I was at Sandals Jan 28-31, with my boyfriend who gave me the holiday as a Christmas present. We are in a longdistance relationship so perhaps our priorities were different than other couples. He researched the options relentlessly, reading every bad review here for pointers.
I think the fact that there are different levels of rooms is key to the experience at Sandals. We booked a room in the villas, which is not what they consider their a-list rooms, but they were the rooms we wanted for the privacy and quiet. They tried to upsell us to one of the main buildings when we arrived, but we knew we wanted a villa. When we got to our villa room, we fell instantly in love with it, despite its less extensive bathroom. Apparently being far from the action is considered a downside - we enjoyed the strolls to and from the main resort areas. Though the rooms in the villas are not part of some of the upgraded rooms, again - we had a well researched vacation, and we had purchased the butler upgrade. So we had an in room bar with anything we wanted, and 24 hour room service (though the late night menu is limited). We also had reservations at every restaurant we wanted, though we arranged all of that when we first arrived.
So, look - we weren't looking for extreme vacation - we were looking for comfortable surroundings and a romantic setting. Every morning, when we chose to wake up, we ordered room service breakfast and ate it on our private patio, watching a certain bird build his nest. We lounged about all day, doing some beach time and some pool time (at the quiet villa pool and hot tub) and some mellow lunches. We spent the latter time of our afternoons on our porch, listening to jazz on the portable cd player we brought, playing cards and enjoying a lovely wine that, when we realized we loved it on the first day, the butler was happy to provide on the rest of our days. Then there was nap, and whatever time, and then we dressed for dinner (I like dressing for dinner) and then we sampled many of the lovely restaurants. I live in New York and I have dined at many fine restaurants. The restaurants at the resort are not Babboo, but then again, they don't have the attitude of the snooty restaurants either. We had a delicious meal every night, in an unrushed, gracious atmosphere. We did not go to Kimono's because ....it sounded like a cheesy atmosphere we wouldn't enjoy.
I kept reading about weak drinks in plastic cups when I was reading reviews here. I had one drink in a plastic cup the whole time I was there - my only drink at the beach bar....I daresay that a broken glass on the beach or worse yet, in the pool, would be pretty problematic - the only way to fix a broken glass in the pool would be to drain it - so I understand that. And if I were drinking before 5pm, I'd be looking for a not exactly potent drink. So...those complaints have always been weird to me.
I'm not the best person to ask about nightlife. We went to the piano bar two nights and we had a great time - if you like to sing, even if you are a bad singer, I highly recommend it - their piano player is awesome. Other nights we just walked on the beach and called it a night.
If you are looking for wild times, or Paris without the bad weather, this place is probably not for you. We had an amazing time....very romantic, but I can see how it wouldn't be everyone's cup of tea. To each his own, I guess.
