Excellent location and base for the independent traveller… OK, you can walk to the local beaches but with a car (we rented Lynda’s – good condition estate) within 15 mins drive you can be exploring this tropical paradise for hours without seeing another person.

Our routine may not be typical but for us the Hummingbird was just perfect – breakfast, out by 9:30 walking / sightseeing during the day to return around 4pm for a cooling swim, sit around the clean pool (all rooms face the pool) and get ready for dinner… lots of different restaurants in the area… We found good vegetarian food in 12 different restaurants - varying is price, setting and elegance … although we were running out of options at the end. £25 – 60 for a meal for two including wine… which is the major cost £15 - 20 for a bottle of new world red that would cost £13 or less in UK restaurants. Beer at around £1 or cocktails at £3.50 are a cheaper option.

Linda and Paul (in particular) are experienced hoteliers and from our observation over the two weeks able to perfectly mirror different guests approach and requirements. They are always around somewhere, approachable, friendly and helpful but they will leave you to choose the level of interaction that you want.

The continental breakfast was good value with Paul’s niece Maxine (on a 3 month working holiday) providing a warm Welsh smile and service. We never experienced Paul’s cooking as such but other guests did and seemed to enjoy the experience.

Bottom line: the Hummingbird deserves its status (tripadvisor / Rough Guide) In our opinion it is a small, clean, friendly, well run, good value hotel in a good location (quiet but close to the main commercial centre / airport) with a nice personal touch – very late checkout, farewell hug and free transport to the airport etc… Try it… you will not be disappointed.

I read reviews and decided to trust previous travellers about this hotel. When I spoke to Linda and asked questions, I got such a good feeling that I immediately booked 2 rooms. Hummingbird is a cozy place, rooms were good. If you needed anything, all you had to do was ask. Paul & Linda (and Maxine) seemed to go out of their way to make our stay a positive one. The 4 of us stayed 1 week and were sad to leave since we had so much fun. The other guests were great and we all made a lot of new friends while we were there. 2 families had children and they would all play in the pool together. Paul is a wonderful cook. Some of my best meals in Tobago were at the Hummingbird. I really enjoyed the family atmosphere that let me lay back, chill out and enjoy. I had such a good time. When we had to leave, I was so sad to leave I cried. Thank you, Hummingbird! Love you guys! We'll be back.

“Value for Money”

We stayed for 2 weeks. We were well looked after and well advised. The hotel is not 5 star and neither did we want or expect it to be so. It does however represent very good value for money and is a bit of home from home in an exotic part of the world. It is a bit of a walk to the “town centre” and beaches. This is only a problem on the way back from a restaurant after a good meal and a rum punch or two. But taxis are cheap and Paul will give you a lift to the beach in the morning. One bit of practical criticism is that we could have done with a bedside table and reading light – but that is all.

“Good Budget Hotel”

The Hummingbird

We stayed in the slightly larger room with sitting area, tv and large double bed, which was good value at 65$ per night.
Read the reports on trip advisor and would mostly agree.
As we stayed for seven nights we received complimentary continental breakfast consisting of Cereals, toast and tea or coffee which was plenty to keep you going.
The room was cleaned every day and towels changed if necessary. Although there is a mini bar in the room , there are no tea making facilities or hairdryers.
The lifts from Paul to the nearby beachs was really appreciated in the heat. His cooking is great and probably the best value around.
They also have a car to hire which was very convenient at a good price.
The Island is not very commercialised and most people seem to be in bed early, apart from the weekends when all the locals in their cars with extremely loud stereos seem to be driving around.
I would recomend this budget hotel for a relaxing break, not too far from the beach.

“Pool and homely”

We were made so welcome, every question answered in such detail, with so much concern for us to make as much of our stay as possible. Enquiries about trips, were answered by arranging everything for us, with the best people, for the best price. It really isn't too good to be true. We will never forget the boat trip and snorkelling with the ray, loved the pool, and if there weren't so many other places to see would be straight back next year.
