Well, along with everyone else, we also read all the reviews before we left for our vacation. I am the type of person that has to experience things on my own and I don't always listen to what others have to say until I see it myself. Yes, some of the negative reviews were correct. First off, the rooms are all pretty old and neat lots of TLC. Our toilet did not work. It overflowed and it flowed out of the bathroom, into the main room under the beds...it was a mess. THANK GOD we were in the room when it happened because our suit cases were on the floor. We would have had a huge mess. It took some time for the front dest to locate someone to help us take care of the water.
The doors slam very hard and you will hear them through out the night. If you are not a sound sleeper you will be woke up.
We were also promised an ocean view room with a balcony. When we reserved. When we arrived we were told that it was first come first serve on the rooms and there were no balcony rooms left. I was quite disappointed and made this clearly known. They told me I could check back the next day to see if there were any available. By this time my husband was furious and did not want to move all our stuff again the next day. We did not spend much time in our room anyway, but it would have been nice to be able to sit out on the balcony at night and in the morning.
The alcohol was horrible. They only have the island beer on draft and no other kinds of beer. You can ask for top shelf liquor and the bar tender will get it for you. The lines for the bar are extremely long. Make sure you bring a large glass and they will fill that one for you. If you use their glasses they are very small.
The buffet style restaurant was ok. There was a lot of food but sometimes it was cold. The omlettes in the morning were great but you need to get there early because the lines are long waiting for them to be made. The Italian restaurant was great! I highly recommend it. Make sure you make reservations for this restaurant a few days in advance. Make these restaurant reservations as soon as you check in.
The beach was beautiful. Not many shells, so if you are an advid shell picker you won't get many here. The ocean was really warm and nice to swim in.
Over all, it was an ok place to stay. The pool was really refreshing and the sun was hot.

“Trip last week.......”

Viva Wyndham Fortuna Beach

Ok...I don't leave reviews as a norm....however there have been SO many DIFFERENT reviews about staying here, I'll put in my 2 cents :-)

The room (we were in C) can use an upgrade, however...they weren't dirty, just minor things could help and I know they are working on the resort and understand completely...they'll go from beach front back, which makes perfect sense. I also don't spend my vacations in my room......it's for sleeping, showering etc.

The reef off the beach was AMAZING.....however, I would love to see (as others we were with stated as well) something when people check in as to education about the coral reefs...they are ALIVE and it was disturbing to see people walking on them....VERY disturbing. So I have shot an email off to the resort management about some type of education for people who don't know much about reefs. Either a quick speech or give every person who checks in a letter regarding the reefs...we need to protect our oceans, and the reefs that sustain the life we like to see out there!

The snorkeling was AMAZING...we saw tons of fish, as well as a large barracuda and a ray the last day we snorkeled! The color of the water....amazing....I've never seen true "emerald green" water until we were there!

The staff I didn't find unkind....we were asked over and over again if we were enjoying ourselves. I did find the female staff to be less "accommodating" than the male staff....but I didn't deal much with the staff, really just the bar tenders...LOL

Ahhh..the time share people...if they try to grab you, just tell them you already have one...they will leave you alone and they don't "prey on you" we were asked twice, we told them we had one...end of situation!

There was some work going on which one person who left a review complained about...my theory on this....they were fixing the deck on the beach front bar the day we got there....no big deal, and they built a little cabana thing next to the pool while we were there...but it was NICE TO SEE THEM WORKING ON IT....and they ARE fixing it up. I did not hear nail guns all week, or skill saws...only a couple times, and regardless my thought is they are fixing it up, they were hit hard with the hurricane a couple years ago and it takes time to get things back up and running.

The beach had SOME garbage on it....but that was more the mustard packets etc, and not many, I honestly didn't see a lot of garbage on the beach...and I was there at the same time someone posted it was loaded with garbage, which really was NOT the case...someone was always walking around picking up glasses etc, and honestly...it's laziness of the people staying there than anything...PICK UP AFTER YOURSELF and there won't be a problem! That is my theory. They did rake the beach one day we were there....that was about it, however I was told that they are gearing up for the busy season and staffing wasn't complete while we were there.

We had a day with no bath mat....and had to ask for wash cloths, however I asked, and they were there in less than an hour.

Someone also posted NO BOTTLED WATER, again...NOT THE CASE. We, however, are wyndham by request members...they delivered more than enough water and soda to our room while we were there...than we needed. They also brought us a bottle of champagne, glasses, and a fruit/cheese/cracker platter while we were there. I recommend becoming a by request member if staying at any of their properties. Also..the drug store sells water (bottled) and believe it or not...it's cheaper than buying bottled water in the states!

The bars, there are two...one in the rec room and one on the beach. The bartenders were fun and friendly. David and Kevin were the BEST....ask David for his "specialty" I won't ruin the fun here....just ask him....you can also request top shelf liquor if you want it....

The pool table needs some attention...LOL...we ran into a few issues with it, and there is no chalk....but I found that the sand works great instead of chalk :-)

The food was not bad, it kept you full....we ate out a few times....and speaking of that...if facing the ocean, take a stroll to the right down the beach and eat at Georgies...VERY GOOD food! We enjoyed our dinner there...it was well worth the little 10 min walk! The asian and italian restaurants were good as well.

We went into Lucaya a couple of times....hit Rum Runners while there.....great place to eat and drink (we did both there) and the greek restaurant (I don't remember the name.....) was wonderful!

People vacation is what you make it....the wedding party we were with had a few issues, however the resort made well on the issues for them.

When I vacation I do not want to be hounded, I don't want to be waited on hand and foot and I want to relax....I relaxed, had a good time with wonderful friends. I would like to see how they are in a year, after they are done with the renovations.

It's not a terrible place......some people just have a different idea of what they want and honestly we spent twice what we did there in Key West 2 years ago, and had a fine vacation.......

We never made it to the shows, so I can't comment on them....we were too busy doing other stuff!

That is it for now......was it perfect, no....however what makes it perfect? Being waited on hand and foot or enjoying yourself? We aren't high maintenance, and we had fun......things happen and I've had issues in other places I've stayed.....

Well I am writing this in hopes that I might save someone a lot of agravation and anger. This location was chosen by my friend who was getting married at the Viva Wyndham and it also happened to be my honeymoon so I entered in to this thinking it was going to be really special. Well at check in we found out that our room was a smoking room w/ king bed, not what I had booked. We had booked a non-smoking, king, ocean view. We then had to wait almost 2 hours before getting a non-smoking room with 2 queen beds, as this was the only thing available so we were told. When entering the room, (supposedly recently remodeled), we encountered what looked like a large blood stain on the bathroom door and trim, the furniture was in need of repair, the sliding door did not close correctly and the first bed we used dipped in a good 4" on my side. So the next day we switched to the other bed which wasn't much better. There were other issues with the room but they are not worth mentioning, it is clear that the level of attention to detail is not the same as in the states. Well, after 3 days of the sliding door waking me as it rattled in the wind, I called the night manager who told me he would leave a note for someone in the AM and he was sorry. Well no one in the AM ever called so I had to spend an hour or so chasing down someone who could have our room changed. Once this was done things greatly improved! We had our king room, non-smoking, ocean view that was in reasonable condition. The hotel started treating us like we were on our honeymoon and stocked our fridge, bottle of champagne, fruit, and several other nice things.
Overall, it is a very pretty property, the bimini buildings have been renovated, (although not the best attention to detail), it is a fun relaxing place and done right could deliver a great vacation value if your not expecting to much. The food was good at the buffet and the resturants were very good. The best thing was the dive shop, great people, great diving, my special thanks to Sawyer, Sean, and Patty who knew of our honeymoon needed saving and made it very special. Once we had brought our problems to the right person, (Manager P G), most of our issues were resolved, addressed, or compensated, thank you P G for all your help, my new wife now has some nice memories of our honeymoon.
I must say there were others in our party,(about 25-30), that had no problems and then there were some that had more problems than us. It is clear to me that the island pace is much slower than here in the states, so if you can let some things go and understand that your "not in Kansas any more", your trip could be a good one. MOST IMPORTANT....IF THINGS AREN'T RIGHT GO STRAGHT TO THE TOP RIGHT AWAY, AND GET EVERYTHING RESOLVED A.S.A.P.

We were concerned with this trip because of the reviews, so we contacted Mr Burrows at the resort and upgraded to beachfront in the Bimini building. It was excellent. The food is buffet style, not perfect, but it more than fills you up. The specialty restaurants were very good. The dive shop is great. The staff is friendly, gracious and will go out of their way to help you. The beach is great with a very nice reef out front. There have been some reports of building going on. And, yes, there is remodeling going on but you have to search it out because they don't want to disrupt the resort. We only had one problem and it was out of the resort's control. This was with the tour operator and an excursion. So go to this resort, get ocean front and your room will be good. We did alot of homework in regards to this trip and it paid off. We are very glad we went and will for sure return

“Not a bad place to relax!”

Viva Wyndham Fortuna Beach

This was my first visit to the Islands and I took along my best friend as we were in desperate need of some overdue down time. The check in process was easy and we were greeted warmly and there were no issues. We ended up in the C building which is quite the walk from the front desk. The room was not bad, a bit out dated, but I hear they are renovating soon.

We got bored there after our first day, but the constant flow of drinks certainly helped. We were not impressed with the food in the main dinning hall and I am not a picky eater - it was challenging at best. We ate alot of salad and if you dont arrive early you will find the selection is not ample. We did eat at the Italian restaurant once and it was fine. Never made it to the Asian place, but I hear it was good.

We did enjoy the staff, they were all warm and friendly - I suggest making friends with your bar tender!!! There were alot of families and it was noisy at times around the pool and not alot of shade. The beach was nice and there are alot of lounge chairs provided, get one early if you plan on hanging out at the beach all day.

We spent our evenings in Port Lucaya which was alot of fun. Alot of activity and people mulling around. Ample shopping and several bars to chose from. Rum Runners is the best price wise and we had the most fun there. Bahama Mammas is fun too for after hours as they stay open very late!

Overall we had a blast! We met some great local people and I would consider staying at this resort again. If you want rest and relaxation, you dont need to leave the place... if you want to party - get out and head to town as that is a great adventure.
