“Good bang for buck”

Port Lucaya Resort & Yacht Club

30 Apr 2008

Bahamas is a very expensive place and we were lucky to find a hotel that is centrally located and was reasonably priced. I am not going to say that this place is the Sheridan or anything, but for the price and the location (and really how much time are you going to spend in your room) you can't go wrong. The rooms are clean and cool and some overlook the harbour, which is great. There is a pool and a hot tub as well. I have no complaints about the cleanliness of the room, and the guys helping with the luggage are great and would hold your bags if your room wasn't ready so you can explore. The hotel is right beside a marketplace area, the straw market sells the usual stuff (t-shirts, pipes and the like) but there are also some great one of a kind shops like Ocean which makes beautiful soaps and lotions that make a great gift. There are some good restaurants, just make sure that you have about an hour or more to eat because in the Bahamas if you are in a hurry you are the only one. We spent two nights at the Port Lucaya and the rest of the time of a liveaboard on the water, and it was a nice place to lay our heads. In the evenings in the square there are cheap drinks at rum runners (2 corona for 5 bucks). The police station is right across the street and are always helpful if you need to take a bus into town. I was weary at first to take the bus but it is the best. It is not like North American buses, these buses wait at stops and then go when they have some passengers. Don't bother going to the International Marketplace, it is mostly empty because of the destruction of some of the hotels by one of the hurricanes. The area is pretty dismal, I would suggest spending time around the Porty Lucaya area. But definitely, if you have some time, go down to the City Market (grocery store) and get some snacks. It is only a buck to ride the bus and worth the trip, you can get some great pringles and other snack foods. If you want beach just walk across the street through the Sheridan and voila!! We did a lot of off the beaten track stuff so please email if you want more info.

“Best possible location!”

Port Lucaya Resort & Yacht Club

23 Apr 2008

I stayed with my boyfriend and my parents at the Port Lucaya Resort & Yacht Club for 4 days and it was a blast.

The location is terrific. We had 2 room downstairs with a pool view (olympic pool by the way!!). The upstairs rooms have a marina view.

It is so beautiful and lively to wake up every morning and open the door or the marina and seeing the boats going in and out during the day.
The market is colorful and lively and the people are really sweet and helpfull.

There are plenty (I mean plenty!) of restaurants of all style right on the marina (you don't even need to walk). Some are amoung the best I ever had (Luciano's...). There again, the people are really nice and do their best to have you have the best stay as possible.
The marina has a concert every night with local or american music. There are bars along the marina for a drink until late at night.

Any activity can start from the Port Lucaya resorts: boat tours, scuba diving trips, car rentals, scooters rentals, local bus. The bech across the street in the Sheridan hotel is huge and if you walk toward East you will find yourself alone on a delicious white sand beach.... Paradise :-)

I would recommend this hotel very much. The rooms are confortable yet not too expensive. There is a fridge and a microwave in the room.
Just bring your shampoo because it is not provided.

Enjoy Grand Bahama!!!

The Port Lucaya Resort & Yacht Club was awesome; we had a fantastic time. Me and my three friends traveled to the Bahamas through the Discovery cruise line; and it was worth every penny .The hotel staff was great, rooms where clean, location of the hotel................ SUPERB. When reading these reviews you must remember; that everyone had a different expectation and experience. Thus what one person likes another may dislike. So go and have a great time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

“At least it was quiet”

Port Lucaya Resort & Yacht Club

18 Feb 2008

The location of the Port Lucaya Resort is very nice, right on the marina. The Marketplace is steps from the front entrance; a casino is across the street; the beach is across the street, a 5-minute stroll at most. There are several restaurants, very good ones with great service, at the Marketplace (Zorba's Greek Restaurant was excellent!) But the hotel itself leaves something to be desired.

We arrived on the Discovery Cruise at 1:00 p.m. and took the transfer shuttle to the hotel, arriving around 1:30. Check-in time is not until 3:00, and they told us no rooms would be available until then. The bellman (a very sweet, friendly man) stored our luggage for us so we didn't have to carry it around while we waited. Most people took to explore the Marketplace, but we stayed in the lobby, which was comfortable.

When we did check in at 3:00, they took us to our room. The hotel is made up of six or seven two-story buildings surrounding the large pool area. We were in the building farthest from the main office, and were escorted there in a golf cart so we didn't have to haul our bags. The room was not bad, but nothing special - a king-size bed, small table with two chairs, dresser, small TV, and surprisingly, a small refrigerator and microwave. There was one towel in the bathroom (and two of us) so my husband called to ask for another one. We got no answer from housekeeping or the front desk, so when we left the room later that day, we went by the desk to ask about towels. They assured us we'd have some when we returned from dinner, but guess what - we still didn't have them. My husband went back to the desk and finally got some towels. Not necessarily a problem, but a little irritating.

Although the Marketplace was next door, and had live music on Saturday night, our room was quiet and restful. The beds are a little old and lumpy, but we were so tired that we didn't really care. When we went to shower, though, we realized there was no shampoo, and were told that there was a sundries shop in the Marketplace if we needed it. We just washed our hair with the hand soap. When I went to dry my hair, the built-in dryer didn't work, so I looked a fright most of the day.

Checkout time is 11:00 a.m., but the shuttle was not scheduled to pick us up until 2:30. We checked our bags at the desk again - with the same nice fella - and headed back to the Marketplace for a very late breakfast. The locals are very friendly and not pushy about selling their wares like most stops in the Caribbean. English is the primary language, so that was nice, too.

Overall, the hotel was okay, but nothing special. Not bad for the money, I guess, but next time I'd pay a little more somewhere else for the extras. The staff was extremely friendly, though, as were all the people we met on the island.

Port Lucaya Resort & Yacht Club

18 Jan 2008

We stayed at the Port Lucaya for the Christmas holiday. This hotel is in prime location. When you step out the door you are right at the straw market and resturants. The beach is a little walk but the island is beautiful. The hotel needs some work, compared to the Sheraton and the Westin across the street this hotel needs some major upgrades. The good part is the hotel was clean and the view was beautiful. I believe that once the hotel make some major changes with upgrading the rooms and the ground area I would stay there again. Another good note is the staff at this hotel was friendly and accommodating.
