“Great pools and slides, but look out for the prices”

Beach Tower at Atlantis

9 May 2008
4/5 found this review helpful

My wife and I took our two children (10, 12) to Atlantis, based mostly on the hype we heard from others. And true to form, the resort is like a "Disneyland" experience - beautiful landscaping and exterior architecture, pools everywhere you turn, water rides/slides that top anything I've ever experienced, and sunny weather. (We had about 15 minutes of rain one day). On the down side, our hotel room was far below our expectations (especially when you're paying about $400 a night) - while the room was clean, it still felt "old" and "cheap". (furniture, bedspreads, television, etc. were the same as what you'd experience at a Holiday Inn, Motel 6, or other "low/moderate" chain). The Bahamians at Atlantis were, in most cases, not overly friendly, and those that worked closeby (at local restuarants/retail stores) were apathetic, at best. Our biggest, and most negative, takeaway from this vacation was the outrageous prices for food. Soft drinks were $4-5 each, with $1.50-2.00 refills, Hamburgers were $12, Fries were $5, a chicken nugget kids meal (3 nuggets and fries) was $9. (Plus the automatic 15% gratuity added to every food ticket!). And that's just the "cheap, by-the-poolside" establishments. If you dared to try and eat at one of their white tablecloth restaurants, the entrees started at $50 each. When we called the desk to ask "where are your coke machines", they said, "there aren't any - you have to buy your sodas from the cash bar in your room". Call me a tightwad, but I just don't like spending $20 for 4 Cokes. And, when we needed an extra bottle of sunscreen, the cheapest we could find, in the Atlantis stores, was $21 (the same size and brand that we paid $6 for in the states). (For a family of four, those expenses quickly added up - to a point that it really tainted our impression of everything related to Atlantis. (Plus, it only makes it worse when we compared this to our amazing experience at Aruba last year).
Next year, we'll do our research a bit better. We will not be going back to Nassau.

“what a nightmare in price gouging”

Beach Tower at Atlantis

Arrived 4/27 it looked nice then the nightmare began. The Beach Towers are old and run down, they are the original Inca hostels. The Seaguls torcher you from sun up until sun down. the band plays from 10am, until 6pm and you can HEAR every note. Sleep was a thing of the past. We moved up one story and down about 30 feet, even worse. The exit door had no hydraulics on it and kept slamming all day and night. The entrance carpet was soaking wet for the first two feet, and bathroom was tiny. Not to mention that you are charged for ANY item that you take out of the frigde be it water or soda and wether you consume them or not. Extra fridges even for meds are $15.00 a day. No complimentary. Plus a 15% gratuitiy on ALL FOOD SERVICES, BE WARE. The food is outrageously priced, we heard nothing but complaints the entire 9 days there, from all sorts of people. Atlantis is buying up all the properties on Paradise Island to build more time shares, they are kicking people out that have been there for decades. And you are acosted every 10 feet by someone in orange trying to get you to go to the Time Share sales pitch. Stay somewhere else, the locals are great and kind. The place means income for the island but most people only work a couple of days because of the slump. Spend your dollars staying on the main island its worth it. Senore Frogs was AWESOME.

“Family Vacation”

Beach Tower at Atlantis

5 May 2008
6/6 found this review helpful

Just got back from Atlantis May 3rd, travelled with wife and 2 kids 12 and 11.
Was a bit worried as some reviews have been a bit negative.
Travelling from airport was a breeze just hopped in a cab, cost about $40 + tip.
Had cab driver stop at small store bought some boxes of koolaid jammers and capri sun
and a couple gallons of water, brought granola bars, pringels etc for snacks from home.
Don't stop to buy alcohol as just around the corner from the Atlantis, 5 min walk,
in a little plaza they have a couple of liquor stores you can buy cheap wine, etc
Corona's were 3 for $5, bring a little fold up cooler from home and fill with ice everyday.
This plaza has a restaurant called Anthony's we ate breakfast there once very good.

When we arrived at the BeachTower,(you have to check in at the Coral Tower) I asked
for a water view room, no luck. We arrived at 3:30pm and was told my room would not
be ready for half hour, 45 minutes, I showed my travel documents saying my room was
to be ready by 3:00pm and magically a room was ready, was not to impressed with the
check in process a bit unorganized and staff were not that friendly at the registration
desk.

Walk to room from Coral towers was very nice, marble floors, fountains, shops,
very clean, We got to our room was what I expected, a bit small, 2 double beds, standard motel room.
Room was very clean, all rooms have balcony's which were nice to sit on and have a
drink while the girls were getting ready. We were on the 9th floor not bad view of Nassau.
Trust me you are not in your room for more than 2 hours a day.
You wake up, head down to the pools, and come back up,
take your showers, and head out for dinner and walk around the marina and complex.
get back around 10:00 by this point you are ready to collapse.
BeachTower was perfect for our family.

Pools, Beaches, Waterslides, Aquariums, and Atlantis grounds are just beautiful this
was well worth the trip, kids absolutely loved it.
Prices around the pool are expensive, but comparable to other resorts, beach
at Mandalay Bay , Disney Animal Kingdom, Kingston Plantation Myrtle Beach etc.
Tried to eat a small breakfast, granola bars etc. bought nachos, or a hot dog, chicken
nuggets, for kids around pool for lunch. hotdog and fries about $10.
Dinners.. marina pizza , johnny rockets, MarketPlace buffet, Carmines, Bimimi Road
all food was very good. Stayed in Dominican Republic a couple of years ago,
food in Bahamas was twice as good, nobody got sick, that is worth a few bucks.

Overall the whole family loved this trip, I could go on and on about the grounds
at Atlantis but you have to see to believe, especially if you children enjoy
aquariums.

“Great time, contrary to many other reviews”

Beach Tower at Atlantis

4 May 2008
6/6 found this review helpful

I just got back from a stay at the Atlantis Beach Tower. I did a lot of reading here and was totally terrified of going based on a lot of the reviews. So, I'll do my best to address some of the topics based on my experience.
People/Service - amazing. Truly a fabulous experience, everyone had a smile, greeted us everywhere we went, went out of their way to help us, started friendly conversations with us, etc. The service and the people were super friendly and that's even an understatement. I agree with someone else here who posted that said, it's all about the approach. If you smile, they smile. If you say please and thank you, so will they! Regarding the time share stuff, we got asked a couple times, but just said no, thank you and they understood. That was it.
Food/Costs - food was yummy, but definitely pricey. I thought $7 for a slice of pizza was crazy! And $10 for water! And I'm from NYC! We prepared ourselves for this so we didn't mind it too much, and came prepared with bottled water/cereal bars for snacks. We ate at Bimini Road once which was great. We sat outside and enjoyed the Marina Village, live music and sunset. Other times we ate by the pool or beach side at the many cafes - it had lovely scenery and we were so relaxed, we really didn't care about the prices at that point. For dinner we went to Dune at the One & Only resort - wow. What a beautiful place and what a price tag. I highly suggest going for drinks at their bar!
Room - I thought the room was great and really just perfect for what we needed. We didn't spend too much time in the room, but if I had to compare it to a hotel chain, I would say it looked like a Caribbean-style Sheraton or Marriott.
Checkin/Checkout - it was pretty smooth and quick. The hospitality areas are great for storing stuff and changing if the room isn't ready. We got to the hotel early and had no problems using all the facilities up until 3 pm. The airport and traffic can get a bit crazy so just factor that in when traveling on the islands.
Activities - holy pools! There are tons and tons of pools, lagoons, aquariums, ponds, water rides and beaches to fill up a long vacation. Cove beach was calmer and my favorite pool was by the beach tower. Loved the two lazy rivers!!! The marine life is just breathtaking - you'll see fish that you'll never again see in your lifetime. The grounds are kept nicely and we didn't feel it was too hard to get around. We didn't take a shuttle at all, just walked around by the beach path and through the indoor paths. And the Dig at night was a great experience. Casino was fun, not too big or overwhelming at all, and it had nice decor. Hope this helps! I would definitely visit again if I wanted a fun and sun-filled vacation.

“Not such a great value!”

Beach Tower at Atlantis

Foxboro, Massachusetts

We stayed at the Beach Towers Hotel at Atlantis from 4/25/08-4/29/08. The hotel room in short was very average. The room we had needed some updating (several different colors and themes going on, paint chipped, carpet buckled in spots). Overall the room was clean. One of the two dbl. beds had a coverlet with stains on it. The bathroom was nice and a good size. The t.v. in the room was small (20"). At this hotel, any room without a water view was looking directly at either a parking lot or roof, not at all pretty, so you avoid using the extremely small balcony off the room. If you do open the balcony door, be careful to close it immediately behind you. If you don't your room will be inundated with small "sandflee" type bugs crawing everywhere within minutes. Our snacks and small electronic devices were infested with these critters crawling all over them by the time we noticed them the next morning. On the second day of our stay, our floor (#7) and two other floors had a fire alarm sounding on them where the halls doors were automatically shut and flashing lights, alarms, etc.. Thinking there was a fire somewhere, our family (and many other guests) ran out to see what was going on. We then took the stairs to the lobby only to find out that the hotel concierge not only didn't know what was going on, but nonchalantly said to one of the guests, "We'll have somebody look into it". Meanwhile, about half a dozen families from three different floors were wondering if it was safe to go back to their rooms and business went on as usual at the concierge desk. The alarm continued for another twenty minutes. The guests were not advised about the situation and we all returned to our rooms wondering about the whole thing. Room service was great. Desserts were ordered and received within 15 minutes. Front desk service was horrible. Several calls we made to resolve an internet issue were not resolved in the timeframe given to us. Another con to the resort was the long walks to everything from the Beach Towers (no shuttle service). Walks to restaurants and aquaventure were10-15 minutes. The marine life and aquariums, however, were well-kept and the marine life appeared very healthy. We were surprised there was no charge to view these beautiful, well-cared for creatures.

All in all, we will probably never return to Atlantis. We chose this resort for our younger son (aquaventure water rides). This aquaventure, by the way, was one of the very few things you do not have to pay for. Everything at this resort was extremely overpriced. A bottle of water was close to $10. A cheeseburger was $10, nothing with it, a regular 20-oz bottle of pepsi was $4.50. Alcoholic drinks ranged from $12-$18 in a moderate sized plastic cup. At Dolphin Cay, if you did not want to pay the $125-$160 (really!!) a person to interact with the Dolphins, you would be charged $30 a person just to sit on the beach and watch other people interact with them. The arcade games were $2.50 minimum per game to play and dinner for a family of four costs anywhere from $220 (buffet style) to $450 or more at a resort restaurant. Whatever you do, DO NOT use Dan Knowles Tours to book transfers to/from the resort. We had a horrible experience the morning of our departure where there was not enough room on the bus (they overbooked) and we were told we would have to remain for the next bus. We almost missed our flight back home. We had to pay an additional $50 for a taxi just to get us to the airport in time.

Long story short, the island and its people are beautiful and friendly. We just felt we were being squeezed for every penny we had and it quite frankly took away from the vacation. We met a lovely older couple there who owned a very successful seasonal business in Canada. They mentioned to us that while they certainly could afford to eat out every night, they chose not to because the prices for the meals were outrageous and they could not justify the expense of doing so. We went online and read the reviews beforehand so we had an idea of what to expect, but we just had no idea it was this bad. You can get a much better value for your hard earned dollar by staying at another resort outside Atlantis. We were told by taxi cab drivers and local people that Atlantis caters to those who use their casinos who don't even have to pay for their rooms or meals (the highrollers). Comment cards were nowhere to be found on checkout and the resort has yet to follow up by email regarding our stay. Clearly they don't care about feedback. Live and learn. Be advised, if you have the money to spend - you should go. If you have some money to spend and are on some form of a budget, don't go. We were there for 3 days and 4 nights and spent close to $5,300 (and we only ate at a restaurant once for dinner, the other nights we had a quick pizza ($35 a pie) or a burger at Johnny Rockets (great alternative to the pricey restaurants by the way). Please do your homework before going.
