So my gf and I purchased a 7 night vacation at the Grand Lucayan. We left with mixed feelings because of the way service staff conducted themselves but I’d like to give you my impression of the grounds first. The location at the Grand Lucayan is great (right next to the marketplace) and the cleaning staff was excellent in cleaning/prepping the room and keeping grounds clean. The pool and beach front were also excellent. If you want to snorkel, take the tour since you don’t see very much or not nearly as much in the waters in front of the hotel. That being said, I just wanted to give you a warning about my negative experience and then give a review of the places/activities/restaurants nearby we recommend!
The Bad: I was displeased with the Grand Lucayan because of their service and response to our problem. On 2 nights, (3rd night -not as bad) there was an incessant hum/vibration sound that was coming from what sounded like above and below us. Here is a video I took after being talked down to by the desk not believing me of the sounds that were occurring and resulting in waking a service guy (felt bad about that) to come and say “Hmmm…what could be causing that…hmmm” and saying that they could check it out in the morning…slept maybe 2 hrs max due to exhaustion…
Just a quick warning…they didn’t let us move rooms until the night before our flight at 2:30 AM! during which it occurred again. Radisson Grand Lucayan: “Satisfaction Guaranteed” – they did nothing except write an email back about the ‘inconvenience’. So that’s your satisfaction folks – an email trying to console you. I personally will not stay at a Radisson again…that’s for sure.

Now the Good!
So we did plenty of things that people mentioned in other posts. Some things were pricier than others so I will make it a point to mention the more $$$ experiences.
The MarketPlace – right across the street is a great place to get gifts for family members, food, beer/booze, and entertainment.
Gifts- look around before purchasing since some of the goods are sold at more than one stand. Just to give you a price gauge of what you can spend by bargaining a bit: I bought 3 small straw purses (for sisters) for 8$/ea from 10/ea since I bought 3. I also bought a wood carved shark for 16$, some braided bracelets for 3$/ea. And I picked up a fish “piggy” bank made from a coconut for $9.
Food- Bahamians love saying “jiggy” when talking about conch. =) We visited to places where the conch was absolutely fantastic. The first place that I HIGHLY recommend is a small shack towards the back of the marketplace near the activities booth(I think the conch man?). It sells “conch salad” which is just amazing. It is like a conch ceviche and it is so delicious and fresh! They sell the shells too! The conch fritters are decent there but are really fluffy and only have smaller bits of conch. The other place to eat conch is at Café Breeze. Get the cracked conch. Holy cow… This conch that is fileted and fried is amazing with some lemon and their sauce. We went back here twice. Le Med Mediterannean was pricey – at least 20-30 a plate but the GROUPER was superb! Zorbas was ok (both in taste and in price), China Café (lot of food) was decent but lasted two meals, and subway is there…easy way to take a long trip to the beach without having to go anywhere for food.
Our best meal was at Pelican Bay’s new restaurant: Flying Fish. Be warned, you will spend 50$+ easily to get a belly full but that money is well worth it. Structured around a 4 course meal (each around 10-20) or all four for 75ish, you get small sized plates. We had a couple dishes that were fantastic – the scallops and beef dish were amazing. Forego the curry dish.
Beer/booze – in the market, two locations sell them. Great way to get local/imports for cheaper than at beachside bars.
Activities: Taino Beach is a secluded getaway with Tony Macaroni’s right there to serve delicious conch. Pat & Diane’s snorkeling tour – a must. Thousands of colorful fish and beautiful reef. Kayaking – for those enjoying a day out on the ocean. Jet-skiing for those more thrill inclined!
Hope that helps!
