My husband and I just got back from our first vacation without our children. I was scoping out the Bahamas in general to see if it would be a place for our next family vacation. We had an amazing time - we will definitely return to the Bahamas with our kids. However, here is what you need to know before you go to the Sheraton: DO NOT under any circumstances book the all-inclusive package - as of right now, there are only 3 restaurants (if you can call them that) - one is a buffet, one if a poolside grill and one is an Upscale dining. We ate at the breakfast buffet once - it is not what you typically think of for a buffet- it is very weak, and not cheap- $14.95 for continental and $21.95 for everything. The Dolphin Grill is fine for a day at the beach, it has salads, burgers, sandwiches, etc - prices are about $10 - $15. We did not eat at the other restaurant.
Food on the entire island seemed to be very pricey. We did eat at some wonderful restaurants though. I highly recommend - Indigo Cafe (near Sandals), Cafe Matisse for Italian (near the Parliment Buildings), and for good seafood, go to the Poop Deck - be sure to go to the one near the Paradise Island Bridge. The concierge recommended that we eat at The Compass Point as well, which we did - but I would not recommend it. We did not like anything that we were served and the service was rude.
There is a mandatory Bellman fee per person you should know about - I think it was $5.50. All non-motorized sports are included, all you do is sign them out to your room. Be warned, while you are sitting on the beach you will be hounded by salespeople to take out a jetski or get your hairbraided, or to buy jewerly or something.
To go downtown during the day, just hop on the #10 bus - $1 per person. Just know the buses stop running at six pm. After that you need to take a cab. About $16-$20. In downtown there is a big strawmarket. I thought there was to be a lot of Bahamian goods. It is mostly knock-off pocketbooks and trickets that were made in China. However if you do want to buy something - remember you can haggle.
The people of the Bahamas were extremly friendly - their economy thrives on tourism.
The rooms are clean, sleek & modern. The beach is very nice - no worrying about getting a beach chair - there are lots and lots. Walk out to the coral reef on your left and just look down and you will see a lot of fish, you do not even need a snorkel (although they have them there for you to borrow). Check- out is at 11am if you ask they will give you until 12.
One quick not about the airport - there is only one restaurant - and it is not that good. If you are traveling with children you NEED to pack some toys or something because getting through the immigration/customs line can take about one hour.
Feel free to contact me with any questions. Have a great trip.
