My friend, another single girl, and I arrived Wednesday, February 20th and left on Monday the 25th. This was my second trip to Club Med Turkoise, the first was late January of 2003. I was amazed at how consistent the quality was in 5 years.
First of all, I have to compliment the chefs. The food both times was of excellent quality and was one of the reasons I considered returning. I have stayed at several all inclusives and the food here was superior to all the others, including a 5 star in Playa Del Carmen. Each night had a different theme including Middle Eastern, seafood, Italian, Asian and French.
Standouts for me were the seafood and French nights, but there were wonderful things every evening. The mussels on seafood night, the frog legs and quiche on French night, and the gnocci on Italian night were all outstanding. The carpaccio was excellent at lunch and dinner. Every day, at both lunch and dinner, there was a wonderful salad and fruit bar, breads, cheeses, cold salads and appetizers, soup, and lots of hot dishes to choose from as well as their signature chocolate bread. I ate the grilled fish at both lunch and dinner. They have a wonderful pastry chef and one evening almost everything was made with strawberries. I thought I was in heaven. I loved the Tiramisu too. Breakfast included fresh fruit, cold & hot cereals, breads, meats and cheeses, eggs cooked to order, omelets, boiled & scrambled eggs, crispy bacon, sausage, french toast, crepes and more.
There were loads of activities if you wanted to participate. Some in the fitness center, some by or in the pool, watersports at the beach or snorkeling off-shore. You could also learn the trapeze if you were looking for something different. I chose to spend most of my time relaxing on the beach in the shade.
The shows each evening were better than I remember from 5 years ago. The trapeze and circus nights were my favorites, but the Oscars and Illusion were also very entertaining.
Not to be missed were performances at Sharkie's Bar by Daniel and Nadine. They also perform some locally and would have been the only thing to tempt me off-property if I'd known about them in advance. Sharkie's also has a really good chicken caesar wrap if you're hungry between times.
Turks and Caicos has changed quite a bit in the last 5 years. It is being developed very quickly with huge resort and condo complexes going up. One can only hope that the government willl make sure that the developers help pay for infrastructure and provide a tax base so that the "belongers" aren't priced right off their islands.
The beach is absolutely beautiful and the water is the brightest I've seen. Turkoise is an apt name. Beach chairs were plentiful. The room was pleasant, with 2 large wardrobes, 2 safes, a coffee pot and a small refrigerator hidden under the TV. Two large bottles of water were supplied each day.
The people, both g.o.'s and guests, make it a fun and interesting experience. I met terrific people from Canada, including Annie, the surgeon, Roger and Kim, the ex-couple, (thanks to Roger for the remodeling tips) and the ex-g.o. and costume designer from the Plains. I especially enjoyed talking with the Indian couple from Boston, the couple from St. Lucia, the g.o. from Poland and the novel translator from Paris. You can keep to yourself if you want, but I don't know why you would when there are so many interesting people around you. The Chief of Village was a wonderful ambassador for Club Med as was the entertainer who stepped in while he was away. Rosario, the Italian chef, was very personable and all the g.o.'s really seemed to want to make sure that you enjoyed your stay. People are what really makes the difference between a good time and a great one.
OK, now that I've gone on and on about how wonderful Club Med was, here are the couple of nit-picky little things that bothered me. You really have to work to find anything wrong with this property.
I didn't bring bug spray (my fault) since I didn't have any problems during my last stay, which was in January. This time, the lack of screens on the windows made me mosquito bait. The only spray available was at the boutique when it opened at $12 a can. Also, there were lots of wooden "umbrellas" on the beach, but not quite enough. Unless you got there early and staked a claim, shade could be very hard to come by. Oh, and the crepes at breakfast and dessert had what tasted like canned pie filling, I'd pass on those. OK, so there was really nothing to complain about. I had a great time and would go back again and again. Maybe just for the chocolate bread...
