bigger than the girls' twin beded room (ours had an extra "study" part) - but they still had plenty of room for two. There were coffee/tea making facilities in the room which were replenished each day, plus a fridge.
We went Room Only but in hindsight wished we'd gone All Inclusive. The buffet breakfast was 100 TT$ - not so great when you only want some fruit or cereal. The lunch was 120 TT$ - again, a lovely fresh buffet - but expensive (x4) when you just want a sandwich or a snack. On the last day we asked if they did any 'light lunches' and they pulled out a menu which gave sandwich options for around 45 TT$! I just wish the hotel had advertised this, as on a couple of occasions (to save money) we'd taken a taxi into Crown Point (between 120-200 TT$ return, depending on how we negotiated) for lunch at one of the cabins at Storebay which was around 40 TT$ - and we could have easily have eaten a sandwich at the hotel. We had dinner a couple of times at the hotel (225 TT$) which was a delicious and freshly prepared buffet - but again, found this quite expensive (x4), so took a taxi into Crown Point on a few evenings to eat there.
We were approached on the beach on our first day by people selling trips (island tours, jeep safaris, boat trips etc) but someone called Keith had been recommended to us (Keith Samuels, A Team Tours). He appeared on our second day around the pool and we booked with him - he's an ex-Mr Tobago, very big, very laid back, very knowledgeable and friendly. We did a full day island tour with him, taking in St James' Fort, Argyle Waterfall, rainforest tour, lunch at Jemma's Treehouse, Englishman's Bay - a whistlestop tour of practically every town and bay on the whole island. He picked us up at 8.30am and dropped us back at 6.30pm - a truly packed day. He also provided all the refreshments we needed for the day - and happily stopped off on the way back to the hotel for us to pick up a takeaway pizza for dinner. We also did the glass bottomed boat/beach bbq with him which was a great day - apart from the rain and wind when we were on the boat. He suggested picking us up from our hotel an hour early to take us somewhere else for breakfast (his idea - no extra charge - as he'd heard us complaining it was expensive) and took us to Bonkers/Toucan Inn which was lovely. Breakfast was half the price of Turtle Beach and just as good! We also went to Sunday School with Keith (an evening of steel bands, dancing, eating and drinking in Buccoo) - again he looked after us, even seeing off a drunk (but friendly) local who wanted to dance with our 16 year old!
We booked another boat trip with Stumpy aka Tuna Man as we hadn't really done much snorkelling on the glass bottomed boat trip as the weather was so wet & wild. We met him on the beach and he'd also been recommended by other guests. He picked us up in his boat (just the 4 of us) from the beach outside the hotel and took us off - he was happy to go anywhere we wanted - but we just went to the Nylon Pool to practise snorkelling, then to Buccoo Reef to do snorkelling. He came in with us and was brilliant at calling over our two girls to point out the shoals of fish and other sea creatures. He had the girls fishing on the way there and back and they caught a fish each (for his dinner!) He also provided a cool box with water, soft drinks and beers for us during the trip. It was a great afternoon, not rushed at all - he let us stay as long as we wanted.
There was entertainment in the evenings, but as we tended to go out for dinner, only caught the end when we came back. The hotel was much busier over the weekend - and by the Monday night the place was half empty so the poolside bar was closed.
We were lucky enough to come back from dinner one evening and were sitting having drinks when the turtle-watch patrol came to say a leatherback turtle had come up so we went along the beach to watch her laying her eggs. After she'd been gently guided back into the sea we were walking back when another turtle was making her way back - this was a hawksbill. Then as we arrived back at the hotel bar, another leatherback was just making her way out of the sea, so we stood quietly and watched her laying her eggs too. That just made the holiday!
All in all, I'd recommend Turtle Beach, but in hindsight would have booked AI rather than room only (or perhaps hired a car). We had been advised to go room only as food and drink is relative inexpensive - but it would have only worked out cheaper if we'd been staying at Crown Point and not have to add the taxi fare into the equation. It would have been cheaper book AI at the time of booking than trying to upgrade once there (600 TT$ per person per day for AI) - but apart from that (which wasn't the hotel's fault) we had a brilliant holiday, met some great people - and would definitely go back.
All the rooms are sea-facing but some are slightly larger than others
