Excellent location and base for the independent traveller… OK, you can walk to the local beaches but with a car (we rented Lynda’s – good condition estate) within 15 mins drive you can be exploring this tropical paradise for hours without seeing another person.
Our routine may not be typical but for us the Hummingbird was just perfect – breakfast, out by 9:30 walking / sightseeing during the day to return around 4pm for a cooling swim, sit around the clean pool (all rooms face the pool) and get ready for dinner… lots of different restaurants in the area… We found good vegetarian food in 12 different restaurants - varying is price, setting and elegance … although we were running out of options at the end. £25 – 60 for a meal for two including wine… which is the major cost £15 - 20 for a bottle of new world red that would cost £13 or less in UK restaurants. Beer at around £1 or cocktails at £3.50 are a cheaper option.
Linda and Paul (in particular) are experienced hoteliers and from our observation over the two weeks able to perfectly mirror different guests approach and requirements. They are always around somewhere, approachable, friendly and helpful but they will leave you to choose the level of interaction that you want.
The continental breakfast was good value with Paul’s niece Maxine (on a 3 month working holiday) providing a warm Welsh smile and service. We never experienced Paul’s cooking as such but other guests did and seemed to enjoy the experience.
Bottom line: the Hummingbird deserves its status (tripadvisor / Rough Guide) In our opinion it is a small, clean, friendly, well run, good value hotel in a good location (quiet but close to the main commercial centre / airport) with a nice personal touch – very late checkout, farewell hug and free transport to the airport etc… Try it… you will not be disappointed.
