“Nice hotel in the city; great deal!”

We stayed for four days in the Royal Palm Resort & Suites, in the Grand Bahama island. The name is a bit of an overstatement; I wouldn't quite call it a resort; yet it's a very nice place with most of the in-room amenities that one needs, and with very good prices. This makes it overall a GREAT deal, especially if you're looking for a place just to sleep, and are planning to spend most of your day exploring the island.

The hotel is situated in Freeport, the "city" (don't expect a big city; it's more like a ... village) in the center of Grand Bahama. It is very close to the airport, easily accessible from a central street that crosses the city. It offers free parking and it's very convenient if you rent a car; there's also a gas station right across the hotel. If you don't have a car, keep in mind that it's far from the beaches and from Lucaya.

During our stay we barely had to interact with the hotel staff; we had already paid through travelocity, and there were no surprises or anything else major to go wrong, so we didn't really have to interact with the staff. Checking in took only a minute, and we were accommodated even though we had arrived around 2pm, two hours before check-in time (which is 4pm).

Our room was on the second floor and was clean and tidy. The room had two double beds, air conditioning (very important!), a TV, a small kitchen with a sink and a microwave (and a table with two chairs), a bathroom with a tub and a hair dryer, an iron board with iron, and hangers for clothes. It was very comfortable with no major issues, other than a burnt light bulb, and a smoke detector that was constantly beeping (we had to take its battery off).

The complex has a pool and a bar. We didn't use the pool, and we only had a coke in the bar (which sells for $1). Also, we did not make any phone calls.

A few minor annoyances:
* The bathroom has only two large towels and two tiny washcloths; each person gets only one large towel and one washcloth!
* The bathroom doesn't have any shampoo or lotion; only some (harsh for your skin) soap bar that gets replenished daily. Bring your own shampoo, facial soap, and body lotion.
* On Saturday, the bar turned into a regular night club, complete with loud music and everything. We left the AC on all night, because the noise from the AC was blocking the loud noise from the night club.

Nevertheless, this is a great little place, very comfortable and with all the amenities one might need, and I definitely recommend it to fellow travelers, especially since we paid only $66/night for a double room. Why spend triple the money and go to a bigger hotel, if you are planning to explore around the island and go to secluded beaches anyway?

I wanted to give Royal Palm a better rating, because the staff was very friendly, and the rooms were clean, but there were some pungent downsides, and I'm just finding out that I got royally screwed making
international phone calls from the place. I should have known better and brought a calling card, but how would I know that each call (all but one was less than 5 mins) would cost me over $40! 6 calls cost me
$250!!!! The prices were not posted nor offered to me when making the
calls. The pungent comment comes from a couple of evenings during our stay when there was a really strong sewer smell in the neighborhood. Not the motel's fault, but one could not enjoy oneself outside at the pool inhaling the smell. Fortunately, the rooms were well sealed, and the smell didn't permeate into them.

Another note: the photos on this site are of the Island Palm, which is another hotel/motel under the same ownership. We drove by the Island Palm a number of times, and I recognize the 3 floors of balconies in the pictures. The Royal Palm just had 2 floors.

Again, the staff was friendly and the rooms clean, but I wouldn't go here again.

After reading everyone else's reviews I was literally scared to step foot in this hotel! - I don't know where you all stayed but this place must be under new management! The room was being made up when we arrived (we we're 4 hours ahead of schedule); but they were happy to accomodate us and got the maid to finish up while we were in the restaurant (they have a restaurant on the grounds that serves breakfast and lunch but closes at 3pm I believe so the only meal you need to worry about getting out is dinner and that's no problem - we ordered Papa Johns Pizza right to our room!)

Everything was clean and everyone so nice! I was so worried about the time share that when the woman at the information desk asked for a moment of our time I almost blew her off - turns out she just wanted to give us a packet of info on time the shuttle runs (they have a complimentary shuttle that takes you to and from Xanadu beach daily), things to do (they arrange excursions for you everything from glass bottom boat rides to swimming to dolphins and it's cheap like $40 bucks!)

We went to two beaches while we were there (we went for a weekend) first we went to Port Lucaya on the advice of the information desk lady - and it was AWESOME! We got to swim (the water is SO clear and beautiful!) and we got to shop around at the tourist stops. The next day we took the free shuttle to Xanadu and that was even more amazing becaue it's not a populated as Port Lucaya so we had a little romantic time to ourselves (highly recommended for lovers!) There is a bar on the beach at Xanadu but I don't recommend it as the bar tender was a complete --- and when I asked for a drink in a coconut or something with an umbrella he snorted, "This isn't Hawaii!" - Yeah so don't patronize him!

Other than that it was an awesome trip and I DEFINIATELY recommend the Royal Palm Suites! We have photos but we left our camera there but we called them to let them know and they're mailing it to us so if you want to see our photos at a later date email me at SatireFireFly@yahoo.com

Departing the Airport in a TAXI , the driver had to ask a couple of co workers where RPSuites was located. Oh well he found it. First impression: Not bad looking. Surrounding locale was QUESTIONABLE.Hey folks I am aquainted with the back streets of B'more. Not a problem most natives /good attitude !. Rooms large, clean, nicely kept.Papertowels in kitch'd be nice.Little bar sink. Stayed on first floor by the clean ungaurded pool.Regular 530am alarm clock from the RED Snapper(rest.) employee filling his ice buckets for day ...right beside the pool.Bus Stop is close 7 minute (safe) walk. You keep the cab drivers honest. Question rates! Ask if he/she included the tip! Port Lucaya is where the "action" is.Did not try the restaurant in RPSuites. Went to Ruby Swiss restaurant.5 min. from hotel.NICE,however$$. I believe the Poyal Palm Suites is hoked up big time with Time Share/ and RCI. The person in the lobby opposite the registars desk was congenial and helpful until she realized we were not interested in a time share.Best bet for us when there ,was free shuttle to beach(XANADU) and back to hotel. Overall: Do yourself a favor stay in Port Lucaya for the extra couple of Bahamian dollares. Bon Voyage.

“A Great Deal”

Royal Palm Resort & Suites

We stayed there in Jan. 06, and were very worried after reading past reviews. When we were there, the whole place looked like it was just remodeled. The room was great, and included a mini frdige and a microwave. The pool was small but clean, and there weren't any bed bugs while we were there. They give you beach towels, but make sure you don't lose them. The on site restaurant is very convenient for breakfast and inexpensive by island standards.

The shuttle to Xanadu beach runs infrequently, and the beach itself is deserted (though once they fix the hotels on it I'm sure it will be busier). To save money on taxis, take the public buses. The are lots of stops (the Post Office is the closest stop to the hotel, about a 5 minute walk), and it costs $1 per person. I think they stop running at 7 or 8.

Port Lucaya was where most of the tourist stuff is, and is about 15 minutes away. The food is very expensive (15-?), but drinks were farily standard (6-10).

Overall, the hotel is isolated, but if money is a concern, you can stay there and take the buses where ever you want to go and still have a great trip.
