Wife, 2 kids, and mother-in-law spent five great nights here.
Our travel agent tried to steer us towards resorts that she said are more kid-friendly, but this was our vacation too, and the last thing we want to do with our kids is dump them in a kids club. Anyway, they had a fantastic time, as did the rest of us. We managed to have a romantic (yes, it's possible even with kids and in-law in tow!) and memorable vacation, and would certainly return to the resort.
ROOMS: Rates were so good for this time of the year that we decided to splurge and get suites in the harbor view wing (2 rms each with Jacuzzi) and compared with the basic rooms it was worth it. Now that we've been there, we'd opt for the Morninstar wing, even though there are no suites, because (especially this time of the year) it was cooler down near the beach and more scenic.
LIZARDS!: The place is chock full of iguanas, a source of constant amazement to the kids (our 4 year-old called them dinosaurs).
FOOD: Coco's on the beach was just right for the family and service was good considering that this is not a five-star resort and service can be slow on the islands We very much enjoyed dressing up a bit and dining at Havana Blue which is about as hip and trendy as things got there - a beautifully designed space wtih great food.
That being said, because the resort is perched on a cliff overlooking the ocean, it is simply beautiful The ferry that takes you an a scenic ride (past the gargantuan cruise ships) into Charlotte Amalai's harbor and shopping district is a real plus. The funicular to the beach from the cliff worked for exactly one day and was out of order the rest of the days.
As others had noticed, there was a moldy smell in the Harbor View Wing, especially on the lower levels, but NOT in our rooms (only in the exterior areas).
All in all, it's a distinctive place - not one of those cookie cutter resorts -- and definitely worth a visit.
