My wife and I ate at this restaurant on the evening of 4/17/09. We both feel it was the best meal we have ever had at a restaurant.
We started with a drink at the bar. The bartender was very friendly and professional. She answered questions and talked, but moved away and allowed me and my wife to talk and feel private also. The bar is attractive and we sat near the end where you can view Cruz Bay and the adjacent islands.
We were seated at a table near, but not next to the railing overlooking Cruz Bay. Our reservation was timed so that we could watch the sun set and it was beautiful. Our waitress was as professional as I have ever had. She was attentive without being obnoxious. She never missed the fact that we were out of water or drinks but did not intrude while performing her duties. She had specific recommendations which proved to be good. In particular she recommended a wine and a dessert which my wife and I both found to be excellent.
I ordered from the menu and my wife had the special. We both felt our food was delicious. We typically like to order one course at a time at nice restaurants because we find that most of the time they try to rush us through. This time, the waitress said that they like to know all of our selections so that they could prepare and deliver them in a proper time and sequence. We hesitated, but as it turned out they were telling the truth and the entire meal was two hours from start to finish with each course served with perfect timing.
The music that was playing was very enjoyable. We wanted to "dress up" which for the island means to wear something nicer than shorts, flip-flops and a T-shirt. My wife wore a nice island print dress and I wore pants and an island print shirt. However, others were dressed slightly more formally (nobody was in jacket and tie, just nicer black dresses and an occasional jacket only) and some were in shorts and polo shirts. I would recommend something like we wore or better.
The only thing we didn't like was that we called the day before and requested a table with a view. One day ahead was not soon enough to reserve one at the rail overlooking the bay. We do not feel that this is their fault though. We just recommend calling earlier if you want to get that type of seat.

My husband & I dined at Asolare on March 3, 2009 and were devastated by the prices. We have dined at Asolare for the last 6 years on our annual visit but never again. Entrees start at $42 , with no Lobster in sight! Beautiful view. We may visit the bar if they allow it but will not be dining thwre again.

We just ate at Asolare 2 nights ago and for the price it wasn't worth it. Yes the sunset is beautiful, but still not wirth the cost. The appetizer of shrimp tempura was very nice, but the the house salad had way too much dressing and I owuld hav loved to have some bread to absorb some of the way too fruity taste; but since they are an "Asian" influenced restaurant they do NOT serve bread as told to me by the waiters. Though it list itself as French-Asian and the last time I was in France I had tons of bread...though you can have bread if you order dessert...bread pudding! Oh yeah, and the wine list was pretencious. The whole experience was average though the staff was very nice and helpful it was not worth the money. Last night we went to Zozo's an Italian rest and the food was devine, the service great as well as the atmospher. The wine was reasonably priced from low to high and both our meals were well worth the money...and they had Bread! I would suggest Zozo's over Asolare anytime!

My wife and I ate at Asolare while we were staying at the bed and breakfast next door, Estate Lindholm. We chose the first seating at 6:00 PM and that turned out to be the correct choice, since we were treated to a simply stunning view of the setting sun. The later seating at 8:30 would have missed it completely. We were also fortunate to get there right on time so we got a table at the railing. Couples who got there a few minutes later looked a little disappointed at having to watch the fireworks from deeper inside the dining room.

The restaurant itself is lovely. The dining room is somewhat rustic but classy, featuring stone arches, candles, and such. Of course, the main feature is the stunning view out onto Cruz Bay.

The food was excellent. My wife had a mahi-mahi dish and I had tuna encrusted in sesame and green tea and it was absolutely fantastic: cooked to perfection with just enough seasoning to complement the flavor of an unbelievably fresh piece of tuna. The portions were generous and the wait staff were knowledgeable and responsive. The server found us nice wines to accompany our dinners. Dessert was just as good, although I was disappointed that cappucino was not an option (apparently few restaurants on St. John serve it).

We will definitely return to Asolare the next time we go to St. John. It was a truly memorable meal.

My Husband and I and our children come to St john every year and we LOVE it! This is, by far, our favorite night out.(sometimes 2 nights!) We get a babysitter and get the 5:30 reservation seating so we get a rail table for the best view. The waitstaff is so friendly and personal. For Appetizers,I LOVE the Tempura Shrimp special and the Tuna Tartar and we always try to get the Thai Coconut soup with shrimp, if we are eating alot. For the Main dishes, I highly recommend the...well, I like alot of the menu! My favorite is whatever special fish, or the Lobster ( soooo tender and the sauce is very flavorful). I really love the Lamb and the Filet Mignon. My husband is a diehard Tuna fan or he'll get the Duck. Our experiences there have always been fabulous. sometimes we don't get our perfect sunset, but the atmosphere of the old house that the restaurant is set in is GORGEOUS. The music is hip and the staff is relaxed and helpful. It's not high-end fine-uptight dining. Just a relaxed, absolutely beautiful, restaurant with fantastic food. I DO recommend getting a 5:30 or 8pm reservation or close to this time or you may end up sitting inside. I have read other reviews and I tend to think that maybe the negative ones didn't get to sit outside. Because we are always so excited to eat here, so I don't understand those reviews. oh, I almost forgot the DESSERTS!!!! I love the Bread pudding and the Tiramisu and the new dessert, the 3 milks with banana! For a cocktail, the swizzle and the sunset martini.
