Pros - The hotel is located on a beautiful stretch of beach on the south east side of the island. There is a sandy part of the ocean and then there is sea grass. But there is abundant sea life is you snorkel past the grass to the reef. Walk south west on the beach, a little bit past where the hotel ends, and you will see a clump of palm trees. Snorkel out to the reef from there since the reef is closer. Amazing fish and live breathing coral!! We were told that two marine biologists had snorkeled the day before and found the reef to be extremely healthy. We saw lobster, barracuda and a multitude of fish. Just watch out for the spiny black sea urchins. If you want to stay closer to the shore snorkel around the peer and you will see schools of fish. Lots of needle nose fish. My husband and son did dive, but this is done on the northern side of the island where the larger reefs are.

Sunrises are unbelievable and you will be the first Americans to feel and see the sun every morning since Point Udall (visible from the hotel) is the farthest eastern point of the US. Every room at the hotel has a view of the ocean!

The standard room we had was huge and clean. It had a refrigerator, microwave and small sink with glasses. Maid service was wonderful.

The food was excellent and above standard though pricey and I would highly recommend the meal plan. Most of the wait staff we encountered were extremely helpful; especially the ladies at the Dockside Cafe.

Front desk staff were helpful. Val told us to contact Douglas (taxi driver) for our return to the airport and he was very reasonable. $12 per person.

Recomendations: Go to Dominos in the rainforest to see the beer drinking pigs (see the picture). Actually they drink non-alcoholic beer for you animal lovers. Do the Tan Tan Tour if you like fourwheeling/adventure and want to see the island from the tops of the mountains. You ride in a jeep and it is a wild ride. Ask for Dean!! Not for the faint of heart and no little kids. Cane Bay Diving is outstanding.

Cons - The hotel is out of the way and you will either need a car or taxi/shuttle to get to town, diving and sightseeing. Taxis are very expensive. To town $20 for two people one way. Use the shuttle for town. It is $10 roundtrip. Cane Bay Diving (satellite site at the hotel) will pick you up if you purchase a dive package and bring you back afterwards. There is no diving at the resort unless you specifically ask to be taken out. The better dive sites are at the north west part of the island.

Make sure to bring tip money if you purchase your meal plan will not include it even if you don't use all the money in one meal. And they expect 18%. We tipped based on service. Also if you go over on your meal ticket for one meal they will charge you the difference at the end of your stay even if you didn't use all your monies on the other meals. Service can be slow at times at all eateries but you are in the Caribbean.

Yes, there are ants on the beach in the evening so stay on the beachchairs or near the water or hotel. And we did find one roach in our room near the end of our trip. We did shake all our clothing outside as a precaution once home. It is the Carribbean though.

Don't lose your towel because you'll pay for it.

There wasn't too much to do in the evening except for the casino which doesn't help when you have two teens. The beach party night was the best night. Karoake was good on another night. Thank god the hotel has three public computers with internet service.

The large city-like petroleum company Hervosa houses many of their out of town employees at the hotel so the bar is full primarily of single men in the evening. We didn't see that many families and were told it was off season though the northeast schools were off for Easter week.

Overall we prefer to stay at an all-inclusive so that we don't have to worry about tipping and meals plus we have teens that eat and drink all day even if the food is not outstanding. We didn't like using the meal coupons and found it cumbersome. Wrist bands would have been better. The hotel could also use more evening entertainment.

As my wife has all ready positively reviewed our stay, I won't belabor you with what we liked about it. I would however like to explain why Sea Grass is a GOOD thing. Sea Grass represents life. That is where the fish and other marine life hang out. Sea Grass around the reef is a good thing for people who want a great snorkel just off shore. Enjoy the reef around the Divi now before global warming or another major storm finishes what Hurricane hugo started in the 80's. If one doesn't like the feel of vegitation under one's feet may I suggest a pair of water shoes available at K-Mart for under $10 USD. Travels to less desireable destinations like Nassau has shown me that they are invaluable.
(I also believe that this undersea life is protected by many statutes and it would be very Illegal for the management to plow the plant growth to give the illusion of a larger sandy shore.)
I will grant that the restaurant can be a tad slow. Don't go there before you have to catch your plane home, but overall the Divi is a great destination where I made many great friends among the guests and staff, and will be returning this July.

“Best resort in the Caribbean!!!”

Divi Carina Bay Resort and Casino

This is an awesome resort and I highly recommend it. I spent a relaxing week here march 3-10, 2007 and found the Divi was incredible, from the helpful staff, luxurious room, perfect location, and superb snorkelling reefs just offshore, with 60plus ft of visibility. The GM, Pat, is available to help assist you and I experienced top rate customer service from front desk, ask for Lucia, Bernalyn, Shenik, they are friendly and efficient.
The east end where the Divi is located is great spot, they have shuttle for $10pp RT if more than 1 person goes at same time to Christensted to stock up on souvenirs and cheap rum, snacks for your mini fridge, or just to enjoy the boardwalk restaurants.
The Divi offers free internet in main front desk area which is convenient, on site scuba shop, snorkel shack with non motorized water gear for rent, lots of shade, hammocks, ping pong table, pool, jacuzzi, bar and grill, coffee shop, and of course the casino, located behind the resort across the street. Locals are kind and personable and Buck island is good too, but I found more live coral and fish snorkelling off the resort.
You will really enjoy this resort and amenities like I did, and I have travelled quite a bit since I am flight crew. Cheers to your vacation! Have an excellent time!

“Our Favorite Part of the Trip”

We just spent a week long honeymoon in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Split the week up half at Divi on St. Croix and other half on east end of St. Thomas at Point Pleasant. Having done both I can comfortably say the Divi was our favorite part. We loved being in a remote area, the people were all so nice (from cab drivers to hotel staff). We learned very quickly that if you want to eat lunch around 12 you need to sit down in the bar area around 11 and casually ask for menus. This helped immensely to start the ball in motion even though it still took close to an hour to get a burger. Same situation for dinner and breakfast, go way earlier than you want to eat. All of the food ranged from fine to excellent depending on where you ate. Word to the wise - where burgers are concerned, they take medium-rare to mean "still mooing." Once you get used to the idea of planning long meals it is kind of nice. We were on vacation so where did we have to be? Nowhere. Why not spend a couple hours enjoying a meal? All eating venues overlook the beautiful ocean and beach and some are outside so you aren't missing time in the sun unless you want to. We loved this place compared to all on St. Thomas. For the same nightly price you get much much less on St. Thomas. This Divi was luxurious and so relaxing. If you can chill out and be patient, it's the place for you. Understanding that other cultures are not always in a rush like mainland Americans goes a long way toward enjoying your vacations.

“Horrible service”

Divi Carina Bay Resort and Casino

Nice enough hotel for our purposes (beach and sun), the rooms were fine and very clean, and front desk/maid staff provided good service. For the most part, however, the food service was horrible. It took (literally) hours to get our food at several of our meals, and nobody even approached our table to apologize or explain. And when we finally got our food it was clear that it had been sitting under a heat lamp for some time and, on top of that, it wasn't very good. Then we had to wait hours for our check. That probably would have been fine, but on top of that, the wait staff either totally ignored us or was outright rude. To be fair, the food service at the bar was good, and several of the bartenders were excellent (others seemed overwhelmed and unable to handle). I got the feeling that they were severely understaffed. That would have been fine but the ignoring/rudeness made it seriously annoying.
