The Frenchman's Reef is a solid choice for St. Thomas. It has a beautiful view of the harbor and ocean. Yes, you do have to walk down a bunch of steps to get to the beach, but that's fine. There are plenty of chairs and you can spread out to get away from the crowds.

The food at the hotel is pricey, but they do give you good value. For breakfast, get food at the store to cut down on costs. they have fruits, coffee, bagels etc and a toaster and microwave. Of course you can buy stuff in town and it's cheaper. Our room had a fridge.

The Action Planning Center is great, they have an extensive selection of tours and restaurants.

Warning: the block of rooms called Sea Cliff I think had this awful smell in the halls. We stayed in the main part of the hotel and it was fine. They also try to sell you the Time Shares at Frenchman's Cove nonstop. Just say you signed up and they will leave you alone.

Overall: Good base to explore St. Thomas. It's not small and cozy but it's a solid option.

just returned from the marriott frenchmans reef 12 /23/2007. we stayed at the morning star garden view. they put us right next to the building used for maid service very loud. no mold in are room but bring some skin so soft. the sand flee,s get into your room at sun set and bite you all nite. front desk was probably the worst i ever have been exposed too. they act like they did me some kind of favor by breathing. speaking of poor customer service avoid hertz at the airport at all cost!!! now the good weather was perfect the beach at the marriott is awesome. and better then sapphire and coki beach. if you have not been to coki beach its nice but you literally park in a junk yard before the locals attack you and become your server for your stay. the bath,s at virgon gorda b.v.I.are a musy see also a day at trunk bay in st john,s is a must nice people and great snorleling. bella blue was good for dinner . hotel was good also . casual and fun the fat turtle at the new yacht club was also good. absolutely a gorgeous location. i wish everybody in st thomas could take cleanliness and proper sanitation more seriously. i own my own restaurant and would like to introduce them soap and water!!!

I stayed at the Morning Star Beach Resort for three nights in December and thoroughly enjoyed it. The beach and pool are nice and not too crowded - although I wonder if that will be the case once the timeshares adjacent to the Frenchmans Reef get fully sold. I liked being able to smoke cigars at Havana Blue and they even have a cigar menu. Prices are reasonable at happy hour and the food and mojitos are great. Coco Joes is a wonderful place for breakfast and for drinks throughout the day and night. Prices are a little high, but it is right on the beach, so what do you expect? Taxi from the airport cost $10 for me and $2 for my bag. There is a water taxi from Frenchmans Reef to town and it is worth going on just for the ride. $12 round trip. Charlotte Amalie is very crowded when multiple cruise ships are in town, which is most of the time.
I loved watching the cruise ships glide by from my balcony and drifting off to sleep at night to the sounds of the waves crashing on the beach. I'll go back.

Wife, 2 kids, and mother-in-law spent five great nights here.
Our travel agent tried to steer us towards resorts that she said are more kid-friendly, but this was our vacation too, and the last thing we want to do with our kids is dump them in a kids club. Anyway, they had a fantastic time, as did the rest of us. We managed to have a romantic (yes, it's possible even with kids and in-law in tow!) and memorable vacation, and would certainly return to the resort.

ROOMS: Rates were so good for this time of the year that we decided to splurge and get suites in the harbor view wing (2 rms each with Jacuzzi) and compared with the basic rooms it was worth it. Now that we've been there, we'd opt for the Morninstar wing, even though there are no suites, because (especially this time of the year) it was cooler down near the beach and more scenic.

LIZARDS!: The place is chock full of iguanas, a source of constant amazement to the kids (our 4 year-old called them dinosaurs).

FOOD: Coco's on the beach was just right for the family and service was good considering that this is not a five-star resort and service can be slow on the islands We very much enjoyed dressing up a bit and dining at Havana Blue which is about as hip and trendy as things got there - a beautifully designed space wtih great food.

That being said, because the resort is perched on a cliff overlooking the ocean, it is simply beautiful The ferry that takes you an a scenic ride (past the gargantuan cruise ships) into Charlotte Amalai's harbor and shopping district is a real plus. The funicular to the beach from the cliff worked for exactly one day and was out of order the rest of the days.

As others had noticed, there was a moldy smell in the Harbor View Wing, especially on the lower levels, but NOT in our rooms (only in the exterior areas).

All in all, it's a distinctive place - not one of those cookie cutter resorts -- and definitely worth a visit.
