We first tried Duggan's five or six years ago and were left with a feeling of shame ... shame that we actually sat still for the fleecing. Years passed and we gave them another try last night. Fooled twice:shame on us!
We're not high maintenance people and really don't want or expect fawning attention .. but none at all?. None is exactly what we got last night.
We were quickly seated but were then left for an uncomfortably long time with nothing more than very pedestrian menus touting all of the past "notables" that swear by the establishment. Suddenly, maitre'd appeared and asked if we wanted drinks ... We requested a wine list and were rewarded within the next 15 or 20 minutes with a reasonably priced bottle .
We then learned that the waitstaff would be with us shortly.
Well, the eventual waitress was short with us but wasn't exactly there shortly. She blurted out the specials and then ran off to attend to a large party and a few interum tables. The competitors for her attention soon proved to be our downfall. After our order was eventually placed, broken only by a surgical strike delivery of bread and appetizers ... the food eventually arrived ( delivered by an as yet un-met actor ). Net time to entree? Not much more than an hour. Now that's intimate dining for two! A first request for water was denied but within the next 15 minutes, after virtually all of the meal was eaten we did eventually score from: our original waitress. Sweet!
We requested the check and watched her enter the kitchen and then leave to attend to larger parties. Certain that she had put the request in we thought we'd be on our way soon ... after 20 minutes we caught her eye and saw her scoot to the kitchen and then heard the infamous Duggan himself accept the request . He appeared a few minutes later with the tab in hand. My husband didn't even look at the bill or speak to the owner but instead handed him the plastic and a grim stare. He scurried into the back and ran the card in a jiffy .. the fastest we'd seen anyone move for us all night. He did not take pause to question our very evident unease and left us without another word.
My husband wanted to leave nothing but I appealed and we settled for barely more then 10%. I'm beginning to think my husband was right.
In any case, the food was unremarkable and the menu uninspired. You can get anything served at Duggans for much less and actually have a good time doing it. This place is resting on the questionable achievements of the ever distant past and they have not one idea how to treat a small table with anything but distain. Please avoid this place and let them quietly erode into their rightful oblivion.
