I do not enjoy panning a hotel but I believe a warning to others is in order. My husband and I have stayed in many hotels on many islands, so we are not novices. We returned, 2 days ago, from a week at the Hotel Caravelle. We will not return to this hotel. I'll start with the pluses.... the rooms are clean and bug free. That's where it ends. One of our main reasons for visiting 'tropical islands' is to be able to open our room to the evening breezes and hear the waves breaking on the shoreline. Without this ability we would just as soon stay home. We booked an oceanfront room with the Caravelle through USAirways Vacations. Looking at the web site for the Caravelle you see a room with a sliding door facing the water. Looks nice.... we booked and had to pay in full in advance. It is only after you check in that you find out that you aren't 'allowed' to open said doors!!!!! And god help you if you DO open them! We hate sleeping with air conditioning. The second night, after freezing the first night with the a.c. on (could not get the temp. regulated), we opened the door about 1 ft. At 1:15 am we were awakened by the phone. A near hysterical male voice demanded "you will close and lock the door, you will close and lock the door"!! (to begin with, when we checked in, the door wasn't closed, and it wouldn't lock) My husband complained the next morning only to be told it was hotel policy. The reason? Local crime. Now they have your money and you are stuck there. There is no way anyone but James Bond could get in that room through the window/door. Not to mention that the doors to the rooms could easily be removed since the hinges were on the outside. Add to this the lack of hot water and we had a miserable stay. I would only reccommend this hotel to individuals who have an aversion to fresh air. At the other end of the new boardwalk you will find the King Christian Hotel. We stopped in and asked if they had a 'closed door' policy. They thought we were nuts. The King Christian is also in MUCH better condition. The Caravelle has a seedy look. Too bad... it could be a nice place to stay.
