My wife and I just returned from our first trip to the Bahamas. Using our Starwood points we decided to stay at the Westin Lucaya in Freeport, GBI. The hospitality upon our arrival was superb. The front desk checked us in and within 15 minutes we were unpacking in our room. Upon obtaining our room key we received a map of the Westin grounds. Unfortunately the Front Desk clerk did not tell us which way to go once we received our key. He instructed us to go outside and follow the walkway. However, there are three or four buildings with rooms so therefore we walked around aimlessly for a few minutes longer than expected. The weather was nice outside so we didn't mind being stuck outside longer than normal, considering we just dodged the snowstorm in the morning which closed O'hare's Airport.
Our room was on the third floor of the Lighthouse Point and overlooked the ocean. The view from our room was just spectacular!!! We had a two room suite with a master bed and between the view and the room you couldn't beat it. I was a little disappointed that the televisions at the hotel are the old style and are not HDTV or widescreen. The room itself was clean and orderly. We were pleased to see a small refridgerator and a microwave. However, I noticed that there was only one spoon for both of us to share but several knifes and forks. Anyhow, we made due with what we had.
The Westin's workout facilitiy was great!!! It had windows overlooking the property and you could see the ocean from there. In addition, the facility was just located down the hallway from our room. However, if you are stay at Breaker's Cay I would dread the walk there as it would probably take you 10 minutes. My wife and I didn't use the spa on the lower levels but were quite please with the overall appearance and equipment. The best thing was this facility was free to all its guests.
The grounds at the Westin were well kept. The lounge chairs had soft cushions on all of them, except for the ones by the ocean. There was never a time when we couldn't find a place to sit and relax. We walked the beaches several times from each channel and the beach was clean and raked. I am amazed at how soft the sand is there on this beach. My only complaint about the Westin grounds was that the pools are not heated. The pool between the Lanai Suites and the Lighthouse Point was just freezing!!! The ocean water was much warmer than the pool water. We were told that because the pool is above ground it cannot keep heat. My thoughts were that it can't keep heat because the water is so cold. I couldn't even swim in the pool for more than 3 minutes before i had to hop out.
We rented a jeep from a local business for a day. The companies rent their vehicles in blocks of 24 hours. We picked up or jeep on tuesday afternoon and took a drive out to the Lucayan National Park. This is a place to visit. Very cool caves along with an awesome beach. I recommend going at low tide as if you go during high tide the beach won't be that spectacular. We also drove to High Rock/Point and had a rummer runner at Bishops. I was surprised that the price for this drink at Bishops was a buck more than what the Marketplace vendors charge. We were the only individuals there and perhaps that is the reason why.
On the second day we had our jeep we ended up driving out to the West End and seeing Gins Ser Mur, or what is there right now. Its quite a sight to see what they plan on doing on there property. On the way back we decided to stop at Paradise Cove and do some snorkeling. The air temperature was in the low 70's and it was sunny out. The only downfalls were that the wind was blowing and the water was cool, however, warmer than the Westin pools. We ended up staying out on the beach and snorkeling there for about 4 hours. Could have stayed longer but we needed to get the jeep back by 3pm. Some individuals got biten by bugs the day before; however, we came out unscathed. If you have a group of people (4 or more), i highly recommend renting a car for the day and going out there on your own. The cost to rent and split the car between the four of you ($65) is much less than paying the $35 for each of you and getting stuck on a bus to take you there....just a personal preference.
My wife and I would consider going back to Freeport in the future; however, I think I would rather check out some more tropical area to visit. Our temperatures during our stay were in the 60's and 70's. It rained for the first three of four days we were there and we were stuck in our room. In addition, it was also very windy everyday there, except for the last day, which was almost 78 and sunny. On that day we could have used the wind.
If you decide to go make sure you check out the Marketplace. Buy your breakfasts there or even take a publc bus to the City Market grocery store. You can buy everything from food to alcohol there and store it in your room. The hotel doesn't mind that you bring back food unlike some others that will not allow you.
Overall the Westin Lucaya was a nice place to stay. It was above average but wasn't excellent. Enjoy your trip.
